If Bama makes the CFP

Miami should be in over Notre Dame because they won the head to head. And their strength of schedule and strength of record are nearly identical.

Bama gets the same nod over Vandy. Yeah, Bama has 3 losses but I dont see how you drop them very far since they split the season with Georgia.

It wouldn’t be a “precedent.” UGA was undefeated, and then lost to Bama in the SEC championship game in 2023, and they were left out of the playoff that year.

It wouldn’t be a “precedent.” It’s happened before. UGA was undefeated, but then left out of the playoff when they lost to Bama in 2023.

Sean McDonough brought up a good point I hadn’t considered: the committee jumped Alabama ahead of Notre Dame this week, even though both teams won last weekend. Perhaps that was their way of giving themselves wiggle room if Bama lost the SECCG?

I think the right thing to do is leave them out as a 3-loss team, but it will be very interesting to see what happens tomorrow.

The top ten of last weeks rankings are all in (and were never falling out this weekend). They have to take Tulane and James Madison because they are required to take the five highest ranked conference winners. I do not see them magically leaping a 5 loss Duke team above them in the rankings. Miami and the ACC are out.

I’ve changed my tune on this. I think Miami is in and either Bama or Notre Dame is out. I forgot that the committee had moved Bama ahead of ND last week, even though both won on Nov. 29. Choosing Miami or ND for the final at-large spot would allow them to do three things:

1. Protect the integrity of championship games by not penalizing a team for losing in one.

2. Utilize the easiest of metrics (head-to-head) to select the final At-large team, which protects the emphasis on scheduling good teams.

3. Maintain harmony among the P4 leagues by giving a bid to an ACC team.

The committee could also decide a team with three losses isn’t getting in - that’s an easy data point to default to, and Bama’s bad loss to FSU is a black eye ND or Miami doesn’t have.

Personally, I think ND is the best of those three teams right now. I also think Alabama has the best body of work of the three. It will be interesting to see what the committee does.

I think it's between Bama and Miami for #10. ND moves up to the #9 spot vacated by Bama. The question is how far does Bama fall.

I also think the CFP moves Miami up from #12 to #10. This lets them put an ACC team in the CFP, whether they deserve it or not. Same as ND.

Bama drops to #11, and thus is eliminated from the CFP. Or...Bama drops to #10, Miami moves up to #11, and the ACC is eliminated.

I think there will be an effort in that room to drop Bama just far enough for Miami to sneak in as an ACC rep. ND is locked in. That debate is over.
