Tony Vitello to SF Giants (Confirmed)

Some of the Giants beat writers I’ve read on Twitter seem to be convinced Tony is just “doing his job” by going to practice and has agreed to be the manager, it’s just being held off on being announced.

That may be true, but it could also be a case of a “what college coach could possibly turn down an MLB job?” attitude.

All this brings up an interesting hypothetical question, and recency bias may play a roll in the answer...but, if one has to go, you are you keeping, Tony Vitello or Danny White?

I can see a scenario developing where this becomes an issue of the campus is only big enough for one of them. If boosters strong-arm Danny White into keeping Vitello at all costs against his recommendation of what he thinks is in the best interest of the athletic department as a whole, how long does Dr. Danny stick around believing he doesn't have the absolute authority he may have thought he had?

This is going to be extremely unpopular, but as I've said in another post, living through the chaos and negligence of the Dickey, Hamilton, Hart, and Fulmer years, I think it makes more sense long term to have a good AD.

Really good question. If you're talking about a Vitello-esque football coach, you have to go with the coach, as football stirs the drink at nearly all P5 schools.

The problem is that baseball just isn't a revenue-generating sport, even with Tony taking the program to unprecedented heights. This is going to be extremely unpopular, but as I've said in another post, living through the chaos and negligence of the Dickey, Hamilton, Hart, and Fulmer years, I think it makes more sense long term to have a good AD.

I understand this perspective, but I am not a fan of Tennessee because they generate revenue. The athletic department’s bottom line doesn’t impact my wallet. I am a fan of Tennessee because I love the university‘s student athletes and the program’s.

I saw a few people on Twitter put it this way, and I agree, which is that I have gotten more happiness and joy out of 7 years of Tennessee baseball than I have of 25 years of mostly mediocre football, the king of revenue. That’s why it’s important for me to keep winning in a non-revenue sport, because it brings me joy. I don’t reap the benefits of high profit margins.

I think that’s true when we talk about players, Nico, etc. but I don’t think it’s true when it comes to coaches… when the coach is THE guy who built the program to its current level of dominance. There are plenty of examples historically of programs thinking they were the chit, just to squabble in irrelevance for the next 20 years. I’m not saying the program becomes irrelevant without him, but our expectations of 50 win seasons will need to drop back down to reality.

I don’t think I’d go as far as to say DW had nothing to do with Tony leaving (if he does go). But I don’t think he would be THE reason.

Tony has the most talented roster he has ever had at Tennessee and likely be preseason # 1. If he leaves, I doubt it will be because support from the Athletic Department.
