On the JT Daniels news and its impact on Tennessee –
Missouri just lost their starting QB for 2022. Drink has been chasing a QB in the portal all offseason and the Tigers were hoping to land JT Daniels. Today, as reported, JT committed to the Mountaineers.
Pitt opens their season this year at home against the Mountaineers. The game on Pitt’s side will feature a former starting USC Trojan QB in Kedon Slovis going against his predecessor at USC in JT Daniels. Neal Brown hired the former USC offensive coordinator, Graham Harrell, in January. Harrell was at USC for 3 years, 2019-2021. JT was the freshman sensation at USC in 2018 then got hurt in his first outing as Harrell’s guy in 2019. In comes Slovis and JT eventually transfers to Georgia. AtlantaVol, I think thought there was at the time a good chance that we were going to get him. I think I remember him saying the guy would be a day one starter for us. Anyway, this should make for some interesting stories in the Pittsburgh media as the two teams approach the season opener at Heinz Field. jmo.
West Virginia is almost bottom of the world in returning production and Pittsburgh, minus Pickett, is the opposite. Brown’s staff reportedly told JT that he would instantly take the team from 6 wins to 10 wins and put the Mountaineers in position to compete for the Big-12 championship. I think it may be harder than that but at least Pitt isn’t going to be focused on us until they get past West Virginia. Before this announcement, using SP+, I had Pitt as an 18 point favorite over West Virginia. I’m skeptical JT can close that big of a gap all by himself but it still should be interesting. jmo.
Meanwhile, I suspect there are likely at least 3 opponents on our schedule this year that are overrated, Florida, Kentucky, and Georgia. Georgia has lost almost 30 players from last year’s team, either to the NFL (15) or the portal. Everybody thinks, well, they’re just going to reload. I don’t know. Did LSU reload after their big run in 2019? In 2019 LSU was the 5th most talented team in the country. In 2020 they were 6th. Last year they were back at 5th. Did Clemson reload after the departure of key contributions in their 2018-2020 run? I think Georgia will still be good but owing to the way analytics work they get sort of the benefit of the doubt owing to past performance. It’s true they still have a lot of talent, but they don’t have anywhere near the experience level of last year’s team. Shave a couple or three points on each side of the ball for them and our game becomes a toss-up which some of their fans have already recognized. jmo.
Florida opens with a visit from Utah. Connelly has us as the 9th best team in the nation in his preseason SP+, Utah is at #14, and Florida is at #18, making the Utah Florida game a toss-up in the swamp. We’re 26th in returning production, Utah is #55, and Florida is #59. These numbers could further change as the portal turns. In any event we won’t have to wait long to find out how long it’s going to take Napier to get Florida up and running. jmo.
Kentucky? Kentucky is always overrated. The simple reason is because Kentucky is only ever compared to Kentucky. jmo.
Are we overrated this year? I don’t want to get into that except to say hats off to our baseball team for the sweep against Ole Miss a few weeks ago. In football last year we didn’t get the job done but one thing we did do last year in football, we beat Tennessee Tech. lol
