His Toronto experience prevents him from doing stuff like that, IMO. He was a much different kind of GM up there. Remember all the big names he either dealt or acquired? Vernon Wells, Colby Rasmus, Jose Reyes (twice), Mark Buehrle, Josh Johnson, R.A. Dickey, Brett Lawrie, Josh Donaldson, Tulo, David Price. Almost all of those deals the "obvious," big name trade where his team acquired the established MLB player that had the obvious role (e.g., they needed pitching, so go get the best pitcher available on the trade block in David Price, you need a bat, so go get Tulo).Agreed. And the thing is, he would so much more praise if he just went for it and stopped trying to be the smartest guy in the room. Trying to be the smartest guy in the room is what caused us to lose Freeman for roughly the exact same contract that you ended up offering to Olson. It's what caused AA to think he pulled a slick one with getting Arcia for cheap and then not developing a back up plan at SS when he knew Arrcia had been super mediocre to bad for most of his career. It is what forced the Contreras/Murphy deal where we traded away a better, younger, and cheaper catcher. And trying to be the smartest guy in the room is how you end up signing everyone to a long term extension at the same time and end up in luxury tax hell and you can't make the necessary moves to improve your club.
AJ Preller is not what I call a very smart GM. But by God, he isn't afraid to make the moves he thinks can get his team over the edge. And I gotta respect him for that. Sort of a controlled chaos. AA needs to take notes, because he is about to be out of a job if we have to endure another season of this. And trying to be smarter than everyone else isn't how you're gonna drastically improve this club.
Every team has a window. And the goal should be building the best possible team during that window. Our window is for however long Acuna is here and/or playing like a top 5 player. His Toronto experience prevents him from doing stuff like that, IMO. He was a much different kind of GM up there. Overall those deals had something of a mixed record, and never got Toronto over the top, and it's like he's vowed never to do those kinds of deals again. Again, being scarred from those deals is still no excuse for not moving Ozuna. There's just no possible justification for that. It's like having a huge pile of stinking trash in your kitchen and somehow coming up with a rationale that you won't take it out until tomorrow morning. Even if the trash can is full outside or it is pouring rain, there's just no possible justification for it to stay there.
Not super hard in today's league to be top 8.. There are about 4 QBs I would say are definitely above every one else. Those 4 QBs are Mahomes, Allen, Lamar, and Burrow. You can mix and match the next 10 or so QBs any way you like. The only two people who think Goff is a top 8 QB are in this thread. How lucky are we??

Much like Rodgers, if he wasn't a bazillion years old, he would rank a lot higher. The career is definitely better than 90% of the guys on the list. But the production just isn't there anymore.and if mahomes gets to sit atop the list for “somehow finding a way to win” then leaving Stafford off entirely is pretty silly
I don't know if choosing Olson over Freddie helped us be one of the best teams in this window.Every team has a window. And the goal should be building the best possible team during that window. Our window is for however long Acuna is here and/or playing like a top 5 player.
As questionable of moves as they were, choosing Freeman over Olson and choosing Murphy over Contreras were still moves that have helped us be one of the best teams in this window. But the moves since the start of 2023 have been mostly hot garbage.
He was a lot closer to beating the eagles in Philly than mahomes was indoors
Maybe on a career achievement list but talking about modern day Stafford and Aaron Rodgers in the same breath is slanderous!

Aaron Rodgers is dog **** brother lolStafford is still a good QB, but production wise he has fallen off quite a bit. He's 40, so no shame in that.
I feel like Rodgers will have a bounce back year now that he isn't playing for a **** franchise with a terrible coaching staff. Honestly Rodgers didn't even have a horrible season stats wise last year.
