It was always a money based arms race…. How do you think we were so good during the 90’s….. it sounds like we are getting our ducks in a row right now….. elite players are going to get paid…. We have to offer more than just money as well.If the elite players are just going to go where they can make the most..then that skews the argument. I agree that it will work like that for mid-low tier players, but then what will happen going forward is if you develop a guy into a great player, then they will just transfer later on and be plucked up by schools with money guys that will pay them the biggest bucks.
They have created a money based arms race.
White has said it isnt the mega money we need, it's us. Average Joe's pitching in.

Hey kid want to come play for Oklahoma or should I just haunt your dreams for the rest of your days? Your choice.

I think anyone being fair gives a pass for 22. It’s an OK class but there are plenty of acceptable reasons why that’s the caseOur fans are just being ridiculous…. This class looks like every first year class that we have ever had…. We were an extremely poorly run program that is facing sanctions….. it will build and grow year by year if fans will just be patient with it…. I do like that our staff is trusting their own evaluations and have decided not to recruit some higher rated guys bc they didn’t think they would be good here at Tennessee… the worse mistake some of our previous coaches have made is taking higher rated guys just bc of their rating that never/barely saw the field here…. If our coaches are good evaluators/developers then we will continue to grow to where we are fighting Bama and Georgia consistently for recruits.
One of VolNation’s favorite past times is spending other people’s money for them….pay a buyout, build a facility, buy recruits, make NIL deals happen.OPM - spend it for them, right VN? You know better to do with their money than they do. lol.
Relax and watch it done the Danny White/Josh Heupel way, which is similar to what has been happening in Cincinnati - just offensive innovation versus defensive. It did give us a 7-5 with two potential other wins the officials shafted us on after a fired coaching staff, loss of over 30 transfers and sanctions looming. Good evals of who you can get, strong development, staff continuity, build the roster depth, highly disciplined/focused play, punch people in the mouth on the field.
When Santa delivers the right presents down the road, the program may elevate to elite. But let's take the program to consistently good first. Let's win an SEC East before declaring we should be buying all the 5*'s with OPM. I have a feeling that is what they are thinking as well.
case in point. Give Tiyon a hondo to stay at TN, locked in. He bounces. Not smart money.I honestly thought NIL would be about the strength of a fanbase buying merch, and was comfortable that TN would be ok. Never envisioned that it would be about ultra-rich people buying players without salary caps. The NFL places "reasonable" limits on pay, and corporate sponsorships are generally limited by the business value of the sponsorship. NIL, so far, doesn't appear to have either a salary cap or meaningful business value (in some cases). Can't believe it will stay this way long term.
I swear, this is the last ill say...
Saban not only called Pruitt to come and coach for him once, but twice...the second time to be his DC. Mark Richt made that call, and Jimbo Fisher made that call, as well. Whether it was with good players, bad players, built or not built, those three men thought enough of Jeremy Pruitt to hire him to lead their defenses. Between those three men, they have (I believe) 12 National Championships, 16 Conference Championships, and 556 wins. So, whenever anyone is arguing with me about whether or not Jeremy Pruitt is a good DC or not, they're really arguing AGAINST all that.
I would ABSOLUTELY LOVE to see the look on Nick Saban's face if @InVOLuntary or anyone else could argue this point with him. "Nick, you sure you want to make that hire? If you look at the talent levels, and what the D was the year before, I believe you'll see what I see from the sofa."
Give me a break, man.
How this argument is taken seriously is beyond me. "He can't win because he can't coach, with all those 5 stars." "The reason he wins is because of all those 5 stars, not that hard to coach 5 stars." Which is it?? Penny Hardaway is sh!tting 5 stars, how's that looking? Since John Calipari got to Memphis and beyond, he's signed as many 5 stars as anyone...how many National Titles he have to show for those 20 years? Oklahoma has signed as many 5 stars as anyone, how many National Championships they won? I could go on...
Pruitt's time here was a disaster, his defenses horrible. Sorry, though, those 3 years don't make me blind to all the other years he was an IMMENSE SUCCESS.
Anywhere in the top 20 does it as long as we have good evaluators/developers…… people want to skip steps and become Georgia and Alabama over night…. We need to become a solid football team with good depth that is consistently at/near the top of the second tier of teams in the SEC…. Then we will be ready to move up to being like Alabama and Georgia’s of the world…. It’s a process.I think anyone being fair gives a pass for 22. It’s an OK class but there are plenty of acceptable reasons why that’s the case
But we’ve gotta do better in 23 for sure. Fringe top 20 classes won’t cut it.
This is so shortsighted and over simplified...this is about fairness. If you literally legalize a few megateams that have hundreds of millionaire fanatics willing/able to buy up all the elite talent, then CFB becomes nothing more than a bunch of Harlem Globetrotters-Washington Generals exhibition games.
I assume you are a Vol fan...it is fairly evident that we don't have the guys willing, or maybe since Pruitts shenanigans "able" is the better word for it...so are you ok with being consigned to being TV exhibition game "cannon fodder" for the schools that are buying up all the elite talent?
I agree with you. However, a common counter-argument that people will use is that Saban was able to sign the #1 class his first year at Alabama. It is unfortunate, but we have to realize that won't be happening here for awhile.Anywhere in the top 20 does it as long as we have good evaluators/developers…… people want to skip steps and become Georgia and Alabama over night…. We need to become a solid football team with good depth that is consistently at/near the top of the second tier of teams in the SEC….
