'10 JUCO QB Cameron Newton

ahh i see. well thats a shame. It seems to be the common opinion of the board that cam is better... but i guess ill trust our staff.

I really think the sticking point with Cam is his desire to know he is going to be "the guy" before he commits to a school. If there was more to see and longer to evaluate him -- at this point, as a junior coming in -- he may get the nod, but without seeing him against the kind of competition he will face in the SEC, I don't think the coaches are going to be willing to give him the guarantees he wants.

Actually Cam had better numbers for three quarters of play. The suspension thing does leave a sour taste in the mouth.

He threw 1 less pass than Simms and completed 5 less passes. He did throw 1 more TD and didn't throw an INT though. I'd give the edge to Cam...

The thing is, it sounds like it didn't matter what Newton did. It all depended on what Simms did. Simms had to lose the offer. He didn't do anything to lose it...

seems kinda cowardish on his part. he should come in and earn the spot if he thinks he is good enough.

I noticed that Oklahoma offered Cam out of HS. He's got the talent. The arm. The height. Sab, LV explanations? He just must not be as impressive as I think he is. Im just so depressed that Simms is about to be our next QB:banghead2:

1) He wants to be guaranteed the starting job. Not gonna happen. 2) I don't think they feel he can run a pro-style offense and manage the game as well as Simms will be able to...

It's not unheard of among the top JuCo QBs. He has two years and he wants a shot at the league. He can't get that sitting on a bench. He'd prefer to go to a smaller school where he is guaranteed to play and I can't really blame him.

I think what Sab is saying makes sense. You cannot guarantee a guy he is the one. He has to earn it. Cam can be the guy at Miss. St but he will get drafted higher if he comes here and succeeds. At Tenn he is a first round pick if he works out at Miss. St. he will not have the tools around him and be facing SEC defenses. I just can't see him doing more then having a few good games.

Don't really agree with a lot of that poster has said previously (obviously Cam would never come here to be stuck as a "redzone specialist" or "Wildcat man") - but he's right on the redzone threat. It can be quite a bit easier to stuff a simple HB dive even from someone like Hardesty down at the goal-line.

You're crazy if you don't think we couldn't have gone 4 or 5 wide near the end there against UCLA (or whomever) and spread them out and just run a QB draw/run or pass option rollout or something once or twice and not gotten in. Dude's a freak - even if he doesn't out run the first guy - you still gotta bring him down and hope he doesn't fall forward for another couple of yards.

Good point

Posted these in other related threads, but just for good measure, here ya go....just found 'em. FWIW, I don't know how ANY major conference team can promise him the starting job. Mallet transferred to ARK because he felt his chance at starting was as good as any, but I highly doubt Nutt or Petrino promised him the job.

I think Newton is leaning more heavily on the prospect of immediate playing time, and you can't blame him for that. But his chances here are as good as it gets...and even then, there is no way the staff can guarantee the starting job. It wouldn't happen that way at Miss St either. They are already splitting time with 2 QB's and one is as much an athlete as Newton. He'd have to work to earn it.

Having said that and after watching his team's highlight reels, damn...we NEED this guy! I'm so glad he isn't on the Gator's roster any longer. This kid could make Tebow look like a scrub, IMHO.

The guy got held out for discipline in Juco. That is not step one that means he had been doing stuff leading up to that discipline action. He had similar problems at UF. So I think he is a lost cause. He is clearly better then Simms as a pro-style as a football player. Others saying different are very confused about the game of football. But no one man is can break all the rules. He might be a team killer. Meyer might of had this one right. IDK I wish he was not such a loser but it seems he is.

Just curious...Where did you get this from? I hope it amounts to nothing. With Cam and all the targets we're bringing in this class, combined with the stable of RB's we have, this team could be easily contending for the SECC next year. He changes the whole season outlook, IMO. I'm excited about Bray and all, but I'm even more convinced now, that Cam instantly improves this offense next fall. There's no doubt that he's an improvement over what we have (even though I think we may be surprised with NL...Newton would keep him on the bench...with Simms though, I expect to NL to have an edge as he will already know the system)

I've gotten word that the coaches aren't confident at all in Bray's ability to start next year. Thus why they are pursuing a JuCo guy so doggedly.

As to the disciplinary situation, it's mentioned earlier in this thread. Read.

Wow...that cant be serious.

Wow...that cant be serious.
I base that on the fact that he looks like a much better athlete...taller, faster and more fluid...plus better throwing mechanics than Tebow.
That's why most NFL analyst's don't see a QB future for Tebow in the NFL. One reason why he was supposed to be working on his mechanics in the offseason...didn't seem to change a lick.

Do you use on-field performance as a variable in your Tebow-Newton analysis?

I wanted Newton, b/c I thought he had a ton more upside, but i don't like the fact he was suspended for the 1st quarter b/c of discipline issues. That tells me he still has issues.

BTW, anybody know exactly why he was suspended?

The coach did not put him in until he had to to win it was almost a half. If they had been winning he does not see field imo

If we get him, well have a chance to see "On the Field Performance," won't we? I'm just stating that I think he has the potential to outshine Tebow...he was just as highly rated in HS.

Kiffin recently said, "we need to recruit our own Tebow." If our staff can coach him up...we'll have one, and he'll make a better NFL QB prospect IMHO.

To be suspended in such a big game for newton it cannot be a one time minor event imo

I think you're blowing things out of proportion a bit, here. It was probably the skipping class variety (maybe more than once, and the coach wanted to send a message, not just a verbal warning).

Coaches do that here and it's usually a whole game suspension for such an offense. I'm sure CLK will lay down the law for the guy if they take/get him
