2025 Transfer Portal Thread

I’m glad the staff has confidence in the young guys. I’m not trying to discount them, but I still don’t think you can rely on Boswell, Evans, or Henderson to be a primary scoring option and be a true threat to contend in the SEC. Hope I’m proven wrong.
My assumption is Evans primarily out of that group is someone they feel good about, like 20-25mpg would be fine with them.

Today is a little boring. No current validity to any CBM talk. Obviously the stress is around missing McNeely, Rice and Miles, and still don’t have a gun at the two. We spent too much time on Rice and got swiped at the last minute. Cade Tyson isn’t out of early evaluation. I think there are both hurt feelings and questions about his durability. We aren’t chasing him with urgency currently. Chaikin is talking, but not down the road enough to predict anything. Seems like UVA is current competition. Adams is a big focus. We are chasing putting the same level of focus/momey/attention on Adams as we did Ament. Barnes has full support to pursue this with the big boys. We did a zoom with his agents. Will do another with him and family. Hopefully visit to follow. Sorry I don’t have bigger/better news. Staff believes in our young guys more than we do. No read on fifth year, but Gainey and ZZ still holding as a possibility. Gainey remains the most likely fit obviously, but I’d be less surprised than most if ZZ returns. It’d be a bit of a stretch/odd fit with JG, but not impossible.
Why would he need to visit since he’s already visited prior to his commitment to UConn. More of a face to face “iron out details” thing?

I thought it was that every player had to be on scholarship, because every player will be entitled to the revenue sharing and walk on’s won’t be, thus you can’t have walk on’s

I think it's a 105 cap and eliminates walk-ons.

I'm assuming the grandfathering folks in would only count for current on roster walk-ons though. Not a blanket thing. So if a team has 0 walk-ons going into this season and it passes they wouldn't have an "unlimited" scholarship, just the 105 cap. But a team that might be sitting at 115 with walk-ons would be allowed to carry those 10 extra walk-ons over the 105.

Adams seems like maybe the most talented option left on the board. But I worry about needing 2-3 freshman to be big pieces. You haven’t seen that result in a deep tournament run the last few years. Duke was the exception, but they also had a once a decade type freshman in Flagg.

Not the greatest news today, love that we’re going after Adam’s big and him + a Chaikin/tyson is a great close to the offseason imo. I just don’t see it with Boswell being ready he looked genuinely lost out there and I know there will be reports of improvement but he’s got too much progress to make up for to be reliable. I’m not a talent evaluator and it’s easy to sit on my couch and say that but I think objectively speaking he can’t be looked at as a 20-25 mpg guy next year if we’re trying to be serious about a final four. Maybe he and Evan’s could suffice as co-backups to an Adams but I just don’t see it as of right now.

Good to hear about Adams, I think we are in a good spot with our young guys.

That would be nice. I just think we need some experience at the 2. We may not find it. If that’s the case, I hope we land Adams and can find some Flagg/Kneuppel lightning in a bottle. Or at least 75% of that.

This shouldn’t be an issue, he’s cheaper than I expected and about 1/3 of our remaining budget, money shouldn’t be why we miss here unless it just turns into an all out bidding war, but I’m not sure I see that coming.
Has any prominent player not turned into a bidding war this cycle? I only know his UConn number, which is low against the market. Given his current suitors, I have to assume a 30-50% bump. On the positive side, we represent all the things he didn’t like about UCOnn.

I think IF you don't land an experienced portal SG or return any of our 5th year guys...good chance we see a lineup like this

PG - Ja'Kobi
SG - Adams/Evans/Bishop (whoever wins the job)
SF - Ament
PF - Carey
C - Felix

Feel like they'll take Carey's experience and interior scoring on the court to help ease pressure on the inexperienced SG to get buckets... your top 3 scorers likely become Ja'Kobi, Ament, Carey and then you just want 8 or more from the other guys on the court with them.

Assuming Estrella returns full strength, he can be an outside threat too. Last Summer he was scoring equal points from 3 (lots of baseline) as he was inside buckets.

The 30% is about what I heard for a number, assuming we heard the same UCONN number…I don’t think Michigan State or Alabama are dying to add in, both think it’s a little clunky of a fit for their current rosters and also are claiming they’re scared to compete against us in the NIL world which is a fun thing to read for a change lol, so I don’t think either pushes the $$$ up much. UNC has been mentioned and with Powell leaving them for the draft I could see them being a team that pursues hard and drives up the price. My response to someone last night was I would go $100k more than that asking price and say sign now and end things, to me that still leaves us plenty to likely find 1-2 more portal pieces to go along with him. Either you end up with a great scoring guard like Bama & Auburn had this year for a nice price, or you’ve got a really nice depth piece on your roster that if you can retain should be really nice in Year 2, again for likely cheaper than portal.

You guys did well last year when you hit the 3 at a high clip. It's most definitely why you beat us in those 2 regular season games and then looked like a completely different team in the NCAAT when we played.
When you didn't shoot really well beyond the arc, you weren't nearly as good. From the looks of your recruiting this year it appears Pope is looking to be less relieant on the 3 ball. For sure would benefit you guys to bring in a proven strength and conditioning and defensive coach. You did well last year in your 2 point percentages, but you had a lot of trouble stopping teams from driving to the basket. I'd say Pope is looking to clean that up this year, and like I said, not "live and die from 3".
Completely agree with this analysis.

I hope you’re right. My instinct says a top 30 player might get a market reset if anyone else joins in. I had not heard MSU was tentative. If true, that helps. Two bidders makes an auction.

I think they are pursuing him and want him, but I don’t think they’re “all in” if that makes sense…they’ll need him to be able to provide 15-20mpg at the 1 and they’re unsure what that looks like. On one hand that probably appeals to Adams I would guess, but on the MSU side I think they’d feel better about landing a proven 1 that could maybe play some 2.

Adams would be an incredible get, and as an unlikely one-and-done would solidify the future as well. To me, if we got Adams and are able to land a solid 2, this is a Final Four level roster. That's what made the loss on Rice really sting, because he automatically makes this a different team. If it somehow were to happen, Gainey is the perfect fit.

The guy is 25. He is not almost 30. lol

If he ends up here than Rick Barnes believes he will benefit us and that he believes he can control him. In short, if Barnes is fine with him, I would be.
That said, he's almost assuredly not playing here next year
Once you get to 2(5), you round to the nearest 10, which is 30

Trilly says Bama leads for Adams with us and MSU slightly behind.
Bama certainly may get him but prediction services did report we lead for Mckneeley and Rice until we didn't. These things are fluid and Barnes gotta just put the full court press if he wants Adams
