Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

One more thing. Heupel has no confidence in our DC. Want to know how I know? Because he plays every end of half the same way. He is trying to take away remaining time on the clock so the other team can't go 75 yards in 1 minute to score. He has become predictable in his playcalling as a result. We run clock and then put our offense in terrible situations related to clock late in the half. Is causing us to lose points and last night became a 10–14-point swing. Look at our games this year.

- Against Arkansas we were conceding to halftime, then Bishop ripped one and put us at midfield. Obviously, we seemed unprepared for that and failed to convert.

- MSST. Stopped Bothwell at MSST 28-yard line with 1:01 left on the clock. Didn't take a timeout????? Clock runs to 14 seconds, and they punt.

- Bama. 2nd and 10 from Bama 27 with 1:30 left in the half. We hand off to Thomas for a gain of 1 yard. We then allow 40 seconds to run before the next play????? This was defensive play calling. We were scared of leaving them any time on the clock prior to halftime. If he had confidence in his DC, this would not happen.

To compound the issue, we hand it off to Bishop and he is tackled at the Bama 5-yard line. I'm screaming "Timeout!" Nope. We allow 12 seconds to run and then hand it off again. This put us in the predictable situation and the pick-6. If Tennessee needs a stat guy to handle timeouts, I will do it for free. Just put me through the headset.

I agree completely with this. He tries to walk the line and you’re right, it has burned us more often than not

My perspective, being at the stadium, it was horrible. There were no ref issues. We just were not good. From the first play to the last play, it was bad. Offense wasn’t good. Defense wasn’t good. And heupel was horrible.

I have nothing nice to say about that game.
Surprising take. How did we outgain them and be a 1-yd play from it being a final 3-pt game if we played so terribly? Seems to me if Joey doesn't have that catasrophic play, it's razor thin to the end and anyone's game.

I think a lot of people (myself included) are also just more annoyed with the loss than they would be if it didn’t come on the heels of the Vitello news. We all knew going into Tuscaloosa was an uphill battle and a likely loss. If yesterday is just a normal Saturday, they reaction to the loss probably isn’t quite as heated.
It’s the pick six from the worst play call I’ve ever seen. Hell running a FB dive and let that being your last play woulda been better

Tons of people have said to fire him
Quit being naive
No credit is given for those 3-4 plays that won us games either
Look across college football

Bama lost to FSU
Kirby lost to bama
Arky almost beat A&M
Texas smoked Oklahoma then nearly lost to UK
Ole miss almost lost to wash st then lost to georgia
Vandy beat LSU

College football has no dominant team anymore
No gimme wins
Players have to make plays
Please show me who said it. Literally asking because I haven’t seen anyone say that about Heupel. Some assistants yes, not Heupel.

Those people are dumb. That said, my issue with Heupel isn’t his coaching ability, it’s is his managerial skills. A solid college coach nowadays has to manage personnel, players, recruits, families, the clock, the in-game decisions, the refs, the media, etc. So far, he’s lacking in managing personnel and that’s showing up in these types of games. He’s gotta get away from the fear of firing people and just pull the trigger. This staff needs massive overhauls or else he’ll continue to struggle in the big games that matter.
Pick 6 and a missed fg were the struggles
Were not blowing out Alabama or Georgia
If we were undefeated people would still be bitching
His piss poor management skills got us in the playoffs last year, and have a great chance to get us in this year
Pick 6 and missed fg aren’t bad management skills
It’s bad execution

Now I do wish he was more cut throat but we keep winning somehow with his terrible coaching skills
Honestly we’re luck to be where we are with what happened this off season and the new players on offense
Defense just need more juice and speed

I’m not gonna waste my time ****ing with you being a delusional *******
Your the leader of the CJH sucks brigade and I understand that
Your the best ignore poster to join my list
Keep up the good fight
We’re better off not having you as a fan
Dont forget to email Danny white and post things on twitter

A bit silly.

Can we be frustrated but not also admit that you shouldn’t judge an entire defense / defensive philosophy over a true Fr - who wouldn’t be on the field with a healthy defensive backfield - not wrapping up a ball carrier?
Would have merit if #6, #2, basically every DB except #8 & #15 for two quarters are piss poor.

Folks talking ish about Huepel needs to relax.

Defense is a problem though. And they arent getting better.
They gave up 30 to Bama on the road. No one has kept them below 30 in Tuscaloosa so far.

And we held them to nearly a full yard less per play than anyone prior. Vandy's defense is dang good and even they gave up over 7 YPP.

Again, without 1-2 GAMECHANGING DBs being out. This just won't be our real defense until/if they play. Our entire scheme is changed, as our opposing offenses'. They wouldn't get away with half of their shiz is Jermod was out there.

Yall would fire me. I would've taken the 3pts and gone to half down just 6.
Woulda been better than a pick six. Being down two scores already you had to come away with points

Even if the pick is thrown if they don’t return it for a TD it’s a completely different second half. They go 3 and out and we score and it’s now 14-16

No they gave up 28. Joey gave them 9

Man...I get being aggressive, but also 16-10 going into the half would've felt a hell of a lot better than 23-7 considering how poorly we played the 1st half.

Pick 6 really was a back breaker...

Also the LOS was wild, Bama forced 4 sacks and 8 TFLs, we had 0 sacks and 4 TFLs on both sides of it we got outplayed. There were some bad calls, but I'm just looking at the things we had control over. Still not sure why on the road at Bama was the game they decide to changeup the OL and rotate them.

You would have kicked a FG...from the 1...with 9 seconds left?

I would have personally been behind firing any UT coach that was that wussified vs Bama. Dear god. Hindsight is 20/20, but this is complete nonsense and a roll-over mentality. I could never support that smh

How do we know the strategy hasn’t been dictated to banks by heup? Banks doesn’t have full autonomy.
Neither of us know that for sure, but I do know that CJH is involved with offensive playcalling and not defensive playcalling outside of perhaps nudging CTB when we have a multiple score lead late in the 4th (Arkansas). But here's the thing. I do not believe CJH is a micromanaging leader. I believe he does offer autonomy to his coaching staff to better prepare them for the next level.

I think our defense (outside of secondary) has tons of talent and are not playing to our potential. Why? Because of two main factors IMO.

1) Scheme. We have become predictable and are not evolving. We are running the same things we ran since 2023. Teams have caught on.

2) Personnel.

a) Here is the number of blue-chip DT's we've signed since 2021:
2026 = D Albert incoming
2025 = Campbell and Utley (True Fresh).
2024 = None.
2023 = Hobbs.
2022 = None (I consider West a DE).
2021 = None
This will not cut it in the SEC. I believe Chop and Garner have started to fix this. We cannot continue to recruit Edge, DE, and LBers, and convert them to DT's.

b) Here is the number of blue-chip Secondary players we've signed since 2021.
2026 = Z Anderson incoming
2025 = Poteat?
2024 = Boo (nickle), Beasley (safety)
2023 = Matthews? (Gipson a 3 star but need him to play)
2022 = None
2021 = None
This will not cut it in the SEC.

Looking further, we didn't recruit well at LB either until we got Inge. Inge is fixing this issue.

2026 = Rouse and White incoming
2025 = Gass, Perlotte, Harmon
2024 = Spillman
2023 - A. Carter (and he plays like it)
2022 = None
2021 = Willis?

Are we going to sign 2 portal DT's (I'm okay with that) and 5+ portal secondary players for next year? I feel great about all offensive positions for next year with both quality and depth. I feel good about the DE and LB positions. I feel good about special teams. I believe Chop and Inge have started to fix the issues in the front 7. But Martinez and Banks are not getting it done with talent nor scheme.

C'mon Moco, going for a play (if not 2) with 9 seconds left is not being aggressive 😅🤣 0% of coaches would tell their team to line up for a FG...talk about losing the entire room. Woof.

Y'all wanted Butch to go for it with 3 seconds left vs OU...but kick @bama with 9 seconds left?? I don't believe it lol

Literally every drive the first 4 drives was a different lineup. Notice how the scoring drive in first half and the pick six was the lineup we kept the rest of game and the oline looked wayyyy better

I mean is there anything you’ve watched the past 3 games that shows you he has what it takes to win in Gainesville? Hell, in my book the Kentucky game is now 50/50. The only reason I think we pull that off is because they’re still Kentucky and will find a way to screw up in the end.
We should be able to pass all over them. But they will run it down our throats, and our DBs will fold.
