War in Ukraine

I get that they want to be in NATO, but NATO does not want them. If they did, we'd be seeing a lot of movement in that direction regardless of bylaws, etc.

You may be right. But, this attack by Putin is going to seriously affect everyone's thinking on the matter.

If Putin invades a NATO country one of two things will happen. It's on like Donkey Kong and we're all ****ed or NATO shows it's true colors as a feckless organization with the main powers being in cahoots with Putin. My guess is number 2.

I think NATO is due such overhaul as to essentially replace it, but if Russia invades an ally country, NATO will go to war.

Short-run I agree, unless they boot Russia from SWIFT. Then all hell breaks loose.

However, the damage already done to the oligarchs is real. They will now be subject to 'full blocking sanctions' meaning they are cut off from the U.S. financial system, any assets they hold in the United States are frozen, and they are barred from entering the U.S. Plus, the Russian stock market is crashing and the Ruble in freefall.

Once the winter is over, I think Germany may be willing to go the SWIFT route. But for now, they're still dependent on Russian gas. Seems like a good business opportunity for our domestic LPG industry.
I wonder if any significant elements of the Russian military are disenchanted with Putin?

Someone explain this one... EU sanctions Putin himself, yet the US has not.

WTF we waiting for, Joe... waiting for Russia to nuke Ukraine first?

This pisses me off.

EU to freeze assets on Vladimir Putin, Sergey Lavrov - Latvian official
The European Union agreed to freeze the assets of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov along with other sanctions, according to Latvia's foreign minister.

Biden announces new sanctions on Russian banks, elites but not yet on Putin himself
I posted this earlier. Did you see what assets they had available to sanction or freeze?

I am thinking Lviv and the surrounding region are going to hold out for some time. It would be curious to see if Russia would be bold enough to make bombings near the border, that is certain to escalate this conflict.

If they can keep the land supply routes open Ukraine may be able to outlast this. It will come at a huge cost but they might. You

It was an easy couple of questions. Doing something to be doing something different isn't necessarily doing anything useful.

What multi-party society is working better? The West generally is decidedly going in a Marxofascist direction. I voted for every Libertarian for years that wasn't a sanitation engineer or didn't confer with kudzu eating goats on economic matters, and realized it's an indulgence. There are some great fiscal principles in the Chicago and Austrian schools, but libertarianism as a governing model? Pffft.

I don't see anything but a leftist, socialist party getting traction. The socialist/commies have sided with Democrats for decades and that won't change.
That's what I don't get about the 2020 anti-Trump voters who aren't leftists. You had something different and the bureaucratic state decided you couldn't have it. You acquiesced and voted in the person and congress with the most animus to liberty, free markets because orange guy was such a shock to the senses. Protest voters talk out of both sides of their head; they want a champion of the people, but he can't return the nut-kicks of the people they say they don't want. The same people are taking a dump on DeSantis.

Maybe you folks need to figure out what you really want and stop voting for the polar opposite, while you backslap at the Regional Libertarian conference of 10 people about your independent minds.

tl;dr

Finland just gave Ukraine $50M in aid.

I suspect anti-Russian sentiment will groundswell now in Sweden and Finland. Putin really is an egomaniac to be threatening either country.
Really no need for it to groundswell; it's already there and has been for decades. Especially in Finland.

Should have listened to General Patton.
Not to sound anti semitic or like some weird Nazi sympathizer, but I agree we should have rearmed the Wehrmacht immediately. God knows how many lives could have been saved if communism wasn’t allowed to proliferate

He didn’t hold either of those two countries responsible for anything….. it is part of how he negotiates…. It changes based on who he is talking to or about…

As for cyber attacks…. We definitely need to do something but it starts with being the leading of that field…. Biden talked mean about Russia and we are still receiving cyber attacks from that country and from others.

Imo…. We keep using the same strategies that we have used for 100 years…. Russian values are not the same as ours…. We need to stop using the same played out sanctions that would be a deterrent to us but Russia laughs at.
Trump did publicly say China was responsible for creating the Coronavirus in a lab. That is what I meant. When it comes to China, Trump has no reservations about calling a spade, a spade.

There is something about Putin and Russia, however, which puts him on the defensive whenever he is questioned over their acts of aggression. It is strange.

Not gonna lie…I am shocked Ukraine hasn’t fallen already.

Either Putin isn’t actually trying to seize the country or Ukraine has a much better defense system than most believed.

Either way, I am honestly a bit confused right now of the slowness.
Me too. I’m also shocked that Ukraine still has electricity and internet access. I was afraid this would be a desert storm like conflict, I guess it still could be
