Have you played the Witcher? Because the show is horrible in comparison and that's with giving Cavill credit for being a great Geralt (far better than I expected). I compared notes with another guy who'd read the books but hadn't played all 3 games just to see if I was missing something and nope. I wasn't missing anything. It's that off. The few things I did understand came from the first 2 games, some from the short stories, but mostly it's made up trash. But the thing is they had to make the game 3 times to get it right and Wild Hunt really is a culmination of the first two attempts.
The guy who wrote the Witcher is an asshat who thinks he's famous because of his short stories rather than because of the game which he sold the rights to for the price of a used car. He was famous in Poland and there'd been European interpretations of his short stories and novellas but his novels hadn't even been translated into English when Wild Hunt came out. His anti-game attitude carried over to the tv show where they intentionally changed things the game had gotten right. Poles who consider the Witcher and CDPRojekt Red (the game house - name references the bootleg games they copied/pirated during Soviet bans on everything) to be a point of national pride but they will be the first to tell you not to listen to a thing Sapkowski says.
The reason CDPR made the Witcher to begin with and really they're more a collection of disjointed short stories that CDPR managed to cobble a real story out of in Wild Hunt is because Sapkowski's work was kind of a universal touchstone for Poles growing up when the Soviets were still in charge. His work was one of the few things the Soviets didn't censor, likely because it was fantasy.
The games are 100 percent improvements. I'm still watching the show but it's with the hope that it gets better. And I can already see from previews that they're making things more like the game. TWO SWORDS DAMMIT. NOT ONE ON THE HORSE!
