Because as long as we have average to below average talent, we shouldn't be surprised when we lose a game to average or below average teams. You have to have talent before you can develop. Our secondary lacks talent. Otherwise you would've happily taken me up on naming them.
Im so tired of this argument. I just can’t take it anymore and I’m not trying to go off on you directly. But this is just completely false. Charles, Flowers, Tank, Hadden, and Burrell we’re all recruited heavily by a lot of schools. It’s our job to bring out their potential. We have not done that. Is it on the players for giving too much cushion? Is it on the players for not knowing their assignments for two years straight and not playing zone correctly? Is it because of the perceived lack of talent that our CB’s never turn to look for the ball? That is all on coaching. Every DB bails way too early and many times presnap showing the QB that we are in a soft zone and the wide receivers will be open every play for 5–10 yards.

I’ll never understand always blindly following coaches and blaming players until we fire everyone and then everyone say yeah we weren’t coached well. It’s blatantly obvious that Banks is a bad DC and is in over his head. It is also obvious that our DB’s are not coached well and make bad QBs look like Patrick Mahomes every week.

Nay screw that. One dude doesn’t affect a team. I’m tired of this narrative. Those DBs and Safeties as well as the DC just suck. There is no other people to blame. Fk this Jeremy Banks narrative. Stop letting these coaches get away without having to answer for their crappy defensive coaching.
OH I agree. I have been on the fire tim banks and Martinez all year. Got lots of hell. But they couldn’t be coached worse. Only unit that plays well is the DL. And if they have an off game (SC) then it’s just a blood bath.

I’m ok with bringing on new defensive staff if Heup wants to make a change…. They may be able to make a difference but that still doesn’t change the fact that those guys are not a very talented group, imo.

What we've endured over the years...give me 9-2 in Year 2 with a head scratching blowout loss on the road. Hell if Heupel can get us to 8+ every year I'll take this one bad game once a season even, I don't care honestly. Rather be in the mix and drop the ball than not be relevant at all.

Yep….. enjoy this season…. It is much harder to accomplish than I use to think it was…. As long as we beat Vandy then this season will be a huge success, imo…. Losing to Vandy would ruin it for me though.

I’m not saying they are overally talented but their coaching is terrible. SC wide receivers are average as hell and Rattler had more INTs than TDs coming into our game and we gave him 5 TDs. He had 8 all year. That is 100% coaching.

The way this played out (with us in playoff position with two games to go against probably two of the worst three teams in the conference) makes it hurt, but it really is still an awesome season. We have not beaten Florida and Alabama (let alone also won 10 games) many times during my lifetime, so if you can’t at least enjoy that for what it is, you will never find much joy in Tennessee sports, so might as well find something else to do on Saturdays.
That’s basically what I’m getting at. Humans in general are never satisfied, it’s why we have advanced to the point we have. It also leads to some pretty irrational feelings sometimes lol

You are very negative all the time. Not just on Banks. Just call it like i see it.
Lol. No, I just turn quicker than everyone on coaches when I see it’s not working. I love Heup and our offensive scheme. But he is being held back by a Boulder with Banks and our defense. When you give too much money and invest time in a program, you tend to get more mad when you see big issues. And because I have been negative since a blow out to a crap team that I am always negative? Lol ok bud

I wouldn't say ruin for me, because we ended the Bama streak...and hell most of us would have taken a 6-6 or 7-5 season if it meant we upset Bama.

We should beat Vandy, and after the way we lost to South Carolina no one on that team should be taking this game lightly. I'm sure the coaches have told them all season "if you don't show up you'll lose" and South Carolina proved it and removed any doubt that it was just "coach talk". So the team should take the week of practice seriously and take Vandy seriously. Especially those guys that want a shot at the NFL who are on defense. Cause if you can't ball out against Vandy (who actually is one of the worst offenses in the SEC) then scouts are going to question if you're worth drafting at all.

The DLine plays well against the run but we can’t seem to get any pressure or push in our pass rush. Only time we’re able to get sacks is when we bring 5 or more. Still more room to grow and get better in that unit. When we get to the point where someone on the DLine can beat their 1v1, it helps and mask’s inefficiencies in the back end. Hard to play zone or man when QB has all day to throw or can easily get out of the pocket and lose contain.

The 4 worst teams in the conference are A&M, Ark, Vandy, Mizzou. Can throw in AUB for good measure.

USCe is 3rd in the East behind Vols.

But overall I get it. Definitely one of the worst offenses in the conference. Put it together against Vols tho

I agree it was a combination…. Bad coaching…. Below average players…. No pass rush…. Penalties at bad times….a qb that made some really great thoughs( yes he had way too many easy ones as well) before Saturday…. This defense was given up a little over 21 ppg which was a great job by the defense given the t talent/defense deficiencies that we still face.

I agree Banks and Martinez need to go after the season.

They weren't highly recruited. You can keep saying that, but it doesn't make it true.

Flowers was the 930th ranked player in his class. He did have an offer from Clemson (not sure if committable), but his only other SEC offer was Kentucky.

Charles was the number 600 ranked player in his class and had a horrible offer list.

Hadden-low ranked Juco player with a poor offer list.

Burrell-527th best player in his class. He did have one of the better offer lists of this group outside of Tank, but it's hard to say how many of those were commitable.

Tank-is the only player who was heavily recruited that you named.

Players must have potential before it can be brought out. To claim these guys were heavily recruited is just absurd unless you're trying to say "Tennessee Tech, Carson Newman, and MTSU would have loved to have landed these guys". If we want to win consistently, we have to improve our talent level. Otherwise, if we continue to recruit on USC's level, we will continue to lose games to them every few years.

No one is "blindly following coaches" or even "blindly blaming players". Mine and your inability to play in the NFL is an assertion of fact, not "blame". The fact is these guys were are not very talented. We have to recruit at a higher level (fortunately we already are). As upset as you seem to be about people "blindly following coaches and blaming players", you should be equally upset with yourself for blindly blaming coaches without acknowledging the obvious talent issues

It's not obvious our DC is in over his head at all. We played great against LSU and Kentucky.

I mean the only area of the defense that didn't improve from last year to this year is pass defense and that was even before South Carolina lit them up.

2021: 29.1 points allowed, 273.2 passing yards allowed, 1.8 TDs a game, 148.5 rushing yards allowed, 1.8 TDs a game, 421.7 total yards allowed
2022: 25.6 points allowed, 303.4 passing yards allowed, 2 TDs a game, 108.5 rushing yards allowed, 1.3 TDs a game, 412 total yards allowed

That tells me RG and the LBing coaches have developed and improved their defense.

And the craziest part of this is that the defense is playing a lot less plays per game now too.
2022: 73.9 plays a game
2021: 77.7 plays a game

153 first downs on pass plays this year (through 11 games)
156 first downs on pass plays last year (13 games total)

The secondary is the only area where the defense hasn't improved and actually got worse.

For the love of....

Everyone who keeps droning on about being worried about Vandy......

giphy.gif

Sack up!!!!

We're NOT losing to Vandy!
It ain't got a dang thing to do with "Sacking up!!!"...Vandy is playing good solid ball and we just made one of the worst offenses in the SEC look like...well...our offense at its best...oh, and in case you forgot, our Heisman candidate QB is gone forever and the guy replacing him has never been very good under the pressure of being the starting QB...and has one week to practice before being thrown into a game with the added pressure to save a great season on his shoulders...so..being worried that we are going to lose to Vandy right now is a very rational thought.

Ignoring those facts is not "sacking up"...it is living in fantasy land.
