Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

I really do like this team. Not elite given the injuries, but they play hard.
Yes they do. One team loses every single game. Alabama is tough to beat in Tuscaloosa and we made too many mistakes. This team just has a razor thin margin this year and our defense is really weak in the back end. If Heupel gets this team to 10-2 it will be a miraculous coaching job. I will hope for the best and cheer them all the way. SEC football is harder than it’s ever been.

Heupel will be judged against what he does against the big 3. Fair or not, he has to beat this Florida team to make this season a positive. 9-3 will look pretty good but gotta beat a hated rival. We got many rivals, but Georgia, Bama, and Florida are all that matter.

UGA has lost only 6 games since 2021. Four of those were to Bama. Bama 11 losses since 2021.

While I agree those are the games to judge by, both are very hard to beat. Should have had UGA this year. We have to make that kick.

Doesn’t excuse last night though. That was a total **** show with shades of the dark era.

Ya just don't like to see so many boneheaded plays in year 5.

Folks talking ish about Huepel needs to relax.

Defense is a problem though. And they arent getting better.

Crazy how one play can completely change the game. Tennessee had about 10 of them tonight

We made way too many self inflicted mistakes to win last night. We didn’t lose because of talent IMO. Every time we gained momentum, we shot ourselves in the foot. Dropped passes, penalties which lead to a safety, bad snap which killed our comeback, the pick six before half, bad tackling etc

My perspective, being at the stadium, it was horrible. There were no ref issues. We just were not good. From the first play to the last play, it was bad. Offense wasn’t good. Defense wasn’t good. And heupel was horrible.

I have nothing nice to say about that game.
Not sure how you can watch that game anywhere in the world and not see officiating issues. Every close spot for us was short and had to be reviewed. That’s not an exaggeration. Doesn’t even include several awful penalties on us.

Anyone else feel that Heup = Mark Richt?

Hear me out.

Super good dude.
Players love him.
Player families love him.
Floor is typically 8 wins.
But ceiling is pretty much 10-2 and a couple of decent wins here and there but you never play for anything significant (SECCG, Natty).

And maybe after our decade+ of dysfunction, that’s okay.

But maybe it’s not…?

IDK. The new 9 game SEC schedule complicates this math. And I’ve been drinking like most of us still on here at this hour…

Go Vols

**Edit… I’ll always love Heup for taking the job when nobody else would. And he made us relevant again. So I don’t discredit that. But my notes above still have my thoughts turning. Go Vols.
Maybe, dont care. Just win.

Officiating was bad.

Penalties were bad.

Play calling was bad.

Execution was bad.

Tackling was bad.

Coaching was bad.

Players were bad.

Announcers were bad.

Not a lot of good to talk about. We didn’t look ready to play. Our game plan was not tbe right one. Didn’t. Really try to run the ball until the second bad. We let the environment get the best of us. We don’t overcome adversity.

Bad day. Erase it now and move on.

Agreed, we didn’t lose because of talent. I just think judging Heup solely on the Bama/UGA games, with what he inherited, is unfair to him.
Yeah, they’re the benchmark, and where we need to be at to contend for titles, but we’ve got to stick it out with Heupel. Got to get to junior seasons of Faizon, Keys, DGG(hopefully) etc.

It was a different era, but it took Johnny Majors a decade+ to right the ship here. Replacing Heup would be the absolute worst thing for this program right now.

Tennessee is used to picking up chunk yards. Bama was forcing us to take long drives, and once to the red zone was a steel curtain. That last drive was pitiful, we couldnt get in.

Gotta figure out a way to punch ball in. OL dominated AT TIMES last night, why not run ball into the end zone?

Yes, officiating is a massive massive problem. There were times on both sides, that absolute bottom of my shoes turds were and were NOT called on us and Bama. But its that way in every game.

Issue I have in this conference is that only thing consistent game to game is thar every down, nearly every series there will be two maybe three just head scratching calls or no calls. Yes it seems like a lot of them effect Tennessee.

The issues on defense are ones that are inexcusable.

We technically are there, with UGA

Does anyone else think that Banks might be disappointed that he didn't get a head coaching job the last couple off-seasons? And now he's just going through the motions coaching and calling the defense. I mean I don't know what it is, but in my opinion there's seems to be something off about the defense other than injuries or how you may think how talented or not talented a position group is.

I'm all in on Huep. Period, end of story. And it doesnt even have to be up for debate.

If he chooses to make changes at years end. I will absolutely understand. The current state of defense, specifically the secondary is not good.

(Flush sound)

It's Bama, on the road.

We are basically as good as peak Majors already. Just not equal footing talent wise.

Losing games like this and being grotesquely upset in other games is a Tennessee tradition going back to Neyland.

We certainly have some glaring issues on defense. We also make a lot of mistakes on both sides of the ball. Team is just not very disciplined. The margins are just razor thin in the SEC. Anyone wanting to get rid of Heupel is a moron or a teenager mentally. Were are all these super coaches hiding that all these teams firing their coaches are going to find. Penn State paying $50 million to fire a proven coach who had you in the playoffs last year is beyond crazy. If you’re consistently in the conversation to make the playoffs you should stay the course and keep grinding. We really, really miss our corners.
