Electric Vehicles

$1k tax done at purchase sucks for those buying new evs. It's also wildly different than what ICE cars pay. A decent percentage of these cars wont be around in 10 years due to problems, wrecks, etc. Strange to have half the cars on the road paying tax on a per use basis while the other half is paying some guesstimate upfront cost that may or not be even remotely close to the car's usage of public roads.
I agree that the EV tax should be on consumption. However, there is the logistical issue of measuring the power dispensed to EV's. Given the fact that the last administration spent something like $8 billion trying to build a handful of EV power stations, it's more cost effective (and certainly better for up-front government cash flow) to charge $1k at time of purchase than to retrofit all EV chargers to measure (and collect) the tax. The big thing that I don't like about the up-front tax at purchase is that it gives a free pass to current EV owners.

Guaranteed these "celebrities" touted their concern for the environment by buying a Tesla and posted it all over their social media at the time.

What happened?
Mileage expected, reliability, safety, comfort, and the need for frequent maintenance have all improved.
Admittedly there are many features on modern cars that are overkill for me. But cars are getting better as they get more expensive and more complicated

Tesla Accused of Speeding Up Odometers so they fall out of warranty faster: Lawsuit

Tesla faces a proposed class action claiming it speeds up odometers on its electric vehicles so they fall out of warranty faster, saving Elon Musk’s company from having to pay for repairs.

The plaintiff Nyree Hinton alleged that Tesla odometer readings reflect energy consumption, driver behavior and “predictive algorithms” rather than actual mileage driven.

He said the odometer on the 2020 Model Y he bought in December 2022 with 36,772 miles on the clock ran at least 15% fast, based on his other vehicles and driving history, and for a while said he drove 72 miles a day when at most he drove 20.

Hinton, a Los Angeles resident, said this caused his 50,000-mile basic warranty to expire well ahead of schedule, leaving him with a $10,000 suspension repair bill that he thought Tesla should cover.

Hinton is seeking compensatory and punitive damages for Tesla drivers in California, potentially encompassing more than 1 million vehicles, court papers show.

I call BS..just another loon

seems reasonable. its relying on chips and computers rather than anything mechanical to track. another thing that can break, be corrupted/hacked. the more complicated a system the more likely it is to fail. funny how the complaints about too much tech in vehicles go away as soon as golden boy is brought into it.

I wouldn't be shocked if this got settled out of court. Then a quiet tech update got added that fixed a computer "glitch" that was affecting odometers.

Based on how gross the stated odometer error is this is a simple thing to test. Grab any handheld GPS and just drive a hundred miles around town, on highway and with differing driving styles and just compare the two readings. The speculation seems to be Tesla might be weighting hard driving/engine load as a factor to increase mileage by. But again it’s easy to test.

agreed. its an easy thing to prove/disprove, people should just let it work out. instead of immediately jumping on the issue to make it political.

Volkswagen lies about the performance of their diesel engines, no one bats an eye.
Ford issues a recall on their driveshafts, no one bats an eye.
Honda issues a recall on airbag deployment, no one bats an eye.
Tesla is accused of a software glitch, and suddenly its a political hack job, and to be doubted.

so it says he thinks 20k and vehicle says 50k but the suspension is "worn out" at 20k ... was this guy rock climbing with it or something? My car with almost 400k is on its third set of renewed suspension parts and they probably cost less that 500 bucks

If he is correct, the range of a Tesla is overstated..

Still think it is a hack job..with Musk and Tesla and political high profile, 10M cars on road for past 20 years yet just discovered..

World’s largest battery-powered ship launches from Australia

The world’s largest battery-powered ship launched this week in Australia.

Hundreds gathered Friday at the Incat Tasmania shipyard in Hobart to watch the launch of the Incat Hull 096, which officials boasted represents a “giant leap forward in sustainable shipping” and is its “most important” project to date.

The Hull 096 can carry up to 2,100 passengers.

The Tasmania-based company built the ship for South American ferry operator Buquebus, which will run the vessel between the Argentinian capital, Buenos Aires, and Uruguay. The cost of the vessel was not made public.

The Hull 096 can carry up to 2,100 passengers and hold 225 vehicles, and operates entirely on battery-electric power.

Eight electric-driven water jets propel the 426-foot-long Hull 096, which is also the world’s largest electric vehicle.

The ship is equipped with more than 551,156 pounds of batteries and an energy storage system with more than 40 megawatt-hours.

I wonder how many diesel generators they have onboard to charge it?

What kind of environmental disaster will it be if it sinks? Oil floats to the top to recover.
