Recruiting Football Talk VIII

I think y’all have made my mind up. We’re probably only gonna be looking at a few select colleges anyway. I think we’re just going to focus on camps at those places to build relationships with coaches. Also, we’re not gonna be traveling that far. I want to be able to see her play and that won’t happen at a college five hours from here.
Choosing the right school is the most important choice. My daughter made the decision to transfer after her freshman season and it was a much better school for her. I miss watching her play.

I really don't know what to expect from Aguilar. He is at least quality depth. It may happen that he blossoms and eats in Heup's system. He may be a good back up in case Chase Elliot breaks his leg or he may be the diamond in the rough that we have pulled from the dirt track circuit takes the wheel of his first fast ride and never looks back.

It seems that the prevailing opinion among CFB media personalities and now NFL Draft media personalities (and scouts) is that the Briles' Baylor Veer N Shoot, and now the Heupel/Tennessee variant, do not prepare players on offense for the NFL.

This was said last year when NFL people were evaluating Wright. It's being said this year about Sampson. It had been said about our WRs and QBs in the Draft. The Nico saga for the past two weeks has brought this back out.

This isn't just a few people talking about it. This is being stated so matter-of-factly that it is a foregone conclusion. It even made it to Pardon My Take, which is the most listened to sports podcast. You can't get any more mainstream.

We (UT fans, maybe staff) can dismiss it all we want, but it's out there in a major way. Not just among our conference rivals and opponents on the recruiting trail/portal, NFL scouts are just walking around saying this to anyone that will listen.

They've installed a lot of new stuff for the offense this spring that should help address this. It'll be interesting to see how and when they decide to go from the tempo veer-n-shoot and the more prostyle formations/plays.

The Verr and Shoot has never produced an above average NFL player. The closest was RG3

Well here is the easiest positivity.

1. an overpaid diva is gone
2. you sent a message to the rest of the team
3. paying a QB with more experience that is likely going to play at or better than Nico for more than half the same money

It will be very interesting to see how hard he works to learn system. Imo jmo.

Seriously we walked down the street and talked to the guy mowing neighbors yard. Since he is already here, he works us in. Its an easy cut for a zero turn.
Really, my Nephew came by yesterday and asked if I wanted him to mow my lawn this year. I said yea, he said "we need to up his pay " I said nope, take what you got last year or leave it. Well he said I will leave it. Well 3 hours later my nephew and his mom came over and he had decided to take my offer. I said nope I will pay $15 bucks less than last year, take it or leave it. That's what that greedy kid gets for trying to rip me off.

Nico wasn't that good. People attribute success to the qb way too much sometimes. Defense and Sampson won all our games. It is possible (not saying it will happen) that we're better with someone else.

I doubt we were making the playoffs this year anyway (almost everyone on our schedule will be better than last year and we are arguably worse even with Nico), so might as well set the tone for the future by getting rid of players who don't buy in.

My mom made me mow neighbors and relatives yards for free.

Something that’s not TBD is the fact that we upgraded culture. We removed a major cancer from the roster and intern got a guy who is competitive and has something to prove.

That will have an overall positive impact to the team. It might not make for a better record this year, but I guarantee you it makes for a healthier culture two and three years down the line.
I'm hoping that he provides an injection of energy and excitement into our offense, similar to Pavia at Vandy last season. The Nico offense was really blah last season.

Here's the difference. Average QBs can be great with heart of even a slightly aged decrepit lion. Nico was made if Candy glass. Jarrett Geronimo was a warrior.

What does your team do, how do they respond down 4 with less than a minute. And you, the QB, leader of the offense choose to duck and run. You could bulldoze the defender and get extra yards. Or run toward the 1st down marker and hope to get it! Whoops! Game over.

Now, how does your team respond if you lower your shoulder and take dudes head off (metaphorically)? It says, no matter how ugly we play, you can ride on my shoulders. I think we win that game. Say what you will about Gaurantanimo but he wills us to a TD in that situation. Well he may fumble but he would risk life and limb trying.
I agree. JG gets a lot of crap from this fan base but the dude gave his all and had heart. There’s not a quarterback in the world that would have succeeded at Tennessee when he was here. I would take him 100/1 over the quitter Nico. Does anyone really think he would have lasted half a season during the time JG was here? He had limitations but he was dealt a horrible hand.

Well I'm gonna give my hopeful take on the whole Aguilar situation. We have a QB coming in with something to prove. Hopefully he has the right kind of chip on his shoulder to drive him to work harder than anybody else and elevate the entire team. We have something we haven't had in forever, the media on our side. The VOLS will be the feel good story of the year. If this guy can pull it off, and play at a decent level (talking SEC average or above level), then we will get a lot of publicity around the program. If we were to somehow make it back to the playoff this year we are for sure getting a 30 for 30

Durability was JG's best quality. I don't know how he kept coming into the game after some of the hits he took his first year. Feel like that gave him the yips for the rest of his career, but no doubt the guy gave all he had for the program.
