Also, from the 7-minute mark, NKU only scored 3 points, and were scoreless from the 5-minute mark. We scored 14 points the last 5 minutes. This is what really excites me about this team, and it’s the literal definition of ”wearing them down.” Waves of fresh, talented guys coming at the opponent for 40 minutes.

NKU projects to be a bad team (bottom 20% of the NCAA) and they looked like it.

North Florida projects to be even worse. A bottom 5% team.

But Rice projects to be a little above average as Coach Lanier returns to Knoxville. They played Oregon within four points in their opener.

Against northern Kentucky?

He's a good player, I never said otherwise.
You literally compared one game stat line for VT freshman saying you thought Ament would be that type of player. That is denigrating Ament for no reason.

Want to post a cool stat line from another team? Sure ok. But no reason to belittle great production from Ament by comparing him to one game stat line of another player.

I am personally loving Ament, will be curious how he handles the overly physical defense of SEC play though.

Considering Ament was widely discussed as the most raw of the top prospects, what he has done in the first two games has been impressive. And he’ll only improve.

It’s so weird seeing all the Nate Ament hate on social media by non-Tennessee fans. I see all those draft analyst accounts Tweeting out the top freshmen stat lines every night and if you look under every Ament post it’s just a bunch of people calling him overrated and that he sucks. Maybe it’s just because he went to Tennessee instead of Duke or Kentucky as a 5-star but I’m not sure how you can watch his first two performances and think he sucks.

Yep.

20.5ppg
52% FG
8.5rpg
26.5mpg

Dude has played well, and only going to get better.

Both guys have 41 points through 2 games, Ament has done it in 10 less minutes and on a better shooting percentage…we gonna do this all year where folks downplay how good he is?

There’s a very clear difference in how these kids move.

Ament lacks an explosive first step and is stiff in the hips. He’s going to be a good player for us, I just don’t see a top 3-5 pick like we were led to believe.

Ament isn’t a finished product. He’s 2 games into his collegiate career. Who’s to say what he looks like in March? I’m not really sure what more he could do through 2 games on limited minutes.

He’s 6’11”, he doesn’t have to be explosive…

Agreed. He’s averaging 20.5 PPG off 52% FG and 37.5% from 3PT. Got to give him a chance to get settled first.

Probably because a really bad 5-10 minute stretch of rebounding in the first half sticks out in my mind. I wouldn’t have guessed it looked that way in the box score.
In fairness to you, I just watched the Mercer game and I would have walked away with the same opinion of our rebounding and sense of surprise at the final numbers.

Some of the issue is we want to run, so guards are creeping out at times, or they contest the shot then stand and watch the ball, then a long rebound bounds over the heads of the big men we have in position and guards aren’t back in around the ft line ish to grab the long rebound. Coaches got on guards at least 3 times last game as rebounds hit the floor and bounced before grabbed by the other team.

Noticed a lot of that too. Those in-between caroms that seemingly find their way to the floor/players between the bigs and the guards.

Something else I noticed in that Mercer game is that with about 2:10 to play, Ament drives and draws a blocking foul. After the foul (and whistle), he gathers his feet, takes another step and hits the layup. The official counts the basket.

I know there is an emphasis, this year, on giving more leniency on continuation, but the way I have seen that play officiated thru one week is going to drive both coaches and fans, alike, crazy. No consistency, at all. There is no way he should have been allowed continuation on that play when he had time to gather himself, take another step, and then attempt the shot.
