I've been extremely pleased with Banks all year. There is no other way to describe last Saturday's defensive performance than pathetic. Surely I don't need to go drag out statistics. The question is where do we place blame? You, McGill and others seem to think it was mostly on the players. While I do believe the players have some of the blame, I think Banks had a poor showing. Does that mean I want him fired (that's usually the response from some when you are slightly critical of a coach)? Hell no.
All I know is when we set back and played zone and rushed 3-4, we consistently gave up huge chunk plays. Time and time again allowed big play after big play. When we rushed 5 or more we time and time again (I realize that was very few), good things happened most of the time.
No, no...not at all do I think you want him fired...it's your critique, and we're entitled; and, I agree, wasn't very good the other night on D. Zone has to be better, standard pass rush HAS TO be better; but, sometimes, zone is executed, QB and WR just find the windows, it happens.
However, where we disagree is the "some" blame placed on players, with Banks "poor showing". While yes, there's been times I've wondered why we're not doing this or that as it concerns Banks play calling, most of the time, and this has been all year, the D calls are putting our players in position to make plays, they just aren't doing it. Missed tackles, not getting off blocks, dropped INTs or breakdowns in coverage (I bet we've dropped 7 or 8 INTs on the year, or we're a split second too late)...that's execution, and that's on the players.
Seven to eight times out of ten, I believe the calls have been up to snuff, and the execution wasn't there, and thats how I feel about the other night...that's why I'm not getting too down about the D; once we get some better personnel and depth, I'm super excited about what Banks brings to the table.
But, yes...the other night was not good, except when it ABSOLUTELY had to be.
