Because that was how it happened.
Like I say, this was widely known and reported by multiple sources at the time. It's not something people just made up. You can disagree as to what Fulmer's motivations were, but just accepting him at his word, he was talked into limiting his candidate field. He wasn't going to expend any political capital on the women's program by getting in a pissing match with its supporters when football was bleeding out, and he took the path of least resistance.
I've posted the full quote somewhere back in this thread. You can interpret it however you want. After all, Majors says ADs tell little whitel lies when they speak about these things, so how can we ever come to agreement about it? This narrative that Fulmer hired Harper as strictly a convenience or a lazy bowing to the blue hairs is designed to smear Harper with "evidence" that she is an illegitimate hire. And that pisses me off. It's obvious to me that he thought he hired the best coach he could get at the time for the money he had to spend, which was less than necessary to hire a Jeff Walz type of coach, and that he thought Harper was an excellent hire. After all, she was a very experienced head coach and had just had a SS run with a mid-major squad. So far, despite the poor start to this season and the problem with HS recruiting, Kellie has justified the hire by improving this team's performance year over year.
