'25 QB transfer prospects (Joey Aguilar)

Pavia only works in that Vandy system of drain the clock, get 3-4 yards, use every down, go as slow as possible type offense. He helped make it the best version of that by being a good scrambler and scramble drill thrower, but that style of offense has a ceiling that is hard to break through, especially against good defenses that are fast, disciplined, and maintain assignment integrity.

Pavia feasted on undisciplined defenses, but folded when the scramble drills were shut down. Also that style of offense makes it hard to come back from being behind.

He would not work in any other system. He is also an injury liability because his coach let him do whatever. You could tell he lost the jump in his step by the time he faced us.
Very accurate

He wasnt near as good in the second half of the schedule as he was the first.

None of these names excite me. Not that we are in a position to really complain because we’re desperate, but I don’t see an option out there that would keep us from missing a beat.

Josh Hoover at this point in time is much better than Nico. Would just depend on him learning the offense but he should be familiar with it through Kendall Briles

The 2023 version of Fifita was also much better

I’m not sure this is an offense you can pick up over fall camp. I expect Jake to get the nod. Won’t be surprised if Gaston is given some NIL to come back as insurance (I know that’s not exciting). Spend the money on some other guys at position of need.

Avery Johnson would be an insane pickup. Very athletic and talented runner who just needs to sharpen up some passes. Not like he’s a scrub throwing either, but I think CJH could do wonders with him.

With that said, it’s a pipe dream imo

We can yes, but a 1 year vet qb to give merk and gmac more time to develop would be preferable. Id also prefer to have a legit qb battle, not just hand the keys to a freshman or someone who steps on campus in the fall
We started a red shirt freshman last year and made the CFB playoff… would there be growing pains with starting a freshman again, yes. However there isn’t the hype that Nico had of being this all world/Super Bowl MVP-esque QB to live up to. I really hope Merk/Mac is our starter vs. Syracuse. Go get an upperclassman that can be a mentor/coach for the younger guys in a back up roll, i.e. Keller Chryst a few years ago.

Can the alleged 4 million pull either Johnson or Hoover? Johnson is currently payed less than half of that. Not sure about Hoover either but TCU has stunk since their Cinderella run a couple years ago.

This narrative is overstated. Hendon came in the offseason and played great in 21. He played second fiddle to Milton as far as being prepped to play too. It may very well be Merk but ability will trump understanding the playbook every time.
No, Hendon came immediately after the 2020 season was over, went through winter workouts and spring practice. He was in Knoxville before Heupel was. Entirely different situation than someone coming in after spring with only fall practice to learn the offense.

By that logic Gaston Moore should have been QB over Nico.
That’s not the same logic.

Merk was a 4*, top 10 rated recruit at his position who also has 18 months in the system. He’s talented AND had the knowledge advantage. He’s not a walk-on. You’re not going to bring in someone with that much more talent than Merk to overcome the knowledge of the system discrepancy. Nico was far more talented than Moore.

It’s not completely analogous because there are no completely analogous situations. My point is that a player doesn’t have to have 18 months in the system to be successful. Obviously you would have wanted the full spring and it won’t be perfect, but I didn’t see anything yesterday that changed my mind that someone with starter-ready ability would put us in a better position this year than someone with a better understanding of the playbook.
