World’s largest battery-powered ship launches from Australia

The world’s largest battery-powered ship launched this week in Australia.

Hundreds gathered Friday at the Incat Tasmania shipyard in Hobart to watch the launch of the Incat Hull 096, which officials boasted represents a “giant leap forward in sustainable shipping” and is its “most important” project to date.

The Hull 096 can carry up to 2,100 passengers.

The Tasmania-based company built the ship for South American ferry operator Buquebus, which will run the vessel between the Argentinian capital, Buenos Aires, and Uruguay. The cost of the vessel was not made public.

The Hull 096 can carry up to 2,100 passengers and hold 225 vehicles, and operates entirely on battery-electric power.

Eight electric-driven water jets propel the 426-foot-long Hull 096, which is also the world’s largest electric vehicle.

The ship is equipped with more than 551,156 pounds of batteries and an energy storage system with more than 40 megawatt-hours.

1/2 a billion pounds of cargo loss on each voyage. Just don’t see how that can possibly be profitable

And if I read it correctly, the energy capacity is equivalent to 1000 gallons of diesel or about 7000 pounds. Even when you add the weight of the diesel generators that’s a lot of extra hull to push through the wster

Yep. Until hydrogen becomes mainstream as a fuel dead dinosaurs still rule the roost on energy density. That vessel appears destined to be a local shuttle only. And I’d guess the company won’t be building a blue water battery powered vessel soon for the reason ham sammich pointed out even though he can’t do math.

I also wonder the details of the charging system, how long does the ship have to remain in port?

This absolutely makes sense to me. The cybertruck is quite possibly the ugliest vehicle ever produced and I don’t understand why anybody would want it. That’s without considering the price tag, shorter range than promised, and the litany of problems it’s had since launch. Other than this model the Tesla cars are cream of the crop of EV’s I’d say. This monstrosity? Not so much.

Sea water and battery powered ship. What could possibly go wrong?

The range is never really an issue. Agreed on the price tag. My model y is probably half the cost of a cybertruck. I couldn’t personally justify that kind of cost. Although many do pay close to that for non electric trucks

Great video. The ending is shocking. Dont want to spoil it for anyone. Teslas have always been ridiculously fast in a straight line...supercar fast. "Leave your Ferrari in the dust, with 2 kids and 6 bags of groceries" fast from stoplight to stoplight. Now they are track weapons too. Put down faster lap times at Willow Springs than a 458 Ferrari, Civic Type R (fastest fwd car ever made on track), brand new Nissan Z, Toyota Supra etc. On crap tires that gave up halway thru the lap. Heres a screenshot of the alltime leader board, as its only a quick glance in the video:

The Hagerty videos with Jason Cammisa are always excellent on youtube. Along with Throttle House, these are the best car videos made IMO. Amazing technology, proven race car drivers, great editing and production.

No

No electrics in this video, but its well done and involves cars that most people can actually afford if they want one. $35,000 cap. Lots of good cars in this one. Personally, I would rather have the 2024 GTI (no more manuals for 25) or the Toyota GR86...but the fastest by far is the 4cyl Ecoboost Mustang. Zero to 60 in 4.5seconds?!? In a 4banger Mustang?? 10 years ago you needed $100,000 for a Porsche 911 to run 4.5secs 0-60. Now you can do it in the cheapest Mustang money can buy for $35k. Thats insane. None of these cars took 6 seconds to reach 60mph IIRC. Thats also insane .

Republicans Set To Block California’s ‘Radical’ Gas Car Ban

One Democrat joined with 50 Republicans.

On Thursday, the GOP-led Senate voted to overturn a Biden administration move that powered California’s green energy agenda for cars and trucks that 11 other states have sought to adopt.

Fifty Republicans and one Democrat banded together to revoke the Clean Air Act waiver the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) granted in December to the Golden State that allowed it to proceed with a plan to ban the sale of new gas-powered light-duty vehicles by 2035.

Because the Republican-controlled House already passed the resolution of disapproval, the measure now heads to President Donald Trump. California has signaled that it is prepared to file a legal challenge.

“When I’m president, no state in America will be permitted to ban gas-powered cars or trucks, and I guarantee it,” Trump said.

And here’s the really interesting thing most people overlook. Diesel engines CAN run on plant derived oils and thus don’t have to rely on fossil fuels. The first engines developed by Rudolf Diesel actually ran on peanut oil. So diesel can actually be considered a renewable fuel. And when used as such, it is a net zero CO2 source as every carbon atom in the exhaust is a carbon atom removed FROM the atmosphere by the plants used to produce the fuel in the first place.

Imagine if it got caught in a storm and ran out of battery charge. A regular ship, you would pass over a hose and refuel. An electric ship, would you need like a 3000 mile long recharging cable back to shore? 😂
It just occurred to me, that we have electric powered ships running around all over the ocean. Here is an example:

USS Ronald Reagan. Nuclear powered.
