Herbstreit hot take on Tennessee - Lock down Heupel

I have no problem being patient. I haven't called for Heupel to be fired. I think it would be idiotic at this point, largely because of a) the buyout amount and b) he is a high floor coach who deserves at least 2 more season to be evaluated. That being said, what I take issue with are people who act like this program isn't a top tier job or it is sacrilegious to start to question some areas of Heupel's program.

I give Heupel a tremendous amount of credit and respect for building this back up so quickly. He is no doubt a good coach. However, I and many others are starting to see some concerning cracks in the foundation that if not quickly fixed could stall out his program.
Concerns are always fair to bring up and warranted. I don’t think any of us should glaze over clear deficiencies with our head in the sand.

I apologize if it sounded like I was saying you were implying that. I was just generalizing some of the thoughts I’ve seen on the board.

We are a top tier program I agree, but I do believe he is a top tier coach that has some growing to do still. Everything he has done here and where he has pulled us from to where we are should excuse and give time for all the small things to fix themselves.

Kiffin didn't leave it in disarray. That is just revisionist history. There were a lot of power plays being made at the top of the UT power structure at that time that had much more to do with our coming years of disarray than Kiffin leaving being the cause.
Talk about revisionist.....
He left 2 days before national signing day.....also a time when coaching moves had already been made for the year.
He most definitely and knowingly left our program in disarray

Yes, a top 10 recruiting class, left by Kiffin...is obviously disarray. Are you freaking kidding me? Come on, man.

# 12 on Rivals.
And talent is secondary when Dooley is your coach.
Come on man.
Complete disarray.........did you sleep from 2010-2021?

Herbstreit is correct on this one. He's not one of my favorites, Herbstreit just like all the other announcers when broadcasting our games, has a lovefest with whomever we are playing. I really don't care what he says. All I know is Keep Heupel, keep his staff , get rid of any player who doesn't want to be here and GO VOLS GO !!!!!!

Heupel would also have to continue winning 9-10 consistently for another 5 years while avoiding a championship to be considered in the same category as Richt and Franklin, IMO.
Even then, Franklin never could beat their biggest rivals at PSU. Heupel already has the same number of wins against Bama and Florida as Franklin had against Ohio State and Michigan in 11+ years. If we can beat Florida, he will surpass Franklin's win total in that regard.

We hired Pruitt because we didn’t actually conduct a search in the aftermath of the gettable good coaches. Stopping the Schiano hire was the right call. Just because they screwed up the hire after Schiano doesn’t mean it was wrong.
Great post and well said.

These days with the portal and all the movement of players, you want a former QB who won a National Championship as your coach making the decision and helping with the development of your #1 position player on the team.

Same thing with Fulmer. Just because we botched the next 15 years doesn’t mean we were wrong to move on from Fulmer.

Fulmer hiring cornbread led to Heupel. Heavy was playing chess!
I meant his firing as coach. Then again, maybe that was the plan all along. Fire him in 2008 to rehire him as AD years later so he could hire Pruitt to screw up so bad it led to Heupel. Genius!

That was his villian arc. His hero arc would have been hiring Kiffin who was the only coach worth a damn who was publicly lobbying for the job. Remember, Lane was doing tv hits talking about the job while Fulmer was down to Doeren, Mel Tucker, and Jeremy Pruitt loI

I'm sure there are fans though that said they would rather go thru the Pruitt years and penalties than to ever have him come back

A woman scorned…

A recruiting class that he had his assistants contacting during his meeting to inform the team he was leaving to try to talk them into not starting classes so that they could follow them to USC. Also the 2009 class quickly fell completely apart with guys being kicked off the team for legal issues, a few busts, no QB even being signed, etc.

Players commit to the coach, not the school. People hung up over a coach getting a job change unexpectedly and wants to bring the guys he has spent a season recruiting is not some big deal. My goodness. If shoe was on other foot and Tennessee was hiring someone who did that, no one would say a word.

I'm sure he will be re-evaluated closer to his contract deadline, January 2030. I'm not sure I can get on board with keeping him because we're in a better position. Doesn't there need to be continued growth? However, the "fire" Heupel crowd have lost their minds.

**Edit** I also want to see what he can do with "his" recruits, not someone else's. That could very well change things one way or the other.

I am all for keeping Heupel...it's just some changes to the Defensive side of the ball he needs to makes changes to. I am sure he doesn't want to fire anyone but maybe he'll get lucky and someone will hire this certain coordinator away or as there head coach.
