Thanks for proving my point. I'm not a baseball guy, but it's the same with baseball. It's so much more than just pitching a ball to a batter and hoping someone catches it. I don't understand the whole game of baseball, but I appreciate the strategy it takes to play the game. What's to understand? It's pretty straightforward. It's the magical timekeeping, fake injuries, and lack of scoring that makes soccer unenjoyable to me.
Soccer is the same way. Where each player matters. The formations matter. It's more than just kicking the ball at the net and hope it goes in. It's literally chess on the field and if one piece screws it up, the whole battleplan is destroyed.
As for your comment, "fake injuries" (aka flopping) happens in just about every sport. However, unlike football, if it's excessive a player can--and often does--get a card (aka penalty) for it. Plus, the punishments for cards are so much more severe than football's. Sure 10 yards sucks, but imagine if we actually gave severe punishments to the players that now, instead of 10 yards, the offense or defense has to play a full man down? And regulations would make the game, especially at pro levels, so more intense! Now, instead of sucking on purpose to get good draft picks, if you suck you actually get demoted and lose $$$. I'd love to see American sports bring in regulation, at least in the NBA.
Oh and the timekeeping is pretty simple. Instead of counting down, it counts up. We play 45 minute halves, each half gets some extra time for things like cards, injuries, anything that would cause the game to slow.
Finally, the real reason soccer hasn't taken off here is because advertisers haven't figured out how to make money off the game since we can't do commercial breaks. That, more than anything, makes the game enjoyable to watch. I know if I sit down Saturday or Sunday morning for an EPL games that kicks off at 9, I'll be done watching by 11, at the latest. As opposed to football, I can start at 9 and it may be 12 or 1 before the game ends.
