2026 Vols Transfer Portal Thread

My one counter is that Barnes is essentially losing everyone with experience in his program while losing his second in command. The culture that Barnes has built for the last decade is essentially done and extinct. I’m not saying that is good or bad. But it’s such an abrupt change that I don’t think many thought Barnes would do this late in his career.

I personally think Barnes has been told he can have whatever he needs to build a title winning roster. It’s just odd seeing him have this urgency all of the sudden to make abrupt roster changes like this.
This seems like a pretty good year for a full reset, if you’re CRB. You’re already losing your key guys at most every position and if there’s one thing you can be guaranteed to upgrade in the portal is at guard. You could say the same thing last season, but we at least had a loaded, experienced front court all coming back. You can’t even say that about this year’s team. Seems he knows he’s not getting over the hump overpaying to keep culture guys around when he’s an elite talent scout and evaluator.

Not trying to insult or be sarcastic, but experience and culture won't make some of these guys offensive threats/producers. Guys wanting 7 figures for 10 ppg or the hope of staying healthy when it's not happened in 2 or 3 years is crazy. As we saw this year, even with Ament and Gillespie, we had no shot at getting past the elite 8. Guys like Phillips, Boswell, an injury prone Estrella and a guy like Evans with "potential" is simply too risky. Asking for a lot of things to change and go our way.

Just time to avoid getting attached to guys like this and understand that it's now a mercenary's league/game. Now we look for production and a ROI. If it's not there, you cut bait and move on. Again, no offense.

Grateful we have the coach/administration that allows us to be excited about the prospects of a final four type team. Can you imagine being a fan of the 90% who know they have no shot at such heights.

Boswell was in a no lose situation. He either stays and gets another year better in the Tennessee/Barnes system or he likely goes to NC State with Gainey (he is from NC) and gets paid to be the culture guy that comes in with Gainey. Boswell is the one guy of the bunch i'm most bummed about losing. He took a massive leap his first full year playing. No reason to think he wouldn't do the same with another year in the Barnes system.

I agree that Barnes has to load up with scoring losing Nate and JG, but I am shocked at basically turning over the entire roster. Once again, I don't think it is a bad thing either.

No argument here. While I love guys like Boswell, he's not in Mashacks league athletically, and you just can't risk rolling into next year dependent on him producing offensively on a consistent basis. If he would accept a backup role like Burg, I'd love to see him stay. He wouldn't and I don't blame him. It is what it is.

Until schools and the NCAA figure out, collectively, that we need multi-year contracts with buyout clauses like we have for coaches and professional athletes then the chaos will continue.

The thing is, the NCAA could've instituted this and put guardrails on transfers if they'd been proactive and I think most athletes would've complied but instead they chose to not act and pretend they were blind to the changing landscape.

What is the workload for this staff having to replace almost the entire roster and down one assistant coach and player development role

Strong disagree. Few set a culture better than Barnes. I thought I would see a dropoff after losing ZZ/Mashack, but they were the same team this year. He’ll do it again.
