Tony Vitello to SF Giants (Merged )

What you call the "most laborious and tedious part of his job" is also potentially the most rewarding and controllable part of what makes his job at Tennesee better than any professional job.

As a professional manager, roster management and construction is largely out of his hands. Development is largely out of his hands. I agree that the stress and frustration that accompanies those tasks fall to the wayside, but it just feels like trading one set of troubles for another. I also don't get the sense that Vitello hates recruiting. In fact, I think he enjoys it.

At the end of the day, he can write his own story at Tennessee and he's the star of the show. At the MLB level, at best, he gets to pick the font and ink color, but the story is largely written by the GM, the club president, and the owner. Managers are extremely replaceable and oftentimes the scapegoat for the decisions they have little to no control over. I guess if he decides to give it a try, he will maybe find that out the hard way.
Exactly! 💯

Meh ..... If he stays, this will be forgotten.
I agree.. Anyone one of us would most certainly entertain the notion of moving to the very top job of their profession. I would be very disappointed if he leaves but in no way could I hold it against him. It's not just a money thing it's prestige and validation for your dedication and hard work. GBO 🍊 💥

Right. That could be said for any successful college coach. Theres always the potential they may take a bigger job. It’s the double edged sword of success. People are always trying to snipe your coaches or their staff.
Agree. It’s the ultimate compliment to the program Tony built. Sports are so cyclical. If we never again reach the levels he has sustained it will hurt, but it will make the ride of the last 7 years even more special. I’ll only be disappointed that it ended so quickly and so unexpectedly. Time to log off and touch some grass for a while before watching the Vols beat Bama.

This. Right. Here. 💯. 👍🍊🍊👊👊😀😀🍊👍👍

If Tony V leaves for the MLB, he will be fired within 36 months. There are far too many reasons why MLB franchises do not hire college coaches.

I love Tony V and he is a generational college baseball coach but his stuff won’t work in the MLB.
100% accurate. He will get fired then take over Arkansas lmao. Nightmare scenario.

Wonder if this is why he’s mulling it over. Nothing says swag quite like a mlb team offering you a manager spot and you tell them to kick rocks to stay where you’ve built.
I bet speaking to the team and staff he’s assembled today after the scrimmage helped create more uncertainty about taking the Giants job.

I just don’t see him fitting in as a MLB manager and I could be wrong. Admittedly, there’s major bias in that comment but Vitello is a bro. He likes to goof around, have a few beers and talk a little trash. He resonates much better with college aged players.

That's hard. It's kinda like bragging about how you dated that crazy beautiful woman but now she's with another guy. Just seems...well... pitiful.

Silver lining is that it’s a MLB job. I’d feel much worse if he left for another SEC school. It’s not a knock on the program if he leaves for the MLB, but the next hiring decision is likely the most important one for Tennessee baseball that I can remember.

I think this is very true, having to look everyone in the eye and asking yourself, am I sure I really want to go? As the day has worn on, I just hate how this has all happened. Hasn’t been handled well at all. I guess I can see his POV on opportunity now, but doesn’t mean I have to like it.

That misery will come when he ends up at Arkansas after he's fired by MLB. Heavy dose of salt in a gaping flesh wound.
