Recruiting Forum Football Talk IV

It isn't a shock when players hit the portal. They've talked to the coaches and UT compliance, so they've had multiple conversations before the paperwork is initiated. Players who enter the portal either have not been able to work something out with the school or one party isn't fully invested in salvaging the relationship.

UT has seen both sides of this deal recently. So far, the players portalling are the ones UT either encouraged to go or felt could be easily replaced. Some were struggling academically or weren't doing what they were asked to do. The ones who entered the portal and returned were the ones UT wanted to keep and found ways to meet their needs and strengthen the relationship.

There will be more players leave in the spring. These are the ones who didn't get where the coaches need them to be to succeed at UT. They'll either earn their spot and be happy with the outcome or they'll look to do better elsewhere. UT will be looking to optimize the roster after spring ball. It really isn't that far away, and we'll know where the critical needs are then so the last spots can be spent to best advantage.

@VolsDoc81TX and others.. have inexplicable localized severe pain in my thigh for about 24 hours now. It is ever so slightly warm, no swelling. There was no sort of trauma or injury to the leg when it happened. My wife is convinced I have a blood clot. Should I go to the ER?
Yes! Although my pastor’s wife has been dealing with this for weeks. Tests show no blood clot, and insurance just refused a MRI.

As long as we can get Top 10 classes nationally every season I think that’ll give us enough juice to at least be a 10-3 type of program with an occasional special season every few years due to catching teams at home etc… I think we’re headed for a Top 10 class finish for 2023 and possibly outside shot at 10 wins next season although unlikely. At least we get Gators at home and catch LSU retooling coming off of a bye week. Sets up well. Just got to Plug a few holes in the roster. Hooker coming back was phenomenal basically almost guarantees us a solid season

Hubbs made strong points on his hour WNML.

*players need to get paid.
*needs to be a central figure in control not named the NCAA.
*NIL, salaries, and money to schools is disjointed. Biggest bully wins. No one likes that.

College football will lose a ton of fans and support when they hit their breaking point. It just isnt fun.
No fun at all. No need in paying attention to the roster until the first game with revolving door!

It's possible. And as much as I hate it, you guys are kidding yourselves if you think this isn't going to happen. It will happen at A&M too, and their NIL is the best in the country.

It's always going to happen because everyone wants more money. You just wait until your school has an elite QB who knows he could get 5 mil to transfer. He'll threaten it, force his current school to pay, or he will transfer. That's college football now. And that's the way its going to be if there are no rules.

So even if Banks jumps in the portal today to test the waters, that doesn't necessarily mean anything about our current NIL program.

It means that UT has a path to a solution... and has used it successfully in similar situations.

Every day I learn more about what we're not supposed to discuss. First, no discussing recruiting struggles. Now, no discussing rumors of players leaving.

So how about that Michael Jordan. He's the GOAT.
When the potential of Tyler hitting the portal, the board reacted the same way...baseless rumors, he posting TN stuff on his page, etc...guess what...Tyler was in the portal weeks later

I saw an interview with one of the Spyre guys and the one thing he said that stuck out to me was, and I'm paraphrasing: Tennessee doesn't have 25 donors willing to donate $1 Million to the NIL program for Tennessee, which is why they are working to recruit the regular working guy/gal, like myself, to join their group and donate to the NIL for Tennessee. That tells me the Big $$$ donors are not going to fund NIL, that according to Spyre, and maybe it's just their marketing strategy to get things going, they want to engage as many UT fans as possible to join in on the NIL and raise money in an almost grassroots kind of way. I know for a fact the Spyre gentlemen made the statement about the 25 donors not being willing to donate $1 Million for NIL, because that was surprising to me. I know I'm stating the obvious, but in this new world of college athletics with NIL, transfer portal, etc. I would think think the Big $$$ schools like Texas, A&M, etc. have a huge advantage, if it's just really about paying players, in any and all sports, not just football. Also, the NIL, and we all know this, won't just been a one year deal, it will be an ongoing yearly situation, that will require donations to that program and an annual commitment on the part of donors who choose to donate to the Vols NIL program. I don't post a lot on here but just thought I would share what I had heard directly from the Spyre individual.

So have you heard that Banks is considering jumping in the portal over NIL? And by heard, I mean other than the VN rumor.

Multiple players have used this strategy. More will. Some we hear about; some we don't. Some put the word out to work the process. Some are just testing the waters to see what they can get.

It's a predictable outcome of an unregulated process. It'll sort itself out. UT isn't losing players the coaches are fully invested in keeping.

I actually enjoyed the past (pre-internet) when I bought the Tennessee Volunteers Football Guide to read about all the incoming Freshmen. Didn’t know or care about any of the pre-signing day drama. Those were the days. By kickoff, I had memorized every player’s height, weight, hometown, etc. That was in med school, residency, and until kids…😊

I used to read the recruit threads but it became dramaville so I stopped. The RF is my safe place. Of course, I have a very strong ignore list, so that definitely helps…
I memorized all of that, too!!! Loved every player because they were ours. Then kids...
