Do we count junior varsity? My dad took me and my 2 brothers to a couple of those in the mid-60s, Army and Notre Dame! It was misting rain, but we made ponchos out of big trash bags. It was so sparsely attended and quiet that you could really hear pads poppin on the field and a few hollered directions. It was magical.

After that, I saw us play Rice (Jess Neely coach?), Ole Miss, and Auburn. All late 60s in Neyland. 🫡🧡

I believe my first game was October 2, 1982 versus Washington State Cougars. Vols won 10-0. I was 11 at the time. I think ticket price was $8.00 from a scalper outside Neyland. Oh, how times have changed.

Apparently i have won the prize. 1950 Alabama when i was 3 years old. Remember being in the stadium but nothing about the game.

My mother swore to the day she died i was yelling go to hell Alabama outside the stadium. :)

October 26 1974 - Vols vs Clemson
Conredge Holloway to Seivers for the two point conversion and the WIN!
I was 10 years old I think.
I was at that game, one of my first games if not THE first. Missed the comeback because Dad wanted to beat the traffic. He is 91 now, I still bust his chops about that.

September 14, 1985 - Vols versus UCLA in Neyland.

Tony Robinson was our QB . . . And he played an outstanding game. UT was up 26-10 and I was certain of victory . . . Until UCLA made a furious 4th quarter comeback to score two TDs AND two 2 point conversions - the tying TD drive and 2 point conversion came with 30-40 seconds left in the game.

I was stunned. It was a harbinger of things to come as a UT football fan.

But as a kid I was in awe of Tony Robinson. His injury and subsequent charge of selling cocaine was a real jolt to my young fandom.

That was my first game too. SMU. We won 28-3 I believe. Lester McClain scored on a fumble recovery.
Mine too. We intercepted their star quarterback about 4 times that day if I recall correctly. Sat in the old sorta temporary wood bleachers in the North end zone. My Mom took me. She taught me everything I know about football.

Put it on the credit card, first time to Nashville, Knoxville and Chatanooga... 2700 miles flown to see my first Vols game in Neyland... paid for good seats... 41 to 0 loss vs Georgia in Butch Jones first season. About 5 years later during the worse span in Vols football history... we made the move to Knoxville/Jeff County anyways! GBO!
