So just because you don't get angry, no one else should either? Some of us get caught up in our fervent, unhealthy fanhood and it effects our feels. This SCar loss hurt me worse than my liver transplant. I didn't start the season even thinking about the CFP, but they dangled that carrot out there and I wanted it. I wanted it bad. And then they **** the bed, and it all went down the drain. So I get that you handle your disappointment differently, and I'm cool with that, but why can't I and others be completely pissed off about the loss?

I can't speak to how much Vol football means to you or anyone else. It's kind of dumb to compare "fanhood" anyway. But I can speak to what it means to me. I live for the Fall when the Vols play football. Does that make me a sad individual? Probably. But it is what it is. And to be oh so close and have it snatched away in such a fashion; I mean a total embarrassment..... Yeah, I'm pissed right now, and probably will be a few weeks. That's how hard it hits me. And I don't like it, but I also don't know how to turn it off.

We're all different. Let people deal however they deal.

I never said that. Some of you guys reach so badly to make conclusions. I wasn’t upset? Sure, I was. Ask my family how I reacted. I’m a very competitive person.

But I have responsibilities in life, and this board actually helps me realize that they are more important than football after some of the things I read on here.

I was at the SECCG in 2001. It sucked. But that was 21 years ago now, and my life is totally different. Am I supposed to just wallow in misery because my football team lost? I have no control over what my team does, so how can I change anything? Live in the present.

Ya know, hard to fault a man for that look. Personally, was always in good to great shape. Now, in my 40's, my body hurts. I know this isnt about me, just drawing a corollary. Steve played sports his entire life (my days were done at Church Softball).

I know for a fact he is in quite a bit of pain, so says Graham.

It could also be the freakish workout regimin he keeps...honestly as long as i'm not dunlappin', good Lord willin' at 75. I'm cargo shortsin', sandling, and beering up...shirtless. Git sum!56791C80-913D-4209-8847-6CF4883DC6BB.gif

Might do a better job if he’d focus more on playing defense than talking smack. How do you do that when you’re getting your butt handed to you every single series?

I played some DB/safety. My buddies were amazed at all of my smack talk. I would only challenge the QB to throw it my way. When he didn’t, I would ask why he was scared of the slow ass white boy? 😁

Meanwhile I was encouraging the WRs that I covered with man, you are way faster than me. You were wide open…what’s wrong with your QB, he never targets you, and on and on. It was very much fun…😎

I still miss playing. From tackle to flag football as a resident and attending. I played WR, TE, DE, OLB, Safety/DB, even played center for our flag football teams. Playing center may have been the most fun. I could snap the ball anywhere into the backfield. Our first play on offense, I would snap it to our QB who was lined up as a wideout, depending on the defense, he would throw or run (basically from the sideline). Center is an eligible receiver and nobody ever covered me.

I wonder if there’s an over 50 flag football league? Now that I am almost an empty nester, I’m going to have to look into that… now fielding a team of old goats will be the main issue. 😂

TL;dr. May be worth it for some.

Some like Ainge and some don't. I have generally always liked Ainge's analysis, especially when he gets to the actual playing of the game and not all the silliness. If you have been listening earlier this week he has been direct and explanatory on what happened. DC Banks. To summarize, he did not even give his players the opportunity to fail on their own. It was scheme and play calling. Add in some missing of Jeremy Banks, the D's leader.

He said it was obvious that they needed to play press man and blitz. Soft zone and soft man were recipes for disaster because without a strong pass rush and with that much time to throw any QB would pick us apart. No holding calls from Birmingham's hit squad meant making quick defensive adjustments to the game plan. They did not make those adjustments. They kept doing the stupid, thinking it night change because Rattler has never shown he could do what he did while expecting a pass rush to develop.

Me: The scheme and play calling were game planned to play safe and it failed in spectacular fashion like most "prevent" defenses. In my book, third or fourth and Chavis will change forever to third or fourth and Banks.

No Jeremy Banks to make the pass rush happen or set the toughness tone. Having Mitchell in the game to replace him means it is 11 guys on 10, he is useless. The drop off at LB after Banks and Beasley is that bad. Herring is talented, just needs experience and yet, they kept trotting the useless out there like Mitchell and Page.

Nobody wants to hear that Heup approved that defensive game plan beforehand. All HC's have the final say on that. Banks does not have unilateral authority to do whatever he wanted. Nobody wants to hear that the defensive game plan should have been changed after the second TD in the first quarter, it was that obvious. Heup did not have it changed. I will never believe he does not know defense well as an excuse. He could never design an O like ours without also knowing defenses well. That man has football blood running through his veins.

So they lost due to fear by the coaching staff, overconfidence by some players, team morale with Jeremy Banks out, and actual play on the field by missing Jeremy Banks.

Which is why nobody was fired this week. Heup is complicit with the D's bad performance. What's done is done. They hope to recover against Vandy and in the bowl game. I believe both Banks and Martinez are on the clock, particularly Martinez. Banks just had his welcome to the SEC moment. He may be given more rope to hang himself with another year on the big contract.

JMO - the worst case scenario if they lose to Vandy: The early signing day is soon, recruits are on the line and they need continuity in the staff. I believe both Banks and Martinez are on the clock. If they are over Martinez he will be gone after December's signing day. The die is cast on high end secondary recruits for it. I doubt any high end 4 and 5 stars are going to show up to sign with us. Banks would be terminated after the bowl. The portal and late signing period might be more productive with staff changes.

If they beat Vandy and the D is OK to good, Banks is given another year and Martinez' job may still be shopped. They would wait to pull the trigger until after the bowl game. If Heup still wants Willie at that point, he stays.

If they win out and look decent to good on D, both probably return.

Maybe he should at least be drinking coors light.

It's funny. Nobody would've been mad at 9-2 preseason. And if you had been offered Bama, LSU, and UF at the cost of a loss to SC, every single one of you would have gladly taken it.

11-2 is still in the table. Grow sum.

Agreed! Also, on a more fundamental level, I've been completely entertained this season - even the USC game had me entertained until Hooker hurt his ACL (I thought a comeback was possible up to that point).

In the end, this is about entertainment. If it's any more than that, you are doing this all wrong and you'll never be happy.

Sup fellas. Yall both my homies, but i will add this:

An RF poster who is big on stats recently did a comparison between the 14 DBs currently listed on our roster and the 7 new ones committed for 2023....

IIRC, 6 out of 7 new guys coming are 4* ...some high 4*s, and the only 3* is close to being a 4* also.

Of the 14 on scholarship now, the LOWEST ranked committ out of the 7 new DBs is rated HIGHER than 11 out of 14 guys on the current roster. That is a huge talent disparity, at least according to the recruiting services. Its also telling that out of the 14 currently here, we have only seen maybe 7 of them ever touch the field during a game? That includes senior day also. Apparently no amount of coaching can make the other guys be even an SEC backup.

Its not like this staff, who eat sleep and breathe cfb, do not know that our passing defense is horrific. We got all we could thru the portal then spent almost a third (7 / 25) of our scholarships for 2023 getting about 2 normal cycles worth of quality DBs to fix the issue. Is Martinez getting the most out of our guys? Is Banks a good coach? There is absolutely no way to know for certain right now....it may be 2024 when these 7 guys are sophomores before anyone could be sure.

For now though, i will trust Coach Hype and his ability to manage his assistant coaches. He knows his job depends on them performing, and he knows 1000x as much about coaching than any poster on VN....so i will ride with CJH.

Please post more here in the RF. That’s an excellent summary. Not bashing anyone. Thanks 🙏

This DB class could be better but it is by far the best DB class that we have had in years.

That picture is worth this entire season…. It will be right up there with Leonard little pic.
On the heels of a very disappointing loss, I still find great joy in the season we’ve had thus far..still feels like a dream that we beat UF, LSU, and Bama in the same year..and not to mention being in the playoff discussion in yr 2 of Heupel’s tenure and enjoying a #1 ranking even if for a short time..🤗

Yep….. I have said many times that I didn’t enjoy the 1990’s at all bc I over reacted to each failure….. I am not allowing myself to do that…. I am enjoying the h&ll out of this season and these players.

Wasn't his loss to us one reason he left? He always made me laugh, even though he was our arch enemy much of the time..

Also, this sounds so much like what they did to us. (payback is hell)

In 2013, Spurrier and the Gamecocks finished with another extremely successful 11–2 season.[18] The season started off with a convincing 27–10 win over North Carolina,[19] although they fell to Georgia for the first time in four years, 41–30.[20] Carolina went on a four-game winning streak before falling to Tennessee in Knoxville after starting quarterback Connor Shaw left the game with a knee injury.[21] In the following game against division-leading #5 Missouri, Shaw was sidelined due to injury, and backup Dylan Thompson got the start.[22] After a weak performance from the Gamecocks in the first three quarters, Shaw was put in the game in the fourth quarter with South Carolina down 0–17. Shaw went on to lead a historic comeback in which the Gamecocks beat Missouri in double overtime, 27–24.[23] That game was the first of a six-game winning streak in which Spurrier and Carolina won the rest of their games, posting another 11–2 season.[24] In the highest-ranked meeting of rivals, the #9 Gamecocks defeated #4 Clemson for the fifth year in a row, a school record, by a score of 31–17.[25] Spurrier led the Gamecocks to a 34–22 victory over the #19 Wisconsin in the 2014 Capital One Bowl.[26][27] South Carolina finished with the highest ranking in school history in the AP poll, ranked at #4 in the country.[26]

You deal with it how you deal with it. Other people deal with it differently. That doesn't make one way right and one way wrong. Just makes them different. Don't expect others to be able to cope the same way you do. That's not human nature.

You can be mad all you want. Just don't be mad not all of us are mad.

Exactly. Be miserable if you want, but please don't expect all of us to jump into your pile of misery with you.

You know what I did on Sunday after we got smacked in the mouth? Woke up and went about my day. Felt bad and thought about what could have been and how it is sad that one dream was over. Then I remembered that we were only expected to win 7ish games all year and here we sit at 9 wins with Andy to go. I remembered that I have a daughter graduating high school in a couple weeks and another daughter turning 15. Life flies by and it sucks that the Vols lost on Saturday but I can't and won't let that rob we of the many many other joys that are offered to me in this life.
