I'm of scotch-irish redneck descent and don't think rednecks are stupid. I felt Tomas Howell's essay/book "Black Rednecks and White Liberals" was a great historical study on the subject, and well-argued. It's a great read if the subject interests you.

From my experience it's basically running a business and most people with the interesting voices don't wanna handle the tech support side of it or the hustle side of it. Because the people that really do it as a career are basically working from their own home studios. So they have to know how to sound treat their rooms or build booths. Have to understand audio interfaces and the various software for audio recording. Have to know what type of microphone works best for each application and their voice. That side of it and the hustle is why it's not something everyone is doing.

Cause an interesting voice recorded with an iPhone is no longer interesting when compared to someone that has all the proper equipment to do it right. But if you enjoy it, are well-spoken and willing to learn all the various things you need to then it's a fun career. A book that performs well or takes off (especially as an audiobook) will be a solid payday.

Since he was underage, we had to get a 16 year old to teach him a lesson.

I was 5 years old when I witnessed this. Some redneck justice was done that day. And rightly so. You also are welcome do disagree

Actually, Chris probably did the right thing in the long run. He took the "wtf just happened, ok" high road. He could have gotten really petty and everyone would have lost for the night.

When I was at ETSU people said it had the highest gay men per capita in the country. No idea if that was true...but the one time I got "hit on" it was there.

I think any small town with a University with a hefty service industry can raise its hand.

Dang that's awesome he's following English. Hopefully he gets the Graduate Waiver to go through. I'm sure UT compliance helped him there to ensure it'll work out for him though. He could be really solid at that level.

Interesting to hear your take on this. First question I ask in book club is “Did you read or listen?” Makes a big difference I think. I’ve had average books made good (to me) because of the narration - and vice versa. Used to read a lot, but because of my life/work schedule I only listen now - while driving, walking, gardening, etc. & I love having the technology that enables us to do so. I sometimes even search for books based on a few of my favorite narrators instead of authors.
