Tennessee 30, Auburn 29
Dec. 6, 1997

Yet another SEC Championship Game went down to the wire in 1997, when Tennesee defeated Auburn, 30-29.

Before a Georgia Dome Sporting Event record crowd of 74,896, the Vols came from a 20-7 second quarter deficit to defeat the Tigers on Peyton Manning's 73-yard TD pass to Marcus Nash early in the fourth quarter.

A defensive struggle ensued and the Vols were off to the FedEx Orange Bowl to play for the Bowl Alliance National Championship while the Tigers returned to Atlanta to play in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.

The Vols got on the scoreboard first on a 40-yard TD pass from Manning to Peerless Price. However, that was all the scoring Tennessee could muster until a Jeff Hall 27-yard field goal midway through the second quarter.

In the meantime, Auburn accounted for 20 unanswered points, led by a 24-yard fumble return by Brad Ware and a 51-yard TD pass from Dameyune Craig to Tyrone Goodson. AU's Jaret Holmes also hit two field goals.

After the two teams traded touchdowns midway through the third quarter, Tennessee mounted its charge. Behind 27-17, UT scored on a 46-yard pass from Manning to Price. On the PAT attempt, Auburn's Quinton Reese returned the blocked kick for a two-point conversion to pull the Vols to within six, 29-23.

That set up the heroics on Nash's 73-yard TD reception from Manning and Hall's PAT that won the game for Tennessee.

The game's MVP was UT quarterback Peyton Manning, who completed 25 of 43 passes for 373 yards with four TDs and two interceptions.

From a legal standpoint, it's a penalty.

Depending on the language, It's doubtful UGA wins anything here (certainly not 390k,). I doubt they expect to win. It's mostly meant to be a detergent to keep other players from doing it.
The timing definitely shows UGAs purpose. From what I saw the contract had a 30 day repayment window once he left (last year). So they wait this whole time until after signing day (so teams can’t use it for negative recruiting on current commits) and then right before the portal opens to deter current players

Yeah, had a punt returner get run over so should have been interference. Ball bounced and hit another NT player. Recovered by Tulane on the 10. Tulane then scores on 4th down, but looked like runner did not score. Reviewed, but left as a TD. Later, Tulane fumbles an interception at the 1 that goes through the end zone. Should be a touch back, but was called a TD. Reviewed and still left it as a TD. SEC level incompetence.
You are so wrong.

The SEC refs are not Incompetent. Such a stupid statement.

The SEC office and refs are corrupt for their purposes.

To add to this, everyone is clinging to 2024’s defense, but was it really THAT impressive? Heres the #’s:

Team/national ranking ppg/ points we allowed
Osu- 14th ppg- 42 points given up

Bama-22nd -24 given up

Uga- 36th -31 given up

Arky- 42nd- 19 given up

Flordia-63rd - 17 points given up

Vandy- 71st - 23 points

Msu-84th - 14 points

Ou-95th - 15 points

UK-121st - 18 points

We gave up an avg of 29 ppg vs top 50 offenses
Lmao...stop with this crap. Im not the biggest Banks fan but my God, trying to say that the 24' defense was not impressive..is idiotic.

This year we gave up 31+ points in 7 of 8 conference games. Only gave up less than 20 points twice this season. Last seasons defense was really good. Got to give Banks credit for last year especially since the offense was garbage with Nico.

Also, Bama only scored 17 points on us last year. So only gave up 20+ three times last year.

yep. not the end of the world
Actually, I think it would in so much as it confirms Hype's loyalty will be his fatal flaw.

I want CJH here for 25 more years stacking up conference titles, playoff appearances and a handful of NC's. But he cannot do that if he is unwilling to actually terminate assistants. Being their buddy and compassionate is admirable, but subpar assistants won't respect that, they'll abuse it. And nobody has a 100% success rate on hires.

People have to understand there are consequences to failure.

Last seasons DL was an NFL DL. That's the difference imo. It hides the flaws because the QB doesn't have time. Kind of like how Josh Dobbs hid the issues in the program. But last season means nothing. This year. Year five. Was objectively beyond disaster all around.

Tennessee Football 2025 Outgoing Transfer Tracker: Season Recap | Rocky Top Insider

All in all, smart money and roster moves. Only two big losses.

Big loss:

Jakobe Thomas
Christian Charles - especially with Boo saga

Would've helped:

Chas Nimrod, Kaleb Webb, Christian Harrison, and Kalib Perry. I think all would have seen significant minutes.

No real impact on production but could've given minutes:

Jalen Smith, Jayson Jenkins, Larry Johnson, John Slaughter, Charlie Browder, Holden Staes, and Jordan Matthews.

No loss at all (based on this year or replaced production):

Bussel, Spillman, , Keith, Sneed, Leacock, Seldon, Moore, Squirrel. Nico

Biggest gains (all based on this year):

Joey Aguilar - Need I say more? Upgrade and nice trade!
Colton Hood - We won that trade! Upgrade to Slaughter
Wendell Moe - Fantastic pick up. Upgrade to Johnson
Sam Pendelton - Just an amazing portal pickup. Upgrade to Vysen Lang

Helped:

Star Thomas

Nope:

Josh Schell

Fascinating look back. I had no idea Jakobe Thomas had such a good year. We definitely dropped the ball there, which doubly hurts because he was a guy who spoke of bleeding orange when he transferred here.

Comical to me how Jayson Jenkins and Squirrel White left for greener pastures, and both were complete non-factors. I really thought Jenkins was going to be in the rotation here this year, but he went on to do nothing for FSU (5 takcles, 1 sack).

Nate Spillman - Football - Austin Peay State University Athletics I remember when Spillman signed with us, I couldn't find the silver lining because he was still such a nonfactor on his HS team. Looks like he recorded zero offensive statistics for Austin Peay, also. And I disagree that guys like Leacock or Webb would've gotten snaps. Nimrod maybe but to what end? Hes not a difference maker so I appreciated us giving those snaps to our three headed monster, plus the young guys.

Overall, it feels like we did awesome in the portal. Would've been nice to have kept Jakobe Thomas though.
