Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Because it's only ever old white dudes that try claim Bird is the Goat. Wonder why that is?

And this is coming from an old(ish) white dude.
If we are honest, Larry Bird being white is a strike against him. He is not the prototypical modern basketball player. I really think that many are biased against him because he is white and doesn't fit the mold. Same way there were so many who hated that little white girl from Iowa.
Most of those passing definitive judgement on Bird have probably never seen him play. The NBA has a completely different fanbase now than it did in the 70's and 80's, most NBA fans today see MJ as the old days and consider anything before inferior. It is very typical, particularly today for those into lazy arguments to merely on appearance attach an identity and pass judgement. It is a lot easier to hate someone when you know nothing about them.

Not in their case. The Pirates org literally has 3 times the analytics staff of any other team. The problem is they trample over the top of each other. The media in Pitt writes about when BP takes place, there are dozens of them walking around with tablets. They could cut that staff in half and have some money to spend on people that can actually hit instead of theoretical hit. They need some actual baseball people in their ops, not MBAs.
I don't know exactly how they split up their staff but they should do whatever team should be doing. The examples that they should follow are the Astros, Braves, Rays and Dodgers. It is not a coincidence that three of those teams are considered to have the top 3 analytic departments in baseball. Carry as little salary as you can while you draft, and acquire talent. sign guys with good metrics that you can develop( have a hitting and pitching lab)call everyone up at the same time so you have organizational control for a few years. Sign them to extra years so it will be financially viable to the organization. Players when you first call them up bc it will be a few years until they can be a free agent.

My guy, the Joker has been the best player on the planet for the last 5 years and has 3 MVPs to prove it. It isn't a white thing.

Bird was amazing. He's widely considered top 10 all time. But he is firmly outside of the GOAT conversation.

MJ is my GOAT, but I'd put Bird above LeBron. Not even sure they play true basketball anymore as much as the rules have changed. Today's basketball is soft. They need to bring back contact.

I hate this. Let's say Florida and FSU are both 9-3, but FSU beats UF at the end of the year. FSU is behind Miami and Clemson in the standings while UF is 4th in the SEC. You're telling me UF gets an AQ while FSU is out? No friggin way dude.

The current model is great aside from seedings. No first round byes just for winning your conference and you would have a pretty perfect system.
FSU would get in probably due to the 3 at large spots. When you are letting 16 teams in you are letting in lot of teams. It makes no sense to let this many teams in when your current structure is a hand full ov teams with 20+ million dollar rosters. The parity will never be there to support that many playoff games.

If this defense stays healthy this year…. They could be special…

Joseph Ross Herring
West Bailey Westhersby
Eason Moi
Hobbs Schell Campbell
Spillman Carter
Boo McCoy Gibson Hood Turrentine Farooq

Dominating
I think our defense is slept on. Could easily be better overall than last years defense. The defensive line doesn't have the depth but still has extremly talented players and we should have better linebacker and defensive back play

I love to **** on LeBron, but he is legit the most talented player to ever play this game. No one else can compete with what he is able to do from a talent standpoint. Maybe Magic. But that's it.

But he is most certainly soft. He wouldn't have survived for 20 years in the league if he came up in the 80's.

Kobe is #2 for me. I know the stats don't really back that up, but he was just such a fierce competitor. And plenty of NBA stars feel that way too.

Shaq was my favorite. And honestly from a dominance standpoint, he is close to the top too. Literally no one could stop prime Shaq unless you fouled him.

I would argue that parity is better than ever. For the most part, these 20 million dollar teams seem to be losing just as many 5 stars as they bring in. When you can't hoard a 5-10 5 stars on the bench anymore, it's make it harder to sustain program success. The portal is fickle beast. And those players transfer to smaller programs where they generally ball out.

Well I now see that I have been looking at this all wrong. I just realized that pretty much everything that predates the Iphone is inferior, stupid, and racist.
Jokic, as did LBJ and MJ, a different NBA than Larry Bird played in. The rules have been changed to allow the modern style of play.

I would have agreed with you in 2022 ans 2023 but as the NIL and transfer portal continues to spiral out of control, the parity will be worst than ever. I think with a little structure the parity will get there. But I dont really need to see a 16 team playoff in college football. I think it waters down the regular season. There were a lot of important games to see who was getting those last few spots, but all those teams got killed in the first round. Its only going to be less exciting when you shift that back 4 spots.

I want to ask him old old he is. He posts like he's in his 30s.... maybe 35 or 36.... maybe younger than that.

This is fair.

Lebron isnt even in my top 5.
OH, this topic again. Lebron is my Power Forward on an all time starting 5. Larry Bird is over there at Small Forward. Magic at PG and Jordan at SG. Center? That's tough. I'll give the old timers Bill Russell. I like his intelligence.
