First time I’ve ever watched these and wow seems obvious he was gonna be legit.
And just looked back at his recruitment. Guess GT got on him early. Bama, LSU, FL, etc came after him but he stayed committed. So maybe they all knew he was gonna be good then
I remember watching Gibbs' Hudl film and thinking, "this dude is a future All American RB." And I'm not a coach. I was ticked that we didn't get him because Pruitt thought he was a CB.
You are correct that those other coaches whiffed on him too, but I don't know what they were looking at. It looked pretty obvious to me.
I mean, just watch the film...
Look I don’t like Pruitt but Saban didn’t see it either. Or Kirby. Or Day. Or Dabo. Or Lincoln Riley.
Unless you think Gibbs chose GT over Bama when they were both offering a spot in the RB room.
A bunch of those guys will be back with the Covid year. I know in particular AP has said Warren, Beasley, and Wright are a few examples that could be back (however we all know Wright is going pro). That said, it won’t be as bad as that list looks. This is assuming R-Sr and Seniors all leave (which some may return with covid year)
Defense loses: Flowers, McCollugh, Burrell, Young, Beasley, Roman, Mitchell, Bumphus, Banks, Page III, Garland
Offense loses: Hooker, Tillman, Crawford, Wright, Carvin, Keyton, Fant, Warren
Special Teams: Brooks & McGrath
Next year will be a step back year, this roster may not be full of talent but the bulk of our starters will be gone on both sides of the ball and that's a lot of attrition to overcome in one season. Still think we win 8 games, but I'm definitely not going to expect us to get to the Georgia game undefeated.
You wanna see how controlling Heupel is with his schemes and how well Hooker executes, watch the short touchdown pass to Hyatt in the flat versus Bama. The scheme pulls the entire defense to the left. Hooker executes by giving just a little attention to the left before turning to throw to Hyatt. Hyatt goes mostly unnoticed by the defense and left basically 1on1 with a defender trying to catch up.
I didn't notice the little details in the scheme when it happened, but it's pure beauty to rewatch and see how our guys are executing and how good Heupel is at scheming plays.
*play is @ :35 seconds in the video:
When Heupel took over…… he said that you can’t judge his defense by yards given up bc he expected to give up a lot with our style of play…. He said that he judges his defense by negative plays caused, turnovers created, red zone defense…. Judging by that criteria, I feel that our defense has played good in every game except Florida, and Alabama. What do you think about that?I don't think we have a qualifier for an outlier. The least amount of passing yards we've given up was to Akron (241). If we averaged that (241) our passing yards allowed would rank #88 in the nation so we just don't do a good job limiting passing yards. On a brighter note we're 45th at allowing passing TDs.
In opponent's 1st downs we're ranked #11 at allowing 1st downs by the run (41 total) and #130 at allowing first downs by the pass (112).
On still a brighter note - ESPN ranks our special teams efficiency as 12th best in the nation. Kentucky's special teams rank #111 and Georgia's special teams rank #119. That gives us another edge to go along with our offense and run defense. My preference would be a rematch with LSU in Atlanta because we know we can stop their run-oriented offense plus their special teams rank #129. Ohio State, who we could see as a future playoff opponent, has a special teams ranking of #128.
In the table I posted there were other teams ranked, even undefeated, that also give up a lot of passing yards so it's not the end all and be all. In any event I think we're #3 in the Nation in the AP poll not just because we're popular. We have the qualifications relative to everyone else for the ranking.. We have to win the next two to make a claim for a higher ranking. jmo.
