The only thing that is certain is it is nearly impossible to ever know how many kids we beat another school out for and vice versa.
I mean, a kid could be a diehard Vol and commit immediately. UGA could call him and up and he could tell them to not even waste his time. Or he could leave them off of his top 10 list...and UGA suddenly is "cool" on him or is no longer trying. Even if they really wanted him.
Ultimately, recruiting is juggling and maximizing your resources over not just who you want, but who also wants you, or is even available.
Nobody really know these things but the player and (maybe) the school. The "we've only beat them out for a few kids" narrative is based on the floor, not the ceiling, number of kids that have chosen us over them. There could be plenty more, but we'll never know for sure.
