Only one meaningful achievement left for this team

It’s still a pendulum, but to say to think of something as a pendulum because it moves back and forth in a way that isn’t in any way like a pendulum moves isn’t really how we do metaphors.

For the ebb and flow of success to have a pendulum-like movement, Heupel would have to have really crashed and burned in 2023, like a 1 or 2 win season.
No he wouldn’t have because external forces slowed down the rock back of the pendulum once Milton took over. You’re implying a pendulum must always go back and forth and pretending it exists in a vacuum. Fact is there will always be outside forces to effect the flow of a pendulum. A pendulum in reality is different than the “idea of a pendulum” that you are referencing.

A pendulum cannot go left, right, and then left again without first going to the midpoint and then going further right. That is the nature of a pendulum. You’re describing something that isn’t functioning as a pendulum.

If you were looking at a pendulum’s path as the bottom half of a clock face, you’re describing a pendulum that drops from 3, stops at 5, bounces up to 4, goes back to 5, and then back to 3. That’s not a pendulum movement.

The whole pendulum effect is that the harder you push us into the win column, the harder the force is going to be pushing you back into losses. Football programs build pretty much the opposite way. The more momentum you get going toward nine wins, the easier it is to keep winning nine.
If a pendulum drops and I stop the pendulum mid force then it is still a pendulum that i have manipulated. That being said I’m kinda bored with this one because this has just turned into you telling me what I said versus arguing theories. I won’t be replying anymore! Thank you for the fun debate brother!

2025 Tennessee has failed to do many things:

End streak with Georgia
End losing streak in Tuscaloosa
Make playoff and or Atlanta

Only one meaningful goal left, win in Gainesville and end that streak. Heupel should already start coaching for that game because New Mexico doesn't mater.
Nah. Even if they lose in the swamp, beating Vandy and nuking their playoff opportunity and 8 wins for the good guys is plenty of reason to finish as strong as possible. 8 wins would be an achievement to be sure. Anything but 7-5....but that's coming I'm sad to say.

Pendulums rarely exist in a vacuum. I’ve never seen one and I doubt you have either. I don’t know why you keep bringing that up. Friction from air minimally impacts things.

a weight hung from a fixed point so that it can swing freely backward and forward, especially a rod with a weight at the end that regulatesthe mechanism of a clock.

McAfee just said on Gameday “in year two, Mike Elko has A&M ahead of schedule” with the rebuild.

Heupel had us in the same spot in his second season: undefeated after eight games and ranked in the top 3.

Does that mean we’re now behind schedule, or that 2022 was a fluke?
Considering CJH started off with 32 scholarship players with scholarship reductions, 2022 was an offensive masterpiece with bad defense. Considering his track record 2022 was no fluke.

In Nashville for years the joke was always that UT was Vandy’s bowl game. That game meant more to them than anything. This year the roles are reversed. 9-3 with the shape this roster has gotten in and the lack of discipline would be a great finish.

Several goals that could still be met:

-Beating Florida in the Swamp
-Ruining Vanderbilt’s season
-Getting to 10 wins for the third time in the last 5 seasons

Winning in the Swamp and denying Vandy a playoff spot would almost make up for not going to the playoff. Almost…

To me beating Vanderbilt is number one on the list. They will almost certainly win next weekend so shutting that sniveling jerk qb of theirs up and sending them to a bowl game would bring me much joy. Misery loves company.

You’re making an argument based on emotion, not facts. I don’t know how you can say that with a straight face based on the numbers. A&M has the #1 SOR and their SOS is #16 according to the metrics. Our SOS is #18 and we’re 6-3.
Just happy we don't play Texas AM. They would spank us good.

The only thing left to play for is Brazzell winning the Biletnikoff.

After losing 3 the season is over in modern CF. The rest of the season (as far as w & l) doesn’t really matter.

Definitely more potential downside left in the season than upside. It will be interesting to see how players respond to that in the NIL era.

The most maddening thing is that Vandy and us have reversed roles. We will be playing the spoiler and they will be the favorite when they come to town. No excuse for that in the 5th year of a rebuilding effort and given the money we spend compared to them.

The OK game was just a flat out brutal loss that should not have happened.
If we don't beat Vandy, we're going to need either ETSU or Miss St. to finish strong so we can say we beat a team with a winning record this year

Sounds line you are a terribly negative person. This has been a very successful season. This team came in with many calling for 6 losses or more. They absolutely should've beaten Georgia. They messed that one up and paid the price. The Alabama game got away from them, but that's a top 4 team in the nation. Oklahoma was the only blip on the radar. Tennessee is 14 points better than them on 90% of the days.

Crap happens man. Only 1 team wins it all. The amount of actual production that left this team last year is staggering. Yet they are a few plays away from being a 1 loss team.

Everyone would prefer to be in Atalanta.

I will remember this season as a success up to this point. They just need to go 3-0 the rest of the way and finish it off.

9-3 is a great year, under the circumstances.

We are 6-3, not 9-3. What is our best win? An overtime miracle win over Miss State? This hasn't been a good year.

The only real win was breaking the losing streak against Arkansas.

Now if Tennessee goes 9-3, I would be happy even with the botched opportunity against Georgia and losing two home games (we shouldn't lose at home).

I don’t feel confident about UF or Vandy. The OU game was such a self inflicted disaster and Tenn just has not been clutch.

Still like Joey, without him, Tenn likely does not have a winning record right now.

But you better believe Vandy is gonna come after Tennessee with everything they’ve got.

Pavia is a decent quarterback, but he’s such a douche bag. I’d hate for Tenn to lose to him.

I haven’t read all the replies so forgive me if someone touched on this already.

I understand your point, but the last paragraph tells me there are still meaningful achievements to be had. Beating Florida in the a swamp is rare, even when we have the better team. That would be an achievement.

And even though they’ve had a great year by their standards, a win over Vandy to remind everyone that they are still little sister — that would be worthwhile in my opinion.

I’ll take beating Fla in the swamp, knocking Candy out of the cfp and a nice bowl game in Florida
If we don't win in Gainesville this year with a Florida team who may have quit by then, it would be a terrible thing for Heupel. He better not lose to Vandy, if he does his seat is red hot next year
Hate to burst your bubble, but there’s a good chance they lose to Vandy. They haven't faded in November like years past.

Right now, UF looks like a bad matchup for the Vols. Couple that with a hostile crowd (they will show up) and the staff’s SEC road struggles … I don’t think the Vols get it done. Happy to eat crow if they do, but it unlikely. If they lose, Volnation is going to get hostile. Thats’s life in year 5 for this staff.
I’m more confident winning at Florida than beating Vandy at home. Who would have thought?
