Game Thread: Lady Vols v UT-Martin, Away, Sun. Nov 9th, 3PM, ESPN+; (Win 72-61)

I told everyone in hear NC STATE was overrated and would be exposed in the next few weeks, they will tank in the rankings soon enough. So can we please stop acting like we loss to some great team.
losing to a ranked team by 1 doesn’t make you overrated. they might be, but that one games doesn’t make them that.

They weren't exposed today. That last ten seconds it was any ones game and you can argue that Brooks got fouled on that drive and no call. I thought USC looked like an athletic team Jazzy Davidson already playing really well for a freshman. Not saying they are in the top seven or eight teams, but they are definitely on the fringe of the top ten just like the Lady Vols.

Am surprised Latham cannot earn more minutes, she is getting the least so far in her career. She only got 8 today unless I am mistaken. she s getting the least PT on the team at this point, maybe we don’t know everything but she sure looks like she needs some minutes.

latham hasn’t been a scorer so far in her time at tennessee. she really needs to look to score if she wants more time.

The freshmen are going to come along pretty quickly. They are obviously talented but need live game reps. They’re still pretty tentative.

Civil is setting herself apart so far. Really like her energy and pace when she is on the floor. She and Coop make a tough combo on the floor together.

Our best lineup is Pauldo, Civil, Cooper, Barker, Spearman.

That is the LVs best 5 and again only 3 games in, but there is too much drop off when getting outside that core 5. And when Coop is supbar, that spells real trouble.

Ruby's dismissal has been a major blow to the team's depth (and her midrange game is sorely missed), I will quit harping on this theme after today but I just want to reiterate the mathematics of squad building-- subtracting a star player and senior leader from a team does NOT make itT BETTER!.

From the stat line, it looks Nya had a decent game so that is a plus. She is going to be an important piece this season. Prawl is going to have to fast track and Latham is going to have to do more. Her minutes and output have been quite limited to this point.

We are suspect in the post.

Zee must get it going (and she is capable). I am just not sure how much load Wolfenberger is going to be able too shoulder effectively, against elite comp. She looks and plays like a freshman rather than a senior.

Zee and Hollingshead made for a stronger and more versatile post pairing than we have now.

Hurst is clearly a "project player" and is not likely to be a factor against the Texas, LSU, South Carolina, Uconn tier.

Wynn is limited by her injury and a year off so a lot of TBD in her case. Boyd has been displaced in core roster an now looks a little lost.

Pauldo has a way to go to get up to Spencer's level (and if she does that as a freshman that will be impressive as heck because Sam was a quality college PG).

What we are seeing is that this teams "depth" is a bit of an illusion. CKC may be dialing back on the super aggressive pressing style (just repeating what was said in the game thread) because her team is not really ten to twelve deep (right now it looks like an iffy 8 to 9 at best).

I wouldn't want to be around Pratt tomorrow either.

I know we have to spend so much time learning the system but this makes us so far behind even teams from minor conferences in terms of passing, assists, and defense. Ut Martin had some beautiful offensive sets and passes that kept them in the game. Meanwhile, we had to work so hard for an open look, which almost always was a three-point shot rather than an easier shot. If someone had looked at our size and athleticism advantages beforehand, they would be bewildered why we can't throw the ball to our bigs. Most of them just hang out far away from the basket. I am not getting the veterans of this offense not looking any better than they do. Except for the NC State game for Cooper, all of them look like the backslid rather than progressed. Cooper even had a negative +/-stat for this game, which I doubt ever happened against this type of opponent last year. Latham does look pretty good but that is not translating to points. Perhaps the veterans are the most impacted emotionally by Jada being off the team, though it is hard to think that this accounts for all the sluggishness. Civil stood way out this game, and Mia had a nice 2nd half. Robinson had her moments today but too often she seems in SMU mode where she is not reading the court looking for the best offensive options. Outside of Civil and winning the game, the only other positive is that it is still early November. We need some warp speed improvement before getting to the meat of our schedule.

Tough, gritty win in front of a sold-out crowd at UT Martin.
Good job by this team taking care of business in the 2nd half.
This is a Top 10 team and they will be in every game this season from start to finish.
This is exactly the kind of game this group needs to start the season on the road.
The LVs are the deepest team in WBB.
The rotation is 11 strong and that 11 can play with any team in WBB.
GBO🍊.

I have to believe this team will turn the corner eventually. The light will come on and they'll start looking better and better. I don't know if they'll get better enough to improve on last year's finish, but I'm fairly certain it's still too early to throw in the towel on this group.

Clearly they don't have "it" as a group right now, but they've had their moments here and there as a team, and there has been quite a few positive moments from individual players.

I've resolved to not let any of the first quarter of the season's disappointments take all the joy out of supporting the Lady Vols the entire season. I honestly can't imagine it even possible that this Tennessee team can't and won't get significantly better than they've (as a team) shown so far.

Anyone concerned about their fan sanity right now might do well to shift their focus to the positives only for a bit. I mean, how can we not be excited about Civil, right?!

They play us close every year. It is not something new. We won. Look forward to the next game.

It’s a W. But whether they play us close or not all the time it is disconcerting that Kim has talked about the lack of motivation or drive and it rears its head again. It just might not be in this teams DNA 🧬

Hopefully they get it together and soon. Still riding with them but something has to change. Maybe cut the rotation down for those not giving their all. That would mean a change in the system and that might also not be so bad.

agree with all of this. i've been surprised by by latham and boyd regressing, they both looked more comfortable last year. but also they had two legit guards who were super experienced and vocal about where to go/what to do in jewel and sam.

No doubt loosing Ruby hurt the team early but could have hurt more long term. Mia and Mya were the team they played on in highschool. Now they have to learn to facilitate the basketball It will take time. Can't believe how poor the help side defense is in the half court. That's not all on the coaches some of it is the feel for the game but can be taught. Not helping stop the ball when it gets to the paint will cause lots of problems. They have lots to work on but there's definitely time.

I wasn't debating CKC's decision (and there is a whole thread on that) but there were more than a few on this board, who proclaimed that not having Ruby would make the team better because her minutes would go to the freshmen players.
