Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Help me out. The season isn’t over. What am I missing?
Adam Sparks:
UNC Asheville pitcher Clay Edmondson made a very early commitment to Tennessee baseball out of the transfer portal.

Edmondson would be in the Vols' plans for the 2026 season. As a grad transfer, he can enter the portal early and commit to UT now rather than waiting until the postseason.

However, Edmondson is draft eligible in 2025, so there's a chance he might never make it to UT. The Vols have had transfer commitments drafted in the past two seasons — Ryan Galanie in 2023 and Eric Rataczak in 2024.

I thought about the Kiffins but Lala had some "bright spots" and Monte was kinda cool. I think Lane genuinely regrets leaving UT now and I do blame him/ Mike Hamilton for the misery we went through but as a family, the Iamalevas are the worst as a group, IMO.

The X post about Edmondson is (intentionally/trollingly, naively, or lazily) misleading. Only needs a few added details:

UNC-Asheville transfer RHP Clay Edmondson has committed to Tennessee for 2026. Currently 5-1 with 65 strikeouts this season, he leads the Big South with a 2.01 ERA. As a grad transfer he entered the portal early. He's draft eligible in 2025.

Get it right, X bruh!

That’s fair but when I was at UT in the early 80’s it was not about the money. Some guys got some pocket change but it was peanuts. Most of the athletes were actually college students and actually went to classes. I had classes with many of them. For many going to a school like UT was a life long dream and getting a free education while playing for the state school was a dream. I know because I had that dream and simply wasn’t good enough to achieve it. So I worked 30 hours a week while being a full time student to get a degree. I just have a longer term perspective and think it’s heading towards a bad conclusion. It’s also going to greatly diminish opportunities for a lot of young athletes coming up. It already is with adults in their mid twenties playing college sports. I understand the cats out of the bag but the long term implications are real. A man can dream even though I know it’s wishful thinking.
As with all things the scale changes. Really it is only different in terms of scale. The rank and file were never making bank and the still aren't. Skill players have always been paid. I remember an interview with Antonio Cromartie when he was drafted. He was asked what he thought about his big signing bonus. He said that it honestly was almost a pay cut. As an aside, he couldn't read. Here is a quote from him on the current state of college football'
"Chase greatness and not bag. The Bag will follow trust me. Y’all out here chasin hellcats and leased Urus! Should be learnin how to invest and get in with boosters get equity of a start-up company. Y’all thinkin too small. How can u build generational wealth if the NFL don’t call"
