i'm nervous, but not because of the football team we're playing. i believe we can play with this team. it's because of the situation. this is a huge opportunity for TN. and i'd really like to see us take advantage of it, and not pucker up and squander it like we've done more times than i can remember.
Same.

for me, i think it's got to do with the fact that we've seen OM do what they're doing for a full season, plus. we've seen 2 games of it for TN.

so who should you have more confidence in? the one that's been doing it longer or the new guy? so i get that, and don't disagree with it.

but on football alone, we're capable of matching points with Ole Miss, and if we continue the relatively mistake free play we've shown the past two weeks, Ole Miss's defense isn't going to stop us a ton. i expect we'll run a lot, and wear out that defensive front, and take our shots as they come available. so if you don't have drive killing penalties or turn it over....it could be a basketball game.

defenisvely , well, this is a way more difficult match up than we've faced all year. Pitt's offense is obviously very good. but they don't play the tempo and they're not as apt to getting the gigantic plays from their offense that OM can/will. it's going to be interesting to see how Banks calls this game.

in the end, i think this game winds up high scoring, but not the 80+ points....mid 60's-70, and i think this game comes down to something in special teams...missed fg's, return game...something.

I saw this game compared to 2015 Oklahoma and I really agree. It's not quite as monumental but a win here would be incredibly huge and cement UT back on the map. I think you said it well. I'm nervous for the same reason. I know no one wants to make it about Kiffin either but I think most are lying if they say they wouldn't feel a huge sense of satisfaction watching Lane hang his head walking off the field. I can picture it in my mind and it's beautiful.

Ole Miss defensive stats are horrid.

We may score 100.

BVS posters - just enjoy the sunshine a bit more. It’s OK to have hope again. Heup has given you enough for you to find your way out of the gloom.

Be a realist and look at the stats and match ups. Our D has shown the ability to make the opponents one dimensional and we have some good players back from injuries. They go against an uptempo O scheme as good or better than OM’s in practice. OM has showed everything they have in the last two games, which zapped their stamina. Think Mizzou when it comes to their D. Heup will take what they give in the pass and run games and we have really good playmakers. Playing at home with a capacity crowd that will impact their snap and line calls.

It’s time to win and tell the CFB world to quit discounting our guys.

In Freak’s contest all we have to do is pick the winner of the game. We don’t have to be concerned about the score or the spread. I was spending a lot of time studying up on each game and wasn’t having the sort of luck I was looking for so I decided to take a more simplified approach. There’s a lot of factors that go into the outcome of a game and since the games Freak selects for the contest are mostly just 50/50 games (in everybody’s book) there’s no way I don’t think to get a consistent edge.

The model I chose to use requires a lot less time and I had previously discovered that factoring in strength of schedule the net difference between a team’s offensive scoring and defensive scoring aligned pretty well with a team’s record at the end of the year. The bigger the net the better the record in most cases. So I decided to go with that and then I didn’t have to worry about being right or wrong. I could give the credit and blame to my model.

I still do a lot of research on every game because, well, that’s what I do. I’m retired. For example one metric I like is net yards per play and Brian Fremeau provides that data by filtering out FCS games and garbage time plays. We are generating (offense – defense) 1.33 net yards per play and Ole Miss is generating 1.31 yards per play. Football Outsiders says after week 6 we have the 7th best offensive line in the country; Ole Miss has the 14th best. They say our DL ranks 47th overall and Ole Miss ranks 111. We have the best QB passer rating in the conference with Hendo Heisman and Ole Miss is close on his heels. Our pass defense is rated at 121.25 and Ole Miss is at 140.31. We’ve played 2 strong passing teams and they’ve played one, yet our pass defense is performing better.

Someone asked a day or 2 ago if this was Banks first job as a standalone DC. It’s not. I wrote an article on this back on April 5th. He was the DC at CMU, Cincinnati, and Illinois before he went to Penn State. His bio on UTsports and his wiki page has a lot of additional information. He was the DC when Butch brought the Bearcats to Neyland in 2011 to face Bray, Hunter, and Rogers. His title at the time was co-DC but he said in answer to a reporter’s question that he was the play caller. In any event, he has a lot of experience for his current role.

Lastly, since I’m sharing information. Last week I pointed out that the purported strength of the vaunted South Carolina defense was its pass defense, which at the time was ranked 12th best in the nation. Its run defense was ranked 68th best. That’s based on yards per game for both which doesn’t always tell the whole story. We ran for 247 yards on them so now their run defense in down to 81st best in the country. Their pass defense is still 12th best but Hendo’s passer rating for the game was 199.13. If we hadn’t taken a break for much of the second half we could have probably continued to score at will. jmo.

Ole Miss has a run defense ranked #108 based on rushing yards surrendered per game, 86th based on yards surrendered per attempt. We are at #30 in yards given up per game and #27 in yards given up per attempt. South Carolina had faced Kentucky and Georgia before us so they had a lot of faith in their defense. That bubble went burst in the first quarter. You hate to see it. I think on paper it's fair to conclude we should be better able to slow their run game than they against us. jmo.

Massey says his power ratings are the most significant output of his celebrated model (originated in 1995) and he has us as 15th best team in the country and Ole Miss as 18th best. We’re at home and I think we come into the game with a number of advantages as identified above. The only question I have is whether or not we’ll again score 28 points in the first quarter. I wouldn’t bet against it. jmo.
Love this stuff man. VN POTY every year in my book! The real MVP

So USCe fans were upset with the loss until Beamer’s post game comments. Now, at least on Reddit, they believe they won the 2nd half and would have won the game if it weren’t for the endzone interception. They are downvoting anyone who disagrees.
We would do the same thing. You don’t want to believe your new coach is bad and have hope for the future. I don’t see the chickens being a game for us for a while now.

honestly, Kiffin has nothing to do with it for me. it was 12 years ago. he got left on a tarmac after being fired by USCw. i got my chuckle from that, and moved on. to me, this has everything to do with Tennessee taking another step in separating itself from the stigma we've created for ourselves the past 15 years.

this game alone won't do that, but it sure would be a pretty big step in the right direction.....a whole lot bigger than walking way from a another well played game with a bunch of "well, if this, if that, we could have won" crap.

go win the damn game this time.

I thought the Missouri game could be a blowout if the defense played well. I think the SC game could be a blowout if the offense plays smart (limit penalties and turnovers). SC's offense is terrible and their defense is ok mainly because they're pretty opportunistic with getting turnovers. It's a game that shouldn't be close if Tennessee plays hard and plays smart.
Going to share my thoughts on the Ole Miss game. Simply put, continue to protect the ball and limit mistakes on offense and the odds of winning are high. Ole Miss obviously has a great offense with a very dynamic All-American QB. However, I think Tennessee's defense is more capable of getting stops against Ole Miss' offense than Ole Miss' defense is capable of getting stops on Tennessee's offense. There's not a huge gap there, but having a better defense (although not elite) is an advantage. Corral has avoided turnovers this season, but last season showed that he's willing to take risks if he's under pressure (both physically and mentally). Can he play smart in a hostile environment if he's in a position where they HAVE to score? Hopefully Tennessee plays well enough to find out, but it's a potential factor.

Defense advantage goes to Tennessee. Offense feels like a push right now despite Corral being a great QB. I think if Hooker just plays ok then there are others on the offense around him that can pick up the slack. If Corral just plays ok, then Ole Miss' offense suffers a lot. On the other hand, if he's playing up to his potential...then you're not stopping that offense. I like the advantage on defense and the home crowd to make a difference.

Me either… I feel like you lose out on what you payed for which is 4 quarters. Now I have left with about 2-3 minutes left at times just to get a head start when the game was out of reach otherwise try to stay. I know alot of people that leave at half etc. Why even get tickets if you’re going to do that? Lol
Embarrassed to say........but my dad left before the Larry Mize chip-in at Augusta in 1987, the 6 OT game vs Arkansas, and the "Music City Miracle"
