Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

That one hurts and I get the frustrations. I get the questions and the questioning too. I won't try and keep anyone from venting or getting theirs out these next few days, but i may not be around much for it. Only because it isn't the healthiest engagement for me. I will pray no one hurts any toes kicking light bulb buckets. We'll need you full strength for the next one.

I agree, HOWEVER I can also see us screwing the pooch against UK this weekend and then losing to (in order of most realistic loss):
UF
OU
Vandy

I personally think we go 9-3 with a loss to UF in Gainesville to their interim coach.
4-11 against UGA, UF, and Bama since 2021 would be rough. Butch was 3-12 in his five seasons. Heup is a much better coach but that would be a damning statistic. Those are the games you’re judged on here. Hopefully he takes full advantage of not facing UGA and UF next year.

How we feeling? I missed the game entirely. Didn't have a good feeling about it anyway, but from the stats it looks like we outgained them, but struggled to push the ball through the air.

The 99 yd interception is clearly the difference of the entire game. Sucks bc the scoreboard makes it look a lot worse.

I mean is there anything you’ve watched the past 3 games that shows you he has what it takes to win in Gainesville? Hell, in my book the Kentucky game is now 50/50. The only reason I think we pull that off is because they’re still Kentucky and will find a way to screw up in the end.

I was wondering that too. We didn’t have the same ol combo for consecutive drives last night, absolutely stupid to do that. Our best OL combo last night was:

LT: heard
LG: moe
C: pendleton
Rg: Perry
RT: Sanders

Thats what it needs to be from here on out and needs to stay like that
We do lot of stupid high school things like the fake injuries on XPs and the OL subbing. NOBODY ELSE does that. We swap and shuffle guys around like it’s a basketball lineup and it’s no wonder we have a false start every possession.

That is really stupid coaching.

Yes they do. One team loses every single game. Alabama is tough to beat in Tuscaloosa and we made too many mistakes. This team just has a razor thin margin this year and our defense is really weak in the back end. If Heupel gets this team to 10-2 it will be a miraculous coaching job. I will hope for the best and cheer them all the way. SEC football is harder than it’s ever been.
Why is it always the players and personnel?

Isn’t it the coaches job to get the right players and portal for needs?

I get tired of always it’s players faults. This game didn’t scream a player issue. It was a lack of effort on some plays and stupid play calls.

You don’t throw at the end of the half from the one. At worst you kick a field goal or miss a run in. And it’s a one score game.

We went man for a few series and got some stops. Then switched back to zone and got killed. Why switch? We could have had a three and out to start the game and a long third down and we went to Banks third and done and it was automatic.

I’m interested to see how Joey’s neck is in a few days and if we see Merk for a good bit of that UK game.

I think Joey is hurt more than we think. He wasn’t 100% since the shoulder tackle. If he is out or hurt enough for Merk to play, we’re screwed.

Ultimately got to give credit, their DL won its matchups, frequently. The last drive of the game, was really deflating. The OL cant always have a hone crowd. It won its matchups too.

Not sure what changed within the 20 yard line. Would've like to be more creative around the run game there.

Bama's LBers and DB's are also as good of athletes as our guys.!
DL won because we basically told them when we’re hiking the ball. It’s been an issue for five years. We either have a guard tap the center every play or last night Pendleton would motion his arm out and then hike the ball. They could rush immediately and teed off on it all night. Makes it a big advantage for the other team.

Exactly what Ollie said. Find your best 5 and stay with it.

Another ridiculous and obviously stupid thing we do. High school level. Pendleton does a slow methodical 2 second movement before every snap that even casual fans can pick up on.

I’m really losing a lot of confidence in this staff because of things like this.

That killed me. I also cannot stand the stubbornness of doing that super quick zone play after we have a chunk play on O. We either false start or get TFL. We cannot get out of our own way it seems.

Another one is continually rotating the OL and it bites us.

Post sleep observations.

The game was not as bad as the score. We moved the ball with relative ease against their defense. Like every game this year our defense made immediate adjustments out of halftime, and then once the offense figured it out, we never adjusted back. Here are my biggest problems with our team:

Blitz? - We show our cards way too early. Then never adjust out of it after QB audibles. Every game I watch our blitzing defenders look to the sidelines like "Are we still doing this?" Then we do, it gets picked up and we get gashed. If you're going to fake blitz from the middle of the field, can we at least have one LBer pick up the TE? What happened to our delayed blitzes? Boo and McMurray can cause havoc with them, yet we have gotten away from it.

Red Zone Defending - When teams get in our 20, they score TD's almost every time. This should be nearly impossible considering you have less field to defend. But somehow, we do not use the back of the endzone or sideline like another defender. Ultimately, when you are poor with red zone defense, it typically means you do not have the DT's. We don't. We have converted ends playing DT. If I could have two players back from last year, it would be Omar Norman-Lott and Elijah Simmons.

Red Zone Offense - If we cannot pass when inside the 10, we better start running wildcat. For God's sake, can we develop a hard count? We are giving away too many possessions with our predictable snap. Alabama two sacks came on gamble rushes. He would've been offside if we changed our cadence.

DB's - I watch our rivals, and they have quality depth in the secondary. They get coverage sacks. We don't. We either beat the guy in front of us with a clear path to the QB or hope for errant throws. This will not win games against competent QBs.

WR - Why do have zero depth in year 5? Greg was right with one thing last night, our WR's were gassed. The second half drops come from a lack of concentration and that happens when guys are tired.

After seven weeks, Ole Miss, Alabama, UGA, Texas A&M, Vandy, Oklahoma, Mizzou, and possibly Texas will all be ranked higher than us.

playoff dreams are dead this year.

Hopefully we get a good bowl match up against a mid Big Ten and can end the year with a win.

Heupel has to make changes if he wants to get us to the next level. He isn’t winning a Championship with Hazle and Banks.

I know we don’t have the right coaches at many spots because no one wants them. We have rumors all the time in basketball and baseball for assistants leaving for jobs. Other universities want our basketball and baseball coaches and we have to fight to keep many. And many go to take head coaching jobs.

No one is coming for Hazle, Banks, Willie, Albein, etc. We have to upgrade and stop with the friend network and not making changes. We are looking worse and worse each game which is frightening.

Bishop is my favorite player now.

I haven’t seen such heart and desire to win from a player on this team all year. He ran with fire and true will.

He has my full respect and I hope he continues to ball out.
He’s becoming one of my favourite Vols ever. He epitomizes, “…give my all for Tennessee…”.

Can Tony V take Banks with him to San Fran?

We are just a middle of the pack to lower half of the conference team this year. Is what it is. Accept it, adjust expectations and look forward to a decent bowl game this year.

Before the season I said I would be content with 9-3. I need to be consistent with that. I didn’t expect to win yesterday but I thought the score would be closer. After touching grass and the emotions subsiding. We are right where I thought we would be and with some good breaks 9-3 is still achievable.
