Herbstreit hot take on Tennessee - Lock down Heupel

Beat Florida and the same goofy fans calling for his head will be wanting a ticker tape parade.
Would also be the case if that field goal against Georgia was just a few more yards to the right.
Fans seem to forget how Georgia, Alabama, and Florida used to blow us off the field pre Heupel. Now we are in every game with a good chance to win.
The only real difference that remains is that Georgia and Alabama have enough talent to overcome mistakes. We don’t yet.

We hired Pruitt because we didn’t actually conduct a search in the aftermath of the gettable good coaches. Stopping the Schiano hire was the right call. Just because they screwed up the hire after Schiano doesn’t mean it was wrong.
Bringing back The Fat Man was the biggest mistake.

He's right. It seems most of our more emotional fans have short memories. Two decades of suck guys. One bad year and four successfull in a row. I would give man up to 10 to win a title if he can win 9-10 every year in that time.

Some of us have long memories and remember Coach Majors winning 3 SEC Titles and Coach Fulmer winning 2 SEC Titles and a National Title. Yeah, we had a bad stretch, but quit acting like UT wasn't or can't be a top tier SEC program. I have seen it with my own eyes.

We just put up over 400 yds on what is statistically the best SEC defense. That's after a 500 yard game at KY. Hype is a good coach. We've got a good recruiting class coming in, and things look good for next year. Whether he thinks he needs to make coaching adjustments is up to him, but I think Banks deserves another year.
I think it is hard to judge banks this year based on losing our top two DBs. Sometimes it has been rough. Even on close downs our DBs are playing so far off. Hopefully we fix those issues. If the defense can even remotely resemble last year’s next year he will hold off the doubters.

It took Majors a while to get the program to that point. That’s key there. In a world of instant gratification and constant surges of dopamine we have forgotten what patience means.

Same, I truly believe The Pirate could have won a championship here. We could have provided him with resources to get the players he needed to get over the top. The man was the best at getting more from less may he Rest In Peace
I believe so too. Even if hadn’t won a chip I think he would have brought us back to relevance quickly similar to how Heupel did. Regardless if he did my thought process was he would make TN games fun to watch.

It must be Doug Dickey. We've ousted or eased out everyone else except Kiffen. Given a little more time we would probably have sacked him too.
Yep.
And how often has the ousted coach been replaced by a better coach?

These fans constantly screaming for coaching changes are delusional.

I agree with Kirk (not the 100 years part), but if he thinks the fanbase is ridiculous now, watch what happens if we lose to Vandy at home!
Oh if they lose to Vandy at home that seat warmer will be turned on and at the 3/4 level

Who is the last coach TN had worth keeping?

I don't know why that matters, this isn't a Danny White or upper administration thread. Heupel has no control over who we hired in the past or who we hire in the future. But Kiffin was the last coach worth keeping, again, for whatever that matters.

You are basing that on where he is now - after spending time learning at other schools (one of where he failed and was fired!!) and under Saban.

He would not have lasted long enough at UT to grow into the coach he is right now. You all would have been talking about firing him in season 3, 4 or 5.

I have no problem being patient. I haven't called for Heupel to be fired. I think it would be idiotic at this point, largely because of a) the buyout amount and b) he is a high floor coach who deserves at least 2 more season to be evaluated. That being said, what I take issue with are people who act like this program isn't a top tier job or it is sacrilegious to start to question some areas of Heupel's program.

I give Heupel a tremendous amount of credit and respect for building this back up so quickly. He is no doubt a good coach. However, I and many others are starting to see some concerning cracks in the foundation that if not quickly fixed could stall out his program.

lol..
It's a tread about the wisdom behind keeping Heupel.

I think most everyone sees the relevance in factoring in the past results of replacing coaches.

According to you the last good hire was Kiffin (18 years ago)?
A coach who bolted after one year leaving our program in total disarray.

Battle was replaced by a better coach, Majors was replaced by a better coach, Fulmer may have been replaced by a better coach but we will never know because he fled for USC after year 1, then we wondered in the desert for many years after that.

Kiffin didn't leave it in disarray. That is just revisionist history. There were a lot of power plays being made at the top of the UT power structure at that time that had much more to do with our coming years of disarray than Kiffin leaving being the cause.
