The Official #1 Tennessee vs Alabama State Regional Game Thread Friday June 3rd (6PM EST SEC NETWORK)

Any thoughts on how CTV might handle his pitching? Just wondering about strategy for a regional and super regional and level of competition. Do you save Dolly or plan to pull your starters early if the Vols get an early lead?
In the post season you ride your starters until you can't. As the old saying goes the more time the pen door opens the more opportunities you have to bring a guy out that just doesn't have it thay day. TBH you're looking for 7 from your starter regardless of opponent.

Dollander will almost certainly get Game #2. Whether that’s in the winners bracket or loser’s bracket, it’s the most important game in the regional arguably, so he’ll get the ball.

The rest is kind of a mystery, but I expect Tidwell gets the mound on Friday night against Alabama State.

Could make the argument you go Beam on Friday, Dolly Saturday and then Tidwell Sunday, with Burns/Sewell available for a Game 4 if needed (or to take over if any of the first three get chased early).

If Burns isn’t needed to get out of the regional, maybe start him on Friday in the super and go Dolly Saturday, with Tidwell/Beam/Sewell all available to come out of the pen or start Game 3 if needed.

Just spitballing… I trust CTV and CFA to figure it out. The only thing I’d do for sure is start Dolly on Saturday for the next two weeks. The good news is all these arms are what sets us up so well for the postseason; the flip side (which would be the ultimate first world problem) is we could potentially play well enough that we don’t really need them (or have innings for them).

I wouldn’t be shocked if Beam goes Friday, but I don’t think you take any chances. I’m not overlooking Alabama State. This is a team that went 34-23 and played Auburn (a host) very close twice. Took them to extras once. They also played Alabama A&M (a common opponent) and whipped them up just as badly as we did.

Winning Game #1 is so important. Blade has post-season experience and knows this feeling on the mound. I just think you have to start Blade and if you jump out to a huge lead early, then you can pull him and maybe use him out of the pen on Sunday or Monday.

Alabama St will be beat by 25 runs. SWAC and MEAC schools can’t ever win postseason games in almost any sport

I coach at the high school level so take this for what it is worth. We hosted our District Tournament this year. The weather was awful the first two days, canceling all the games. We had to decide whether we were going to eliminate the #5 seed and go to a four team tournament or stay with five. The fifth team was 0-8 and had been run-ruled 7 of those. The one game they were not run-ruled was against the regular season champions. We found a way to keep them in, and they went on to upset the #3 seed in the loser’s bracket. They then almost upset the #4 seed the next night. Postseason pressure, or lack of it, creates some funny situations. Should we win? Yes. But the pressure will be on us, not them.

That’s how I try to deal with my stress.
And YES, I am stressed about this postseason!
🤷‍♂️
GBO!!
Don’t worry we are here for you buddy, we are all positive, except @W.TN.Orange Blood . He is already wondering who gets all the VOL gear after the divorce for the couple that just had the Tennessee themed wedding this week.

You know it'll happen at some point down the road. She'll get the big house & he gets the boot.

Yup. Alabama State has eleven players from Puerto Rico and one from Dominican Republic.

They play some serious baseball in those two locations. If you don't believe me, watch any MLB game tonight.

I wasn’t suggesting taking Alabama State lightly. Beam has been very good and pitched some big games this year. I trust him to beat Alabama State, and not just because Alabama State is one of the worst teams in the tourney. Beam is capable of pitching 6-7 shutout innings against most teams in the tourney, and if you can get that from him on Friday, I can’t imagine a better scenario for the rest of the weekend.

But you make a strong case also for starting Blade, and if it gets out of hand, go to the pen. You’re just going to probably end up using more of our top arms if you do that.
