Trade Wars and Tariffs

No one cares about immigrants but racist. Immigrants are not taking jobs. I've not yet met a newly arrived immigrant that is doing research, accounting, surgery, or any other specialized job. I have met immigrants that build houses and cut grass and perform other services/jobs that American citizens won't do. Their work keeps the country running.

I hope you're right.

But you're not.
That’s just it. Many of us calling out this stupidity for what it really is want to be wrong. This isn’t some opportunistic “get Trump” narrative by the group I’m referencing at least. Clearly we have some of that, EL LG etc…. But the rest of us just see this for the colossal self inflicted **** up that it is. 🤷‍♂️

I think it's awesome that the Chinese are making the medicines we depend on.

What can possibly go wrong?

Over half of all active pharmaceutical ingredients sold in the US are produced in the US. Heck, the US produces almost a quarter of the global market. This is another nonsense talking point trying to defend actions that cannot be truthfully defended.

What does that have to do with what I wrote?
You seem to be defending it. Trump is trying to put America first, and you trash him as being an idiot for doing something that no president in my lifetime has even tried. They ALL just passed the buck.

So our own people are trying to kill us. Even better

Well, that clears it up. You don't know. You just know that you don't like it. I suspect that you have deeper issues that you're too much of a coward to admit and confront. Nothing wrong with being mediocre, own your ****. Be the best mediocre mf that you can be.
Yeah OK . Dow 50,000 by years end. Prolly by the Bama game.

If Trump ends up forcing the EU and many other countries to drop their tariffs on US goods to zero, are you prepared to admit that, while the method of tariff calculation was ridiculous and the rollout was sloppy, the end result will be incredibly positive for the US economy? I expect this to be the end result with most countries. China will be an outlier for many valid reasons.

So you're saying we should remove all tariffs so that pharmaceuticals can be cheaply produced elsewhere.
Of course not. That is the one industry that is in severe need of regulation and oversight though.

But I just saw on tv that I need this drug for some disease that I never knew existed until then... And I'm sure Doctor should prescribe it for me. The only side effects are too numerous to type here.

We didn't issue tarrifs against Russia. Surprise, suprise.

When pressed for why, the administration says because we don’t have enough trade with them now due to sanctions. Uh huh. But we have enough with the penguins to tarrif them ?
We didn't issue tariffs on Russia, North Korea, Iran, and Cuba

What do they have in common LG?

Our tariff scheme with the EU is effectively balanced. Zero-for-zero would be great, but it's simply trading one balanced scheme for another. It also does nothing to address the trade imbalance, which Trump swears is the reason to do all of this.

But there is no logic to this. We already have zero-for-zero from Australia and a trade surplus in our favor. But we dropped a 10% tariff on the Aussies. If zero-for-zero and/or a trade surplus is the goal, how is Australia supposed to negotiate their way out of the new tariff?

So I’m not going to play this end justifies the means game. If he gets favorable trade terms great but the method will always be moronic and unnecessary. The “math” for the “ reciprocal tariffs” is going to be a lasting mark on his presidency and not in a good way. It should be made a case study in any economics curriculum on how to not evaluate actual tariffs.

TLDR version; I’ll acknowledge any positive that comes from this but no I’m likely to call this stupid methodology a stupid methodology for the rest of my life. It’s just so blatantly moronic.

The other method was working so well though.

This isn’t Boolean logic. Two wrongs don’t make a right on international trade policy.
That's an opinion I guess. I guess the difference is that I don't GAF how he levels it out. I'm tired of the USA being the sucker for everybody else. If we go down, they go with us. They know that too.

Actually it’s a fact RE Boolean Logic. Double negation just gets us back to the starting state of the variable.

Look I was done with this stupidity of a method when I went to the USTR web site and digested their published methodology. I don’t even need my BS in engineering to understand the math high school algebra was more than enough. Along with high school English. The process never addresses any actual tariff and the Trump admin is gaslighting people thinking they are too stupid to not actually understand their own published information.
