Recruiting Football Talk VIII

From Will West and Off The Hook Sports, Tennessee is just not on the same level with NIL cash regarding Big 10 teams. Welp, that's not good given that $$$$ now is a big factor on who wins.

From Jackcrevol on VN, Will West just isnt on same level with any Sports Media, even the National reporters he spurned bc he loves it here. Welp, that's not a good sign given $ is a factor on how, ya know. He is horrible.

MIght be horrible, but, is it a fair point? Are we now going to fall behind because we just don't have the cash? The BIG 10 has certainly been doing well (Michigan).

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but when portal opens the coaches main job is to make sure your best players are staying. For a team like us we are now looking to plug gaps not overhaul the roster, then the Second step is they contact their targets. Here is where it gets tricky. You do not sign anyone immediately that might cause your current players to leave. You want to stay quiet. Chess not checkers.
Was thinking about this, and around the possible strategy needed here.

How do you gently bring in a QB, with legitimately (assumed) generational talent on deck. To me Angeli makes a lot of sense. Bring him in for a year, maybe two.

If Merk leaves, we get it. Not ideal. But, you're gonna have to pay your lead dog in Brandon F. Chances are he comes in and competes to start from day 1.

Now, do you reallocate those $'s to being in influx of offensive talent? To me its a have too. We were slow on offense. And just not dynamic.

Michigan has a title within last 10 years, as does an OSU. Chances are we are behind them. Also, their TV viewing areas are more densely populated.

This is somewhat in contradiction to reports that we’re about to have one of the most expensive basketball rosters in the country (provided we land who we’re targeting).

It would be strange if our booster base was willing to pay for a basketball roster but not football. Now is Heup and crew going to the same lengths as Barnes to solicit the funds? That’s an open question, I think.

Self mutilation is not the answer.
Harm a whistler instead and provide a needed community service. Nothing drastic, just enough to prevent the whistling. 😡
Swollen lip might benefit the whistler. Maybe he will fall on his face literally in addition to figuratively every game. I hope he doesn't suffer a broken finger on each hand.

I find that extremely hard to believe. Ohio State and Oregon for sure are better, but they are probably 1 and 2 in the nation anyways. But from all reports, that's about it for the big spenders in the Big 10. Michigan isn't spending huge amounts. Neither is Penn State. An dyou constantly hear about other Big 10 programs not being able to compete with the Top Programs in NIL. You mean to tell me that Illinois, Iowa, and Indiana have NIL programs on par with Tennessee? GTFOH.

I agree. The article below places TN at 14th nationally in donor money. Only Oregon and OSU from the Big 10 are ahead of us.

Michigan isn't among the elites currently in NIL. Their recruiting doesn't reflect that whatsoever, either in HS or the portal. And this is despite a recent national title.

I want to thank everyone who said prayers or sent thoughts/good vibes to my Dad. His surgery this morning went well. They removed the suspected precancerous mass and some lymph nodes to check spread and we should have the pathology report by early next week. He may be going home as soon as this weekend.

We are also in a unique situation where our two (really 3 but not sure how much NIL is spent on baseball) big sports have recently played at elite levels, and we’ve spent big money on both. What other schools are in that class? Alabama, maybe Auburn without results, Michigan (but football wasn’t good), Oregon. Ohio State isn’t even good in basketball.

I hope that is right. Several of those Big 10 teams have massive alumni bases and Michigan does have some wealthy donors. Not sure about our 'wealthy donors'. Do we still have a heavy reliance on Pilot?

Michigan is absolutely spending huge amounts now

That list is also not super relevant in terms of NIL value. That's only in reference to donations to the athletic program. Virginia, for example, does not have a strong NIL collective. But they are one the most elite Public universities in the country that received a lot of university donations.

Maybe one last hurrah for Barnes. Could be one last big spend before revenue split hits. And that day will not be good for those of us who are fans of the other two of the big 3 sports anyways.

They weren't 2 years ago. I recall Harbaugh sounding off about it. It certainly isn't reflecting in the recruiting if they are spending a ton. Of course maybe they are just paying their top guys a lot to keep them from entering the portal.

I don’t discount the notion the there might just not be enough to go around. My suspicion, though, is that Heup is just much more of a football nerd and culture guy than he is a salesman and fundraiser.

My suggestion to him would be to appoint a “GM” that he trusts who could translate his vision to the boosters and handle the meat and potatoes of roster crafting.

Correct they were not. That has changed. Their NIL has seen a serious influx of cash the last 12-18 months
