What type of QB is GMac?

I think we don't have a "he's money" QB like we'd like to have. As we saw with Milton and with Joey A, Heupel can do reasonably well with a guy who isn't his ideal QB for his offense.

Our run game and D are going to need to carry us unlike the Hooker year where we had a QB (and Hyatt) who could light it up at any moment.

We're going to have a good team this year but we aren't going to have that exciting, playmaking QB we all hope we have every year since Hooker caught lightning in a bottle.
Interesting take guess we’ll have to wait and see

At the end of ‘24, in the SECCG, Gunner Stockton took over for an injured Carson Beck. Nobody had seen this guy play. He was a redshirt sophomore. He started for UGA in the Sugar Bowl and throughout 2025 (I don’t like him; he’s a Snarling Chihuahua).

The point is that GMac may have only a few snaps in game time, but he could be the QB that leads the Vols to success in 2026. We won’t know until we see him start.

As for Staub, view him as being saved by Tennessee (he was at Colorado, so…). Whatever role he has in 2026, he’ll be wearing true Orange. Welcome, brother. Ball out.

Ryan Staub from CO has some game experience, even a couple of starts at CO, so more P4 experience than Joey when he got to Knoxville.

It's going to be an interesting Spring camp and the Fingers videos will be analyzed with FBI level attention on Volnation.

My money is on G-Mac but Staub could be a sleeper. I think Faizon will need time because the SEC ain't high school.
Faizon is a super QB and appeared to have control of the game in high school. I know that it is a big jump to the SEC, but the film I have seen of his play leads me to believe will be prepared for play in September if need. of course, he and most of us would prefer for him not to have to play against Texas with so little experience, and I expect he will get his learning time this Fall.

Well, I reckon I can extend the benefit of the doubt to a coach like CJH who's had to start a different QB the last 4 yrs in a row and still was able to get quite a bit of offense production. 🤔
Big difference in that and calling everyone a troll or a chicken little if they don’t believe George is the answer at QB. Not saying he for sure isn’t. We haven’t seen enough of him yet, but the staff wanted Sorsby, Leavitt, Simpson and even Aguilar back for a reason besides depth.

I just recall the same being said of Nico who, like Faizon, was a highly rated and extremely good HS QB.

I'll be happy if Faizon is that rare QB who is ready for the SEC as a true freshman but that's an enormous ask of a QB in this era.

If Faizon starts this year there's only two possibilities in my mind:
we're in a very, very, very good spot
or
we're in a very, very, very bad spot.

GMAC can win us as many games as we need to win depending on how good our defense is.

But if you look at he and Faizon HS records it does lead you to believe one of them is a championship QB. Both are very talented.

GMAC is as talented as any 2nd year QB in the SEC

I think he will do as well as ja did last year

I think CJH needs to re-evalaute his approach to QB playing time. Given that any player can leave at any time, now more than ever you're susceptible to your starter leaving (even with remaining eligibility), leaving you with no experience at the QB position. I'm not saying you need to run a two-QB system, but you need to get the non-starting QB you see as having the most potential to start next year as much playing time as possible. GM could have gotten considerably more playing time last year without costing TN games, while his inexperience is likely to cost TN games next year.
Totally agree, but that was hard to do last year with our #108th ranked defense.

Well I’ll be honest….I was in the keep JA camp but a decision has been made so it is what it is. What type of QB is GMac?

Throughout his recruiting it was noted that he was a very talented basketball player and an athletic QB. I also recall seeing his HS mixtape and he was very mobile. Understandably we can only take so much from HS film bc the SEC is a different animal.

Despite the weight gain issues what type of QB is GMac? Good deep ball? Mobility? Durability? Accuracy? Smart decision maker?

Whether it’s GMac or Brandon let’s ride!!!!! 12-0 and a natty next year!

Yeah I said it and I ain’t skkkeeeeeerrrrrddddddd!!!!!
Gmac is a skinny dual threat. That's what you need to know. If he starts he will get hurt and Fazion will take over and there will be no looking back. They both are 4.5 40 guys.

I was refuting the implication that the consensus or majority of Vol Nation was saying that we had little faith in GMac, and I just called b.s. on that.

If you are saying we don't know for sure what he will or won't do, then we are in agreement. But, he is a highly regarded football player, progressing on the path of development, under a coach who knows how to get that.

Only, that's not what I said. I was refuting the implication that the consensus of Vol Nation was that we had little faith in GMac, and I just called b.s. on that.
What faith we have in G-Mac is almost entirely based upon believing in Josh Heupel. We've seen very little of G-Mac in action.

So believing in Josh Heupel also means believing in the Josh Heupel who went after multiple QBs this year and supported Joey coming back.

A lot of us are left with: 🤷‍♂️

Josh recruited G-Mac and has developed G-Mac. When Nico left, Josh jumped Merk and G-Mac with Joey A. When Joey A wanted another year, Josh filed a brief saying we wanted him back and had a place for him. Josh also seemed to go after Simpson, Leavitt, and others in the portal.

I can believe Josh believes in G-Mac but he's also signaling that he'd like a better QB.

He’s OUR QB1 baby!!!!

Also everyone seems to be acting foolish for thinking his frame and weight today is gonna be the same 7 months from now. Cmon guys. The better view to take over this is Heupel finally has a QB again with multiple seasons of eligibility. This is a great situation to be in for the long term.

Man it’s shocking to see how little faith VN has in GMac.
I agree, as fans tend to skeptical. More than likely, 99% on this board cannot answer the question that the OP cannot answer.
I always think about the 85' team and the doubts that occurred when Robinson went down and Dickey took over. Robinson injured at T town and first pass thrown by Dickey was an interception.
The next week lost to GA Tech at home 6-3 from that game forward averaged 40+ games.

The measuring tool should be game experience and we have two QBs with zero. We have a great QB coach in CJH and a system. So to render an opinion at this point would be ludicrous and a SWAG by a bunch of posters. We have no idea. HS play is a indicator but not enough to validate.

OP asked a legitimate question but at the wrong place to ask it. What's more, he has the potential but we will have to wait and see if he can take it from the practice field to the game.

IOWs, you are asking a question that cannot be answered here on this board. Trust the coaches.
