The Official “Regular Posters of the Basketball Forum” Thread

They shot 30% from the field and 21% from 3, not gonna get much better defensively than that…they had 16 points off our turnovers, take care of the ball and they don’t break 45 points, but that’s not on the defense.
On his show last night, Barnes specifically mentioned how disappointed he was in our post defense in the 2nd half, especially with the fact we were bigger inside.

I understand that and I am sure you realize they missed a ton of open shots that SEC caliber teams probably will not miss. Not sure we can contribute their shooting percentages to great defense. We had a hard time staying in front and didn't defend ball screens very well. It is not the same tough, hard nosed defensive teams we have had in the past.

Not to be rude, but no ****?

9 brand new starters and Cade was the only returning player with more than last season for any experience.

You didn’t think a completely brand new team was going to come out in game 1 & look as good as the previous teams with 2-3 year guys filling the roster did you?

The numbers are deceiving because IMO, we played TERRIBLE from an offensive execution standpoint.

Our FG% was so high IMO, because we were so much bigger and stronger than them. JP got most of his with straight up backyard dad bully ball. And Ament was just backing guys down and shooting over them.

Basically. Lots of free points we won’t be so lucky to have against better competition.

Now defense I thought was fine besides not rebounding as well as I’d have liked.
Genuine question as someone who hasn't gotten a chance to watch the game, yet, I'm interested as to what you were upset with re: rebounding? We won the boards 54-32 and had 16 ORebs.

I noticed Mercer had 13 ORebs, so maybe you are referring to that. Not sure how many 2nd chance pts that translated to.

Missed the last 10-15 mins of game time last night and just got to watch it back. Still very high on this team and, while we looked very rusty last night, I still see a lot of good on both ends that we can grow into a great team from. Like Mookie said, I think this will likely be a later-blooming team than we’ve had in the last few seasons, but the depth may give them a higher ceiling.

That said, and I hate to continually beat on this, if Boswell is still the answer at 2 guard by conference play… I’ll be greatly reducing my optimism. I’m waiting on the Houston/Rutgers games before I really start worrying about this at all - CRB always plays some wacko lineups in buy-games and that may be more needed this year than ever, for a lot of reasons. Burg has really looked good in the backup PG role, but I also love the versatility he gives us playing with Kobi. I really hope (and think) we see him take a lot of Boswell’s minutes as he grows into the system and gets more comfortable with the American game. I often forget how late he arrived here, so thinking about him improving every time he takes the floor makes me very excited to see his final form, later this season and beyond.
I thought he played his best game as a Vol, and I think his plus/minus was like 19, highest on the team. What from last night did you not like, or are you just talking about his whole volume of work?

Personally, if what we saw last night was what we are going to see from now on, I'll be happy to have him starting (again, still not a large volume of work to go on).

Edit: You already answered my question above. I will add to my post that I think we have (at least) two freshmen who can play, and I hope that they get a full opportunity. No need to punish them for being young, if they can add to the team. In the case of Brown, this feels like the first time in my lifetime that we have the opportunity to dominate down low, and he can be a big (no pun intended) part of that.

U didn’t ask me and there were discussions about O rebounds last night. Here what I saw:
-when a 3 almost banks in or knicks the rim or comes off the front end to the free throw line, shots come off hard and being in position doesn’t matter as much.
-we give up oppo side rebounds when we go for blocks at times
- we gave up a couple Angel Reese orebs,
-it’s not like we were not boxing out or not going after the ball. Rebounding Long bricks ends up being in the right place and right time.

Probably because a really bad 5-10 minute stretch of rebounding in the first half sticks out in my mind. I wouldn’t have guessed it looked that way in the box score.

Okay, I tried to tone it down, but Brown makes the all-SEC freshman team and the future looks bright. He plays like me in my mid to late 20's when I became a power forward instead of a wing. Believe it or not, that's a compliment. His basketball IQ is off the charts, especially for a freshman. There's not a lot of minutes down low, but he seems to already have earned more than I thought he would get. Of course, that was Mercer, but he looked great against Duke, also. Still, there's 4 guys ahead of him, but that Brown/JP tandem looked better than everybody else to me

He seems like a higher ceiling, more offensively skilled Dylan Cardwell. Motor and defensive and rebounding IQ off the charts. But brown actually has great touch around the rim. Could not possibly be more excited to see what he turns into in his time here.

Ok I'm trying to learn so the new faces on this team. My big question is who are the two gritty tough physical inside presences we expect this year. Okpara is improved but his frame is light.

I’ve been very loud and vocal about Boswell not needing to play and my disappoint when he started against Duke and last night also, with that said I actually thought he played pretty well last night. Looking at it this morning and that belief is backed up, he far and away had a team best +19 overall, now sometimes those numbers don’t tell a whole story so it’ll be something to monitor, but it matches what my eyes saw in the moment also. With that said, if you’re going to play him it limits some other guys minutes imo, you can’t really play Boswell with Phillips, and really even with Okpara is some issues, better suited with Carey and Estrella for sure as they bring more offensive game.

He grabbed 8 boards in 17 minutes.

If he continues to do that, Barnes will find him minutes.

Hey guys, gonna try and be more around the basketball forum this year. Some of you might know me and @005 have done a podcast in the past and we restarted it this year. This was our basketball preview and we plan on doing basketball talk once a week after football season. I won’t post every episode we do, don’t want to inundate the board with podcast links. I know there are not many Vol basketball podcast previews, I thought you guys might enjoy.
