I understand that but Joey has a waaaaay better resume, he just got a big NIL deal and it's his last year. Despite knowing the playbook, Merk looked like the game was way too fast for him in the Spring game. Sure, Hendon didn't have the best stats but if you look at that Spring he was going against a healthy 1st and 2d team defense. Merk was going against an absolutely depleted defense of 2d and 3d stringers. Let's just discount the Spring game altogether. I'm still betting on Joey with all the other factors in play. You still putting money on Merk to win the job?He knows the system and had a respected High School career in Georgia, even had an offer from Georgia.
Never said he'd win it, i quite frankly don't care who wins it and will pull for whoever Heupel fields, I'm just saying don't discount Merklinger. Merklinger simply has familiarity working for him and isn't a a slouch like many make him out to be.I understand that but Joey has a waaaaay better resume, he just got a big NIL deal and it's his last year. This actually makes a lot of since. And allows Heupel to change it up. Win win. Many are disregarding that we will use the TE's even more with the wrinkles that have been installed. DaSaan Brame has turned everyone's head since he's been on campus and will be a weapon if he can continue to progress in the blocking scheme. We've also got a high IQ proven product in Kitsleman and then Davis, who should be very happy with the plan for the TE's using the hash and middle of the field. We won't run a many sets with 3 or 4 true WR's. We'll run 12 personnel but in many different sets and give Boo a ton of opportunities to get the ball in space from jet to screens. They have who they are confident in already on the roster. Anyone they bring in will be depth that likely won't see much PT. There hasn't been a single receiver in the portal who has presented enough value to make them want to disrupt what they see as the most talented group we've had here in Heuple's tenure.
Good points. I really hope Huepel uses Brame and Boo a lot. They could really keep defenses off guard and be a nightmareMany are disregarding that we will use the TE's even more with the wrinkles that have been installed. I don't care either. In fact, if Merk wins I will be impressed and I'll be even more excited for the team this year. Not that I'm not excited for Joey but to have him win with all these factors would mean he is HIMNever said he'd win it, i quite frankly don't care who wins it and will pull for whoever Heupel fields, I'm just saying don't discount Merklinger. Should be...but, I just can't see them paying JA over a million to come sit the bench. I think they already know they're gonna start JA. Kind of like it didn't matter what HH did in practice that first year. Milton was always going to start.
Joey is really really good. His '23 season with outstanding with talent around him and he makes quick reads and high level throws. With better talent around him, and hopefully good blocking he's going to be very goodPerhaps but I’d hope there’s a legit QB competition. A mean a million for a backup option isn’t that bad probably concerning the situation they were left in. If JA starts I don’t know if I’ll be excited or concerned. Or could mean he caught on really quick or my bigger fear is Merk just ain’t there

Yea, JH is very good at that. I think every QB he's coached has had a low INT rate. Part of it is the offense with the wide splits as wellI’ve consumed a lot of film on Joey. I mostly agree he’s underrated as 24 i saw a terrible online protecting him and some WRs dropping balls. But even in 23 head a few head scratching throws. I think consistency is key here. I’ll see him throw an absolute dime but then throw in triple coverage. I think our coach can get that consistency outta him hopefully. I do say I never really saw him miss the “layups” which Joe and Nico did several times. So if he can hit open guys he will be fine. Our offense gets guys open
