Tennessee 30, Auburn 29
Dec. 6, 1997

Yet another SEC Championship Game went down to the wire in 1997, when Tennesee defeated Auburn, 30-29.

Before a Georgia Dome Sporting Event record crowd of 74,896, the Vols came from a 20-7 second quarter deficit to defeat the Tigers on Peyton Manning's 73-yard TD pass to Marcus Nash early in the fourth quarter.

A defensive struggle ensued and the Vols were off to the FedEx Orange Bowl to play for the Bowl Alliance National Championship while the Tigers returned to Atlanta to play in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.

The Vols got on the scoreboard first on a 40-yard TD pass from Manning to Peerless Price. However, that was all the scoring Tennessee could muster until a Jeff Hall 27-yard field goal midway through the second quarter.

In the meantime, Auburn accounted for 20 unanswered points, led by a 24-yard fumble return by Brad Ware and a 51-yard TD pass from Dameyune Craig to Tyrone Goodson. AU's Jaret Holmes also hit two field goals.

After the two teams traded touchdowns midway through the third quarter, Tennessee mounted its charge. Behind 27-17, UT scored on a 46-yard pass from Manning to Price. On the PAT attempt, Auburn's Quinton Reese returned the blocked kick for a two-point conversion to pull the Vols to within six, 29-23.

That set up the heroics on Nash's 73-yard TD reception from Manning and Hall's PAT that won the game for Tennessee.

The game's MVP was UT quarterback Peyton Manning, who completed 25 of 43 passes for 373 yards with four TDs and two interceptions.

Winning a sec championship game while giving up 6 turnovers is crazy. So much talent. One of Peyton’s finest games

Back in the day of "the human drama of athletic competition," the Olympics were amateur, collegiate athletics amateur, etc. I'm not talking about your neighborhood street pick up games. Sheesh.
Olympic athletes even got great publicity and potential opportunities.

College athletes have been compensated for decades. At minimum, tuition and board. Was never an amateur sport.

Intramural is a true amateur sport. Like high school volleyball or mathletes. Those folks do it for the love and nothing else. Fans can enjoy that if they want. I like watching the best. And the best are well paid, deservedly so.

Don’t think I’ve seen anyone post this yet today. But….sheesh. Wish the Haslems cared as much about Tennessee as the top donors at other schools. This is an insane amount of money from one person.

Lol odd number.

“Imma give $400M. No, no… no time to get cheap - make it 400 AND ONE million dollars”

Hope so. He missed his big opp last year after having B2B top notch offenses.

Hopefully don't miss our 2 best DBs next year and we go right back to a top-3 SEC defense like before.

With this fast of an offense, would be another spectacular feat to pull off.
You dont have to have 2 nfl corners to field an average defense…

Yeah... 2 NFL corners doesn't completely change your scheme...uhm it does...😅🤣We couldn't do what we hoped to schematically, all season. Defense wasn't built to stuff the rest, it was built around the studs.

Stop joshin' around.

Last seasons DL was an NFL DL. That's the difference imo. It hides the flaws because the QB doesn't have time. Kind of like how Josh Dobbs hid the issues in the program. But last season means nothing. This year. Year five. Was objectively beyond disaster all around.
This year was very unacceptable. Was it because we lost 3/5 of our original secondary and decline on the DL? From 22-24, we finished top 5 in points allowed per game and in yards per play.in the SEC. Did we have the talent to finish higher or was it a coaching issue?

This was year 5. We should be able to absorb injuries with coached up HS players by now.

Hood was very good this season and Redmond was very solid post UGA game
