I missed that Stonehouse was gone. Our best weapon!
Eh sort of. He has a really strong leg, but he’s (especially since the injury) been lacking in other areas since the injury.
His yards per punt are absurdly good, but he has zero control when it’s come to other things like hang time or placement (it’s gotten exacerbated post-injury).
There were
other special team issues (scheming, etc) mind you, but a major issue creating so many of those big punt returns that were allowed were because he out-kicked the special teams coverage or would get minimal hang time on his punts.
As someone else put it: he’d often kick the ball too far, and the gunners would need to hit a returner already moving at 15 mph rather than one moving at 2-4 mph (from a ball in the air long enough that the gunners got to it around the same time the returner got it)…an “all-sauce, no flavor” kind of punter, not enough touch to put the ball where it needs to go.
His leg is fantastic, but it was almost
too strong for his own good, resulting in one of the worst average hang times and constantly/recurringly out-kicking his coverage team.
(Edit: In something else I read, a commenter compared him to Joe Milton - you know, on those throws where Milton just fully let it go but his really great arm strength’s just so much that it’d sail past/miss the deep, open wide receiver - …and honestly, the more and more I think about it, I can kinda see the comparison)
