Breaking: Ricky Gibson to the portal

Except, "the company" did not initiate offering more money.
Exactly. This is a shakedown, pure and simple. Gibson agreed to a certain financial arrangement, and has now chosen to take advantage of HIS team's misfortune and renege on that agreement. It's shameless greed, pure and simple! Even IF he comes back, I hope Neyland boo's the absolute **** out of him!

I’m still not sure what the problem is. If you got a raise in January and I offered you an extra 100k in March, are you some kind of monster if you accept my offer?
If you offered me another 100k for excellence and performance, sure. It's earned and deserved. But if I come to you and say that I know you lost an employee in my department and I don't think you can afford to lose me, too. Even though you're paying me top value/salary the industry pays for my job, I'm going back on our agreement from 6-8 weeks ago. I'm publicly telling everyone that I'm leaving unless I get even more money from you even though I've done nothing to prove my contributions to your company have increased or that I've acquired new skills that make me a better employee. That's a horse of a different color. Call me old school, but I believe in honoring deals, commitments, and one's word. Feels like extortion to me. I say let him walk. I'll take my chances and lumps with the guys I've got.

If a senior associate leaves the company and you get promoted, don't you expect a raise for taking over the senior role?
He's not being "promoted". He's a returning starter not a more talented player. The idea that in sports, you get to start or get more money because the guys that are better than you aren't there anymore or are out with an injury is silly. Every coach or good business man tries to improve their talent. This game rewards excellence not longevity. Gibson got already got a hefty bump to keep him from the portal not because he'd gotten way better at his position. No, instead he's sees an opportunity to take advantage of an unfortunate situation to further enrich himself so he tries to strong arm his coach and extort more money from his school. Punt him.

Yeah….nor did they initiate in my example. I’m saying another companies offers you more. Is it wrong for you to accept
You're dancing around. UT gave Gibson a hefty raise to keep him happy and out of the portal. HE agreed to the deal. Now 6-8 weeks later and right before spring ball, he goes back on his agreement and threatens his coach with the portal. If Heupel knew Gibson was headed to the portal, you can bet he'd have signed a corner or two in the last portal. No way to justify what Gibson did and the way he did it. No way at all.

So, I tell "my company" thanks for that recent raise, but I'm looking around and entertaining other offers, so, I may or may not come in Monday; let my co-workers know.

I know exactly what my company would tell me. 🤔

Using terms such as 'strong arm' and 'extort' is crazy.

You're easier to replace than an SEC CB, apparently.

If Josh Heupel negotiated a new deal, as he did, for at least double his salary and then got contacted by the pros or some college with a better offer, maybe more prestige, etc...... UT has buyout protection for both parties in his contract.

I'm unsure WHAT UT thought was going to happen when they had the State of TN sue for multiple transfers and sued for NIL regulations to be nearly non-existent.

When you sue to give the players all the cards and they play those cards, I assume UT sees this as the cost of doing business and the other side of the knife which has allowed us to become competitive so quickly after getting gutted by Pruitt.

Some of y'all saying we should let Gibson walk need to keep that same energy when Mike Matthews and Boo Carter are making plays for us this year.
It may be different behind the scenes, but at least publicly Matthews and Boo made their deals and appear to have moved on and are preparing for the upcoming season. I think if Matthews and Boo went into the portal now after renegotiating, those folks would feel the same way about them that they do about Gibson.

Take this for what it’s worth.
Consider the source I know, but Tony Basilio just said that Gibson will go through spring practice and is trying to rework his NIL deal right now.

Gibson renegotiated at the same time Matthews and Carter did. Now he’s trying to re-renegotiate. There’s a difference.
All three used leverage to get paid more. The only difference is Gibson didn't receive the leverage until a month or two after Carter and Matthews did. He would be dumb not to at least try to use the leverage that was gifted to him. Reports on matthews were that tennessee's NIL package was comparable to other offers he was receiving and he still considered leaving. Reports on Gibson are that the other offers blow tennessee's out of the water, yet people are attacking this kid for considering a transfer.

Yes they are. Because he already renegotiated. If he hadn’t signed a new deal in December and said I want to wait until spring and assess my value then….then no problem. Again, what he’s doing is within the rules and his rights but that doesn’t protect him from catching **** for it.

lol what am I dancing around exactly? If he’s likely being offered more. So he’s taking it. You’d be hard pressed to find career fields this doesn’t happen in. People start a job. People get offered more. They go elsewhere.

That’s not some terrible act like you’re making it out to be.

Seems like he told them “I’m not coming in”. Yeah, I don’t see the problem.

“Hey, I’m not happy with my salary. I’m going to look for other opportunities”.

How is this somehow immoral in your mind?

I have been at my company for going on 5 years and my supervisor has been aware that I am working towards the next level in my career progression, whether I stay or go. Because of that I have been promoted every year with a raise each time. It's business, and everyone being honest knows that.

The rest of yall sound suspiciously like a bunch of Gumps.

Do we have any idea who actually is making these big offers to Gibson? I feel like we’re all assuming it’s some big time program and that he would be leaving us for a better situation, at least that what’s all of “in the corporate world” analogies are suggesting . What if it isn’t ?

If you’re one of the better chefs at one of Bobby Flay’s restaurants you’re part of a great, stable company that gives you access to resources that a lot of places do not have and you are compensated very well. What if the CEO of Ruby Tuesday (yeah I know it started in Knoxville) said come be a part of our team, we don’t have the resources, you won’t expand your culinary knowledge, we only have a few restaurants left, but we’re willing to pay you more than Bob Flay. Do you leave? Does this change how you would view this “business decision”?
Ruby Tuesdays in this analogy is Kentucky or something comparable like Baylor or Boston College.

If the offer is better in his mind, why does it matter if it’s a major program or not?

I still don’t see the argument many are making that he is doing some kind of wrong

Misspent my college years cooking at the Rubys at the Mall of JC…..so probably not. I might be willing to put in two nights a month at the fine location in Dandridge.
