LNS: Is the Hornet’s Nest Gone?

LOL. Yea, it happened. On the other hand, there were several on here that were very grateful and sent me some very kind "thank yous".
Two of the seats were right next to my brother and nephew. One game those seats were occupied by, what he described as, two very nice people from Vol Nation. The other game he sat next to two LSU fans. LOL

I had fun buying the tickets. I got drunk and went on a mission. When the purchases hit $8000, my wife got the security call from the bank wanting to know if it was really us making all the purchases. LOL. I got the scream from the other side of the house. " TxBo, WTF are you doing!"

Sadly, LOL, that's not the dumbest thing I've done during a season. That came in 2022.

Ok, now we need to know the self-proclaimed dumbest thing….

In 2022, I was drinking Old Style beer during every game while we were on a long win streak. I ran out of it after the Friday night Vandy victory. Old Style is not available in Texas. The closest place I could verify that it was available was Chicago and Wisconsin. So on Saturday morning I sent one of the company planes to Madison, WI to pick up enough Old Style to get through the season. They were back in plenty of time to ice it down for game 2. I truly did my all for Tennessee that day. We swept the series.

Haha! That’s one of the smartest things in my book! Well done!

That year at the Wright state game I think you may have been sitting near us. I seem to recall you saying after the game that some fans were complaining about a kid who was trying to get the crowd to cheer when we were losing. Well, we were right near a kid (probably UT student) who spent the whole game in the aisle leading the crowd in the V-O-L-S cheer and some people started yelling at him to shut up. We were pretty close to first base.

I told the pilots they needed to make an emergency run to WI. When my partner heard about it, he called me to see if everything was ok. When he found out the emergency was a modern day Smokey and the Bandit run, I thought he was going to die laughing.

No, that wasn't me. Last BaseVol game I saw in person Allen Cockrell was on the team.

In 2021, I got pissed because long time members here were not able to get/afford tickets to the super regional games. I went online and bought almost $10k worth of tickets just to give away. About half of the tickets I gave away on here were sold. One member here, forgetting where he got his MVP seats, came on here later bragging how he sold his MVP seats for a huge profit and stood in line for standing room only seats.
That’s funny. I have a very similar memory, but the inverse of that. Jk… it wasn’t me…

Txbo just casually noting that he has a company plane at his beck and call….at least you put it to good use!

What a flex 😛

225$ face value for a single behind home plate, 145$ all the way down right field face value. And someone has entire rows of however many seats are in a row for sale, UT has to fix this. For 225$ I can spend 2 nights at the beach. View attachment 740743
What if I told you that these likely aren’t individual resellers but Ticketmaster themselves in conjunction with UT holding back blocks of tickets to sell at reseller prices?

Then what you say wouldn’t be entirely true. I got 2 tickets in right field for A&M. The person was there and told me the whole row was theirs.

I 100% agree that this is what’s happening. There’s numerous “standard admission” tickets that is well above market reseller pricing.

Has the former Hornet’s Nest Lost Its Stinger?
Has LNS lost its fastball?
Are the fans spoiled by this 12-6 top 10 team and the past success?
Has the “wine/whine and cheese” crowd taken over?
Has moving the student section into RF hurt the buzz?
Are fan expectations too high?

I’ll hang up and listen….

After tonight, I can conclusively say that LNS is no longer a Hornet’s Nest. Other than A&M, I’ve been to every home SEC series and probably 70% of the non conference games, so this isn’t a knee jerk reaction. I’m hoping it’s due to being a transitional year both on the field and in the stadium, but it’s not the same intimidating, loud, home field advantage of 21, 22, 23, and 24. LNS has lost its stinger. The crowd simply isn’t what it used to be. Perhaps it will come back…

Granted LNS is a construction zone and the team replaced 7 position player starters, the entire starting rotation, and most of our stud relievers. I think the expectations were way too high for the 2025 team. As CTV has said, this team was never the #1 in the country. They are a good team but not elite (and that’s okay—it’s impossible to be elite every year). I expect them to win a Regional and get to a Super. I will be cheering for them to make it to Omaha but admit that is unlikely. I hope they prove me wrong…

With that said, I‘m hoping a completed stadium, no more cranes or hard hat areas will give the stadium a new buzz in 26. Not the least of which is to give the students some actual seats and show them some appreciation by doing some promotions for them. GBO.

Met Cockrell at Hoover a few years'when he was honored as an SEC baseball 'legend'. Also saw him play QB for the Vols a few times, including the 1982 wind over Bama in Neyland. Great memories!
How many baseball players have we had who played football at Tennessee? Holloway, Cockrell, Helton come to mind.

I think there’s a couple factors at play here.

First off, the heyday of the hornet’s nest came under very unique circumstances. That was right after Covid, when people hadn’t been able to attend sporting events for a while or maybe even leave the house much. We were suddenly having our first success in baseball in forever and also the football team happened to be terrible. Also, those teams had a massive chip on their shoulder and the crowd fed off that and had an edge.

There are also aspects that are exaggerated. For example, the Wright state game was really quiet for a long time until the team/crowd emerged in the 9th. Those teams were also prone to very dramatic moments that crowds can feed off.

Fast forward to today and we’re fresh off a national championship. I think that leads to two types of fans. Type 1: when we lose, they say, meh, we just won a title, life is good! Type 2: we should be a top contender every year now and losses are unacceptable.

Everything changes with success, but I’ll of course take it!

No mention of Holloway or Cockrell though. Sooooo…

If it can’t be confirmed on the interwebz… 🤣🤣🤣😉🤙🏼

I know General Neyland played both football and baseball at Texas A&M. When he transferred to West Point he played football, baseball, and boxed. He sometimes wore a Tennessee baseball shirt on campus to show support.
