Actually you started by saying safeties were bad which everyone can agree. Then you were corrected because you mistakenly thought Martinez coached the safeties and in fact he successfully coached the CBs as I mention in my post above. Now you are pivoting to Martinez just sucks because the DBs in general suck? To recap, Banks coached the safeties and the CBs which were coached by Martinez received post season awards the last 2 years and 2 will go high in this years draft. You seem to be struggling with your argument against Martinez.
You are correct 💯. He talked about Safeties being bad and didn't have a clue that Banks coaches safeties

I think the same about you. This is a joke right? Did you watch our secondary this year?

That guy could develop a Polaroid
I watched our safeties get clowned in all year. I watched a true freshman in Ty Redmond drastically improve throughout the course of the season. WM developed Gibson, McCoy and Hood. You can make the argument about the transfers all you want. But can you show me where McCoy was a pre season AA, a Walter Camp award finalist and first team honors before coming to TN under WM?

We were missing our two starting CBs this whole year. And look how Hood developed. There is a chance he goes into the first round. Sorry that actual stats and facts defeat your argument because basically you have nothing but your blind hate.

Nope. Banks was a walk around DC this season. Martinez coached safeties while Earnest Thomas, the assistant secondary coach, handled the corners.
Banks has always coached the safeties. Auburn hired him as their safeties coach after he coached them here and at Penn State.

Tim Banks Reportedly Lands With Former Tennessee Assistant in the SEC, Will Return to Neyland Stadium in 2026 | Rocky Top Insider

"In addition to being Tennessee’s defensive coordinator for the last five seasons, Banks also served as UT’s safeties coach. His move to Auburn will keep him with his familiar position group on the defensive side of the
field. Banks also served as the safeties coach, in addition to his role as the co-DC, on Penn State’s staff from 2016 to 2020."

He did not coach our safeties in 2025

Agree 100%..Not sure why some struggle with this. Gibson wasn't even top 60 in passes defended last year..( He had 5) and Redmond was even worse. Both are DB's Martinez recruited. And don't get me started on the years prior to 24 with how bad the DB's played and he can't recruit an elite DB to save his life. There's a reason the best job he could get late in his career was C.Fla before he got hired here.
I often wonder how old fans are on here. Thanks for responding. Maybe I’m just getting old. But the last several years defenses outside of maybe 1 or 2 play soft. They don’t compare to the 90s defenses that not only wanted to beat you, they wanted to punish you.

Thanks for chiming in Miss Martinez. If you think what you are watching is elite defense then I can’t help you.

He didn’t develop Hood and McCoy. They were playing great when they got here. They continued to play well and got noticed bc they actually played in “the league”.

Just curious, were you a fan in the 90s when we had dominant defenses? I’m just trying to figure out what folks baselines are.

Portal extended his career.

This is not getting the attention it deserves, IMO.

We needed a new DC. Checked the box.

We need a new S&C coach. Crickets.

We need a new FG kicker. Ditto.

The most obvious need has been filled. There are at least two losses hiding in the next two needs.

Get. It. Done.

2026 doesn't have to be a rebuilding year. But unless the obvious needs are addressed, then 2027 will be...

Go Vols.
I agree, this needs to be addressed. I have never heard the first comment about our S@C Coach the entire time he has been here. We got to be a the forefront there, it’s a huge factor on performance on Saturdays. GBO

This was Hood’s third school…not saying he wasn’t talented but he had a really good season and might be a late first rounder if he declares..

now do I think our corners are elite technicians? No. But there certainly has been development from that room the last 2 seasons. McCoy is going to be a 🔝 20 pick without even playing a snap this season. His sophomore 🎞️ was outstanding.

lol. Nobody is claiming an elite defense. But simply saying Martinez sucks without zero actual evidence besides your opinion makes you look dumb. And making. Childish comments like oh Miss Martinez? Reinforces the dumb. Just goes to show you have no argument. So Hood and McCoy were just as good before they got here? Prove it. And yes I was a huge fan of our 90s defenses. We simply aren’t there and likely won’t be under Heupel. Why? His offensive system. But by all means continue to believe a coach that might put two guys in the first round of the draft and a freshman AA sucks 😂😂😂😂

Here is yet more proof of Martinez being a good coach. Elite? No. Good? Yes.

Martinez sucks. The portal has extended his career by masking his inability to actually coach.

Inge may be a good man but his LBs were just bad this year.

Keep Garner if he wants to be here and clean house.
Thats a narrow way to look at Martinez. He deserves credit for what he’s done in the portal. Even if you doubt his coaching, he’s shown he knows how to identify talent and put guys in the league. McCoy and Hood will hear their names called in the 1st round. That earns credibility when the next guy hits the portal. The safeties were a far bigger issue than the short handed CB room. By no means do I think he’s elite but he’s a solid coach that gets far more hate than he deserves

He sucks. I will say this, he should donate part of his pay to Garner. When the line got pressure it covered up his deficiencies. When don’t get pressure I will refer to the first sentence of my post.

Now run along
Some of y'all don't know who DeerPark is and it shows. So does your age and maturity level.

Corners were not the problem this year. Maybe early, you could say, with Redmond in there taking his lumps. But at the end of the year, Redmond was playing pretty darn well. Safeties, linebackers, and defensive tackle (the middle of the field), was our problem this year.

Ok. You Win. You've changed my mind.

Guess we all have to agree.

What I have learned is that the dark years have lowered folks standards.

Also thin skin is common. Many folks haven’t the ability to poke fun anymore.

Next year may not be better but it will be different. Hopefully we won’t be soft.

WM will be gone soon and he won’t look back. Just like his players defending a receiver.

Colton Hood couldn't crack the depth chart at Colorado and is an NFL player after a year with Martinez. He also got a true freshman ready to have a freshman All-SEC caliber season. Nobody did more with less the last two years than Martinez.

NFL scouts and front office people have valued him and the players he produces dating back to his time at Georgia and his first stint at Tennessee. The list of his NFL products that came in as 3* or lower players is lengthy.

You're not required to like him, but you don't know the intricacies of defensive football if you think he's bad at his job.
Martinez seems to have pros and cons. Agree with what you said, except that often your freshmen All SEC are due to getting the amount of playing time. It’s not as if he came in and beat out an established starter. I’d say that from my eyes he did improve. I think the DB coach should have control over all those defensive backfield positions, but I know these programs want to have as many on the field coaches as possible.
