How many wins did it predict for us last season?
Last year –
Last year our army was coming off of a crushing defeat. We had lost many of our leaders, the officers were in disarray and running for the hills, and the morale of the troops was at a trough. We had a slew of deserters.
We installed a new sovereign and brought in new officers. We reinforced the ranks with a few new reserves and marched out to face the worst of all battles, a desperate fight.
Last year the SEC media in the preseason recognized 3 men on our roster for their preseason All-SEC teams, Cade Mays, Alontae Taylor, and Paxton Brooks. This year they recognized 8 of our players (UGA has 9, UF has 5, LSU has 4, SC has 4, UK has 3, MO has 2, and Vandy has 0). Athlon gives recognition to 10 and the total number of players on All-SEC teams and Watch Lists is at least 12.
Last year we didn’t start the season with a proven QB. In fact for the most part we didn’t have too much proven in any of our position groups. Expectations for a victorious campaign were not very high, by any metric. The whole war was going to be a desperate fight.
We fared much better than many expected, sometimes even in defeat. Our morale improved. New leaders emerged. Our Sovereign and officers proved to be competent. We acquitted ourselves well.
As we prepare for the upcoming campaign we do so with a trusted group of seasoned veterans. We have more proven leadership and owing to calculations and “balancing” we are ready for a new fight.
This year some of our opponents are starting over with new coaches, new personnel at key positions, and a lack of proven leadership. This year for us that is an advantage. jmo.
In the early spring I posted that I had heard we were supposedly adding option elements to our offense to overcome teams that had formidable defensive fronts (balancing out opponent's advantages). In one of the spring practice reports it was reported that we were practicing those option elements but the media was not permitted to film that portion of practice.
Last year we had a number of players emerge as the season unfolded that hadn’t received preseason recognition. I think the same will probably be the case again this year. I think at least 3 or 4 of our guys not recognized so far will likely garner such recognition as the new season gets underway. I think we have a number of freshmen that are prime candidates for All-freshman teams.
One example of a freshman candidate would be Tyre West. In the spring scrimmage, according to RTI, West was dominate. He had 5 sacks in a limited number of snaps. Granted he was playing with the threes but isn’t that what you would want to see? He likely moves up to the twos and that may put him in our rotation up front this year. jmo.
Last year we were starting over. This year we have regrouped, added strength, developed some balancing to use against our better opponents, but maybe most of all, we’re not only ready for a fight, this time we believe we will win. jmo.
