I tend to think this too. I believe that whatever GOAT discussion we're having now won't matter in 10 years. Mahomes is revolutionizing the game and he's just getting started.
There are younger posters now who prolly shake their heads a little bit at old players like Montana making GOAT lists and then people explaining the game itself was different. Themselves seeing Peyton etc. as little kids and now watching this new generation of slingers like Mahomed and even Burrow over time transition into the old veterans, and offenses still changing, they will see for themselves how situational things can be. New young turks will show up, and Mahomes be the wily old vet. And then one day they will be the old guy telling the little kids about Peyton, whom none of the kids ever saw except on highlight reels.

I can remember Marino etc. and an old guy saying: but if you only saw Unitas in his own day -- the statistics don't tell the whole story. Of course I didn't disrespect that. But I really have a different feel now for what he meant. Those old QBs called the plays. It didn't come from the booth. They called the offensive.

Elway had so many seasons throwing more INT’s than TD’s, the dude barely threw more TD’s than INT’s in his entire career. Might as well call Terry Bradshaw the goat while you’re at it
Different eras……can’t compare QB’s that played before 1990 with today’s.

Looking at a bunch of old timers' stats makes one realize how much better modern QBs are...along with shifting of the game rules. But even looking at non-rules related stats, (accruacy, not throwing INTs) they've progressed so dramatically. It's not even close really. For example, Bradshaw only threw 2 more TDs than INTs in his career and had a lifetime 71 qbr, yet is revered.

Even "the greatest to never win a SB" Marino only completed 59% of his passes, 1.7 TD:Int ratio, and career 86 QBR...respectable, but far from "great" looking vs modern guys.

Meanwhile a "3rd place" modern QB like Aaron Rodgers has a nuts 5:1 TD/Int ratio and 104 career QBR. Statistically the best, in fact. Brees had a career 97 qbr and 2.3 td:int. As mentioned earlier, both far ahead of even Elway.

Mahomes is chugging along at an incredible pace too. Burrow exploded too...see where he goes. Throw in Allen, TLaw, eventually Bryce Young...Manning. It'll be interesting to see how far further the gap grows.

The advent of 7-on-7, qb camps, specific training, improved offensive schemes, along with pro-off rules have really progressed the QB role to a degree that older QBs now look mediocre in comparison. Not to take away what they did at the time, but it is what it is. They never had all the training and specialization and understanding these guys do.

Not starting a debate or whatever, I just find it very interesting is all. I've never looked at all those old stats and it's eye opening what a different world the NFL is now.
Game is catered to the offense. Didn’t used to be. Can’t lay a hand on the receiver, 5 yrd chuck rule, etc……QBs used to throw it down field 7-10 a game……and only throw maybe 20-25 times…. You’re going to have more money interceptions and incompletions.

QBs are better athletes today and the coaching is better, but you really can’t compare eras. It’s a totally different game now

If you throw it 20 times a game and have more INT’s than a guy that throws it 40-50 times a game that’s a huge problem
